XKilla's Ravage Build [Elite Viable](Videos)10/25 Patch 1.15

edited May 2015 in Berserker Discussions
So, after being active on these forums since the game's release and partaking in many topics being discussed here, I finally decided to make a video showing off the Ravage build that I use. I very rarely ever see another Berserker using Ravage at all, and when I do they are using it along with Battle Standard at every opportunity when the skill is off cooldown.

Please check the UPDATE LOG for details on what has changed in this post ;)

L120 Elite "Duncraig" 6-Floor map solo video

L41-42 Before and After Ravage Gameplay (Dramatixin)

-> Few notes about the original video/build:
- 2nd run of the day. I recorded the 1st run as well, but played really sloppy and died too many times to deaths I should have otherwise avoided.
- Video shows me dieing once to a pretty fail ranged/trap death. Not a fault of the build haha.
- Build does NOT require this level of gear, however this is NG+++ Elite L105 map running, so keep that in mind.
- Build requires some form of mana on hit or mana steal(*preferable*) in order to really shine.
- Battle Standard bug can be used, but you will have significant downtime waiting for it to come off cooldown and you WILL be doing less DPS. (Patched out as of Patch 1.12 ... Does NOT affect this build in any way whatsoever. If you were abusing this before you were doing this WRONG!)
- Innate/Socketed/Enchanted +Ice Damage and/or +%Chance to Freeze is crucial to this build and staying alive in Elite. It synergizes with the 1 point (can increase) of Shatter Storm passive to give you AoE lockdown on groups of mobs.

-> Few notes about the L120 Elite "Duncraig" video:
- The video took me a few tries recording and encoding to get the huge 110GB of raw footage to play nicely. This is why the load screens were left in and not cut-out as in previous videos. Sorry for any "inconvenience" in having to watch these precious few seconds :D
- For those curious what this "Duncraig" dungeon is, it is a user-made "mod" (more of a hack job since we don't have official Modding Tools yet) that turns the **** Boneyard L105 map sold at the Mapworks Map NPC into the L120 Duncraig dungeon instead.
- The Duncraig dungeon is 6 floors deep with a traditional boss on the 6th floor.
- Multiple Enchanters can and DO spawn on the same floor. I have seen that troll enchanter "Master Enchanter" twice on the same floor before!
- Roughly 15 Champion mobs per level. The dungeon itself always comes with bonuses to Magic Find (MF) and Gold Find (GF).
- DO NOT ATTEMPT this dungeon mod without using Ice Shield Rank 10/15. As you will see in the video, almost everything casts some kind of projectile.
- If playing multiplayer, your teammates CAN JOIN YOU in this dungeon. However, at floor 3 they will be placed in the traditional 3rd floor boss room and you will be in a different part of the dungeon seperate from those who do not have this mod.
- If playing multiplayer, your teammates WILL NOT SEE any and all enchanters on all floors. I have no idea why since the enchanters aren't changed in any way, but there you have it.
- Link to L120 Duncraig Dungeon Map mod: http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=42001
- Remember: Always backup your ENTIRE saved games directory before attempting to use any mod, no matter what the mod does!

-> Few notes about the L41-42 Before and After Ravage Gameplay video:
- This was a spur of the moment decision to begin recording which is why it was "cut in" from seemingly nowhere.
- Yeah I was listening to music at the time :D
- Mostly the reason for this was to just give those interested a look at how I'm doing with my Ravager remake, Dramatixin, using relatively **** gear.

GEAR - GEMS - ENCHANTS

I will continue to update this section with further details of what I'm currently wearing as well as general gear you will want to keep an eye out for. In the meantime, you can see exactly what I'm wearing if you visit the link to the recent video I made using a 2H weapon. The only difference between the original DW video and the 2H video is the weaponry used in each.

Armor:
Until I hit level 100 and acquired my 7 piece [LINK DELETED] set for all of its huge bonuses...
- 6% mana steal? check
- 22% all damage increase? check
- 33% cast speed? check

Gems:
When it comes to what to use for gems in your weapons, I'll defer to myself...
xkilla wrote:
If you're an auto-attack only DW Zerker:
- At least one "Conveys **** Damage over 3/5/8 Seconds" gem/enchanter on EACH weapon (executes will apply both at once)
- At least one +Ice Damage on BOTH weapons via Innate/Gem/Enchant (1 point in Shatter Storm is "mandatory" for every build)

If you're a Ravage/Eviscerate DW Zerker:
- Same as above, except the above applies strictly to the MAIN HAND weapon only.
- For your Off-Hand weapon: It is a "stat stick" which means use +Crit%, +Crit Dmg%, +Attribute Enchantments
- Off-Hand on-hit effects/gems do not apply while using any and all skills. Anything here will only apply when you run out of mana and auto-attack/Execute
________________________________________________________________________________

COMMENTARY ON THE BUILD

Here I show off a run on NG+++ Elite L105 map using Ravage. I only have 2% mana steal from the Aristocrat set along with the same set's 6% cast speed. Cast speed is a huge deal for this build, much more so than attack speed.

