My all-defense Destroyer, part way through Hard difficulty, in **** mode. ;) Soaking up/blocking attacks from 7 lvl18 Goblins at once! ;)

Anyone tried a build like this?

Update: No longer in **** mode. I'm playing softcore now, since I died at lvl 21 (was reallly sleepy and I just got slack around two trolls). I resurrected my character...was going to do so anyway since I have to play at a netcafe and would lose my data if I didn't. So, carrying on...I'm level 24 now and have a block chance of 49%. Defense 147, 315-630 Absorb...and I'm doing 85-442 Magical Damage with Armor of Thorns at skill level 3. It's a lot of fun going up against a Construct and watching the bullets glance off or get blocked. ;)

Quick screenshot that includes that information:

So far it's actually performing...pretty good! I haven't really played TL any other way (been toying with this build since I started,) so I'm not sure how much damage most people take at my level, but for the most part I do seem to be able to soak up a lot of hits from groups of enemies that seem like they'd ordinary not be something you want to stand next to. Most of my trouble of course comes from critical hits - but then I guess that affects everyone.

The armor of thorns really helped to upgrade my damage output. I've got max Defensive Spell Mastery as well, so when I'm taking on lesser monsters I activate Retribution and use Slash to take them all down and when I'm fighting stronger ones I also activate Draining Touch and go hit by hit to get back some health. I was taking too long to take on monsters before, but now it's really balanced out. Can't wait to keep on leveling up my skills and get some better equip, get some stat upgrades from items/gems so I can equip some decent Strength based weapons and see how much I can soak up/deal in the end game. It's a lot of fun being so tough. :)

Aww, man. My screenshot isn't working. I'll upload another one next time I get a chance.

Very interesting, actually. Although I'm curious why you'd sacrifice so much strength just to be a tank. Tanks are quite useful don't get me wrong, although as you already know in torchlight you'd need certain stats for certain weapons and that in turn will increase your DPS which will make it a lot faster to kill stuff and no need to tank everything and pot like mad. I must say though, your build seems pretty awesome, makes me marvel at how the game mechanics really work as far as distribution of stats and skill builds.

Awesome build man... Weird... But awesome.. :)

    Thanks bro! :)

I guess I just like finding different ways to play RPGs and I like focusing on non-traditional tactics if I can get the chance. I play a lot of roguelikes and I often go for strange builds and strategies - one of them is defensive focus which isn't what people normally go for and I like the fact that since it's not something that's seen as standard, you often find interesting exceptions in the game which perhaps won't be anticipated by everybody (including the developers). I guess in approaching this build in Torchlight, I wanted to see how the game would respond to having unusually high defense early in the game as opposed to the other traditional stats that would be most expected. Mostly I just really enjoy the visual cues of "glancing blow" and "blocked!" that pop up often. I like being able to take a lot of damage too, haha. It allows me to also wade deep into battle - and explore the avenue of expanding the strategy to the thorns aura, etc. Obviously strength is the trade-off - and some weapons - but that also gives me creative room to come up with other ways to play.

To sum up, I really like exploring what might happen if you just focused all your energy into something completely non-traditional. Sometimes it can have some pretty fun results. :)

I completely agree with your theory and approach as far as gameplay mechanics and experimentation.

I just have two questions for you.

Are there any other build ideas for torchlight/arpg games you delve into?
And also, can you upload more video's of them? :P

    thanks in advance.

Yeah it pretty much just comes down to finding a way that I think is fun to play the game. I tend to like focused themes in my characters. Each character is personal so it's nice to take a very personal strategy.

I haven't got any other projects going on at the moment, no. I'll let you know if I think of something.

And I will try to upload another video some time soon. I'm at lvl 24 50% block now so it will probably look pretty cool if I take some bullets from some Constructs, or something. ;)

Good stuff bro, it's always good to find something fresh for yourself and think out-of-box. Something that many people especially don't bother with when gaming.

Looking forward to seeing 50% block rate!

Awesome! hah, i see your shadow armor is quite effective too, also i noticed your DPS has gone up as well. Very nice balance bro. I'm actually going to retire a character soon and adjust my stats/skills for the descendent to some of what your doing. Looks like fun. :D
