I've never Mod'd before

Right so, painful as it is to admit, I've never, ever mod'd in my life. I've always found the idea so tedious and - in a lot of cases - the games so cluttered that I cba to figure the whole thing out. However, Torchlight has peaked my interest and I think on release I'll finally be ready to jump into the mod community. I realise it'll take a long time to perfect but... you know... I'm a PhP programmer of sorts, so it shouldn't be that hard :-P

My main question is, how friendly will the toolset for Torchlight be where new mod'ers are concerned? Will there be basic tutorials to introduce us to the various things we can do with the set... or will we have to learn it all ourselves? As a sort-of-programmer myself, I don't imagine I'll have a big issue in learning it myself, although I do strongly feel that a lengthy tutorial that sets us noobs up would go a long way to pulling those people who are put off by intimidating toolsets out of the wood work and generally make the moding community much stronger and far more diverse.

    I think most of the modding will be done through the editor
    http://www.runicgamesfansite.com/rgffor ... f=27&t=419

    the actual game gui is dome with CEGUI, which is xml
    I don't think they've said if they'll provide a custom editor for that or not

    Ogre particles (smoke, flame, glows) are written in a simple script
    but I don't know if they'll provide an editor for it
    this is part of the VC++ sdk for Ogre and was downloaded from
    https://sourceforge.net/projects/ogre/f ... e/download
    // Example particle systems

    // smoke
    particle_system Examples/Smoke
    {
        	material        	Examples/Smoke
        	particle_width  	55
        	particle_height 	55
        	cull_each       	true
        	quota           	500
        	billboard_type  	point
    		sorted				true

        	// Area emitter
        	emitter Point
        	{
    		angle               		11
            	emission_rate       		15
            	time_to_live        		4
            	direction           		0 1 0
            	velocity_min        		150
            	velocity_max        		240
    	}

    	affector ColourImage
    	{
    		image		smokecolors.png
    	}

       	affector Rotator
       	{
            	rotation_range_start  		0
            	rotation_range_end   	 	360
            	rotation_speed_range_start  	-60
            	rotation_speed_range_end    	200
       	}

       	affector Scaler
       	{
           	rate 	100
       	}

    }

    I'm sure a lot of the users will provide tutorials for the 3d modeling stuff

    and the devs said there will be a few tutorials

    I don't know if their is a better one out their (or if you seen this one), but here is a video demo that includes some things about the editor, it seems pretty easy to get the hang of! I am sure some things will be tougher than others, but for the most part, pretty simple!

    I also plan of making a mod for Torchlight, it looks like a lot of fun!

    ah good
    I posted a link above that contains a screenshot of the editor from this video, but I couldn't find the link for the video itself

    Volbard making a map at 40x speed. Looks easy to use with a little getting use to.

    kewl sounds simple enough, maan I've always wanted to program a game, but it takes much learning, anyone have good sources? i learned some of XNA but Im stuck in limbo cause I am switching computers and Win 7 and stuff.

    depends if you want to learn on a mac or pc. But if you don't know C (or some version) start with HTML, then java. plenty of books out there. As for modding a game, changing script is a lot easier.

    Or you can take the "fiddle with things at random until something breaks" path of learning that I use :P

    forget html
    its practically useless
    learn Objective-C
    if you want to program for the iPhone, it is the only thing you should be learning
    http://www.daleisphere.com/iphone-app-d ... -to-start/
    since you already have a mac it should be easy to get started with Apple's version of Objective C, called Cocoa, and learn general programming. After that you can then learn the iPhone specific features of Cocoa.
    buy this book
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/032150 ... 0321503619

    if you want to learn to program things other than the iPhone then learn one of these other languages
    learn C or C++, C# or Java

  • It looks like we have a little less than two months before the release of the game via download. With that if you would like to learn to program/script using C++ or C# I can recommend the following free video tutorials.

    For C++
    This guy on youtube can get you up to speed fairly quickly,
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyVhn0FWWB4

    Also the C++ videos from the website http://www.3dbuzz.com are a very good start as well. However if you do start the tutorials over C++ from 3dbuzz I would recommend first visiting this thread http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=122895#post994129 The Reason for this is 3Dbuzz used an old compiler so a small bit of the code in the videos are outdated for most of today's compilers. Viewing that thread will give you the updated code for each of the lessons, also that thread has some great information over C++ in general.

    C#
    With C# Programing I would recommend http://www.3dbuzz.com once again. They have an XNA Section and while most of it is for paid member sponsors the first of their series is completely free and is an awesome introduction to C# and XNA.

    I hope the information I provided will help in your programming needs.
  • C++ is about the best thing you can know, but go ahead and finish learning HTML. It's handy, and takes 1/1000th the time of learning the other stuff. |^p

    Yeah, i'd like to have a basic understanding of HTML before i do anything else.

    they're including the actual editor they used to develop the game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu1KMHtAJsY
    the files you see him adding were created with the editor itself, with 3ds Max, with PhotoShop, CEGUI and plain ordinary text files

  • I hope its not too difficult to get down with all the tools and everything, I've never really been into modding but this game has definitely sparked my interests. I have a basic background in HTML, Turing, VB and a bit of Java but i'm sure that won't matter too much. I look forward to getting my hands on this.