My build doesn't require any particular kind of weapon in order to work. Of note though is the fact that any and all "on hit" effects only work/apply while Ravaging if they are on your Main Hand weapon, not Off-Hand.

2H weapons work just fine with Ravage since cast speed is what matters. The only possible issue with a 2H is when you burn your mana pool and need to mana steal via auto attack, it could be a bit slower than dual-wielding or sword and board in that respect, depending on how fast the 2H is.

Claws work just fine and in some ways might actually be better here. Claws have their innate armor bypassing ability and sheer speed which will allow you to more quickly shred into a champion/boss before building up Ravage + Shred Armor. The lack of splash damage doesn't work against you here because Ravage is a 360degree AoE attack in a 6 meter radius. That said, lack of splash damage can be a hindrance during mana stealing as you will only be hitting one mob instead of a group of mobs.

At the end of the original video, I show off a quick single target comparison against the target dummy. If you pay attention as I hover over the debuffs on the dummy, you'll notice the DoT from my main hand weapon never reaches the same heights with the Battle Standard bug as it does when I'm just going about my normal LMB clicking of Ravage and mana stealing to full mana.

WE CAN REBUILD HIM. MAKE HIM FASTER... STRONGER!
In this section I am going to be continually providing updates on my progress with the remake of my Ravage build using my new-found "optimized" [LINK DELETED] to compliment my pre-existing gear that I currently use on my current Level 100 NG+++ Elite Berserker, Dramatix. The goal here is to provide everyone, most notably newcomers to this build, one particular way to flesh out and play this build. I will only be equipping my old Ravage Zerker's equipment at Level 100.

This "guide" (it's not a guide) is meant only to show everyone my personal choices for my remake of my Ravager. I already have my end-game gear laid out, enchanted, and socketed. This is why there is no Dex/Vit investment!

The rules for my remake are simple:
Not using pre-stashed gear
Not transferring money
Playing "legit" from the ground-up on Elite in solo play without the use of respecs in mind
Legit: Not accepting monetary donations from others and soloing so as to avoid +Gold Find mods granting me 1mil+ gold per pile, etc.

    1st XD

    very nice build
    and nice game play
i was wondering how effective is Ravage on bosses , i can see it can hold its own np
    good job
  • How did you get negative elemental armor? They are all showing as like -4000.

Good eye. I really have no idea how it happens, but it's been happening to me for a week straight now. If I sit in town long enough it will slowly tick back to where it should be.

If you watch later in the video where I'm transferring items to my pet to sell and I have the inventory open, you will see what my actual resists are.

Why shred armor if you don't melee often? I'm gonna make a guess and say that it stacks on top of each ravage "slash" ???

I see many zerker builds using it that aren't melee based, so I am quite confused...

Stormclaw 1 point? Is it just a dps boost on its own?

Also, what was your main dps before hitting ravage lvl 1?
  • xkillaxkilla Posts: 618
I think you already answered your own question there. 1 point in Storm Claw was what was used prior to hitting level 42 and getting Ravage.

Shred Armor works on skills. It works extremely well on Ravage since Ravage hits 3x a skill use. If you combine this fact with high cast speed... well, you get the idea.

looks fun, do you still find executioner useful since you rarely auto-attack?
  • Hello, new to the game but I was curious about executioner. Does it work with a 2H? Just the comment says it is only effective with 2 weapons of the same type. Could someone please clarify.

2 weapons of same type only.

I assumed it had to do with getting mana back easily. Also, probably was just handy pre- level 42.
  • xkillaxkilla Posts: 618
Executioner is a pretty important part of the build for me. If you watched the video, you'll notice just how fast I gain charge and how I'm essentially always in Frenzy. And I'm not sure what you mean by rarely auto-attacking as that is how I regain mana.

Also, since I now have 100% execute, I can take advantage of any on-hit and/or damage over 3/5/8 seconds effects on the Off-Hand, since I will be hitting with both weapons at once instead of just my Main Hand -> Full Mana -> Ravage. You will notice this happening in the video at the end when I do the training dummy tests. I only have 995 Electric Damage over 5 seconds as an enchant on my Off-Hand and it is stacking up to 5200 dmg/sec.

Executioner is only valid/viable if you dual wield two melee weapons or two ranged weapons together. Sword and board and 2H don't execute and you can therefore take those 15 points and put them elsewhere. If I had to put them somewhere else in such a case, I would probably put a few more into Shatter Storm and probably enough in Rage Retaliation to nullify the cooldown there. Honestly, the points could be put wherever you wanted then.

  • In the beginning you say that on-hit effects trigger, however you run out of mana all the time, even with on-hit mana trigger, untill you basic-hit once to get the lifesteal, how does that work? Is it because the effect actually has to be on the weapon itself to work?
  • Shek333Shek333 Posts: 120
I love the way you do damage with this build. Hadn't tried ravage, looks sick.

I could have been more clear on that I suppose. It is widely known that no life/mana on-hit/steal effects work on actual skills, save for Frost Breath once you reach Tier 3 (Rank 15/15). What I meant by on-hit effects there in this context is the chance to freeze, stun, slow, dmg over 3/5/8 gems/enchants, chance to burn/poison, etc. Those kinds of things work with Ravage if they are on your Main Hand weapon. If they are on your Off-Hand they will not work while you are Ravaging, but will work once you auto-attack/execute.

  • Random offtopic question: do other form of on hit effects work on frost breath?

And the main confusion came from the wording "on hit", since that is exactly what it says in the lifesteal and mana drain efects, others are worded differently :P
  • xkillaxkilla Posts: 618
Honestly, I have never used Frost Breath, nor Glacial Shatter, Permafrost, Storm Hatchet, etc on actual mobs, and not with any kind of on-hit effects to play around with.

That said, I don't see why they wouldn't follow suit with Ravage: simply have the effects on your Main-Hand weapon and you should be good to go.

    XKilla,

I just got the connection between your name and the picture of Rarouni Kenshin.
    Badass.
    SteamID: LeifKT
  • There's at least some form of difference in my mind, in ravage you actually hit them (technically at least), where as in frost breath you just... breath at them. And embermage spells that function off weapon damage, that i think are close to frost breath mechanic wise, they do not seem to work. (Could be wrong, but what little testing i did, would suggest so).

Should test all these things ,but too lazy :P

    XKilla,

I just got the connection between your name and the picture of Rarouni Kenshin.
    Badass.

I smell logic errors here. During the time he is known as Rurouni Kenshin, he does not kill. During his killing times, he was known as hitokiri battousai :P

I'm going to see if I can get some on-hit effects for my old level 49 zerker and use him as a test dummy.

    Shek, thanks :)

And there is no logic errors at all. The picture is of Kenshin and is I believe from the anime/manga period which he was a wandering samurai (Rurouni). He is therefore an ex-killer. ;)

XKilla could you please explain why you raised Focus so much? Strictly for execute chance?

Also, what is the point of maxed Cold steel mastery? I guess it's only for the 30% increase in physical damage, as I don't see you using any cold skills.

    Thanks.

Cold Steel Mastery affects any and all Ice Damage... Get Ice Damage on your weapon(s) and bam, HUGE increase in dps! Same thing with Focus. Focus also added a lot of mana for me to work with and yeah sort of execute as well, but not so much.

  • Nice build there, but there is one thing i do not understand. You just gain fury so fast even without triggering execution passive which increase the charge rate. So where do you get the charge rate increase from to be able to recharge so fast?
  • xkillaxkilla Posts: 618
I gain charge that fast through criting everything around me with Ravage and splash damage weaponry. Also, I have 100% execute chance so when I run out of mana, I insta-execute everything in front of me, regain full mana, and then Ravage everything with the buff up. Further, if there are ranged/spellcasters around and I have Ice Shield up, then I gain charge yet even faster still.

I still don't see where the ice damage is coming from unless you get very lucky with your weapon. Could you please post your weapons?

On the other hand I was thinking where to put the points if I chose to ignore cold steel mastery and the truth is I don't have any better ideas, even if I would use only the physical damage buff part of the skill. So yeah.

I really hope this works, as I like the feel of Ravage better than Raze. But the build seems quite item dependent and I will go completely untwinked.
  • xkillaxkilla Posts: 618
The build is only item dependent in that you need cold damage on your main hand weapon in order to proc Shatter Storm. That is also where Cold Steal Mastery is coming into play.

  • Hi dramatrix!

I can confirm that the build is really solid... I had the luck to play with him.
Actually our builds complimented each other pretty good... Funny as i was also playing berserker.

PS: you are still lucky to have that mimic perma fish!! :)

    Hey Mendolin!

Been a while since we grouped. In fact, I think it's been ever since I made the jump from NG+ to NG+++ (I somehow missed NG++ by being level 100 I guess haha). I've actually been working on making a new berserker, using your build :)
