Darker Sharper Filter Version 1.0

Before
tl2a.png
After
tl2b.png

Instructions:
1. Extract/copy all the files in this zip/folder into the root directory of your Torchlight 2 install.
2. Run the game, uncheck anti-aliasiing box in the option/settings window.
3. Use the Pause key (beside Scroll Lock) to turn the effects On/Off.

How to uninstall:
- Remove all files with the prefix "darkD3" and the file "d3d9.dll" in your Torchlight install folder,

How it works:

This is a Direct3D DLL override hook that adds custom post processing shader filtering effects onto almost any game.
The filtering values were tweaked to fit different Torchlight color schemes.
It changes the saturation, color tones, gamma, exposure, sepia tone, and sharpening of the game.

What the file "d3d9.dll" does:
When Windows loads a program's requested libraries (dll files) it first looks in the EXE file's start up directory, and then the system folders.
The real d3d9.dll is stored in "C:\Windows\System32", so by taking advantage of how Windows loads dlls
we can place a different d3d9.dll in the game's root directory, that loads custom DirectX rendering code and then references the real d3d9.dll.
The game will see this as a normal Direct3D loading procedure and should not raise any red flags
as it does not modify the game's code, read or write its memory (this is how many cheats and hacks work), and does not modify the game's files in any way.

Once the customized DLL is loaded it reads the "darkerD3.fx" shader file and applies the effects based on values in the file "darkerD3_Settings.h".

Known issues:
- Starting the game with FRAPs (or similar overlays) with the filter on NVIDIA-based cards might not enable the effects.
- The sharpening effect might cause an FPS slow down on certain hardware.
Make sure you have the latest DirectX installed and have updated your video card drivers.

Editing the filter values your self:

If you have some programming syntax knowledge feel free to open the darkD3_Settings.h file in Notepad and edit the values for the effects.
You can change the file while the game is running and the filter will still apply the changes.

  • Wouldn't screen shots of TL2 comparisons be better?
    | How to extract/edit TL2 item files, V012 [With images] I am no longer active in the modding community. If you wish to take a project that I have made, besides the 'How to extract/edit TL2 item files', and change it as your own, you may do so.

Yeah, I updated the first post with TL2 screens comparison.
Let me know how it goes over on your end.

  • Steam won't let me rename the Torchlight2 executable.

This is really nice. I was already playing Diablo's music.

What we do is if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do? ELEVEN. One louder.

wut, no TL2 music? thats terms for a inquisition! .. heh.. this is one of the few games I have actually kept my music on in, its usually the absolute first thing I turn off in any game!

Altering the Torchlight2.exe file at all stops the game from launching.

Got it to work. Restarted the game with AA off, didn't have to change the name of Torchlight2.exe. It looks very nice. Gives the game a more realistic feel.
The only problems I have is my eyes have to adjust to the difference, and some of the colors are bland in comparison to vanilla.

awesome mod! and the function to turn it on and off with the pause key is great!
only thing is that i got it to work great on my windows xp, but when i try to run it on windows 7 it crashes.
could that be because windows 7 use directx 11? anyways, love the mod! great job!
we all have the right to act like idiots from time to time, but others just abuse that privilege.

You may already be aware that Matt Uelmen did this game as well as Diablo's soundtrack. I agree that Torchlight II has a great soundtrack - especially the character creation theme! But, man, Diablo's soundtrack is simply a masterpiece in my opinion. It doesn't get any better than Diablo II's "Wilderness" track.

About this mod: I can no longer bear to play without it. It's that good. Only one problem so far: in the battle against The Grand Regent I suffered a fair amount of frame rate loss. I didn't think toggle the mod off at the time.
  • ok i got this mod to work, by changing comparability to windows xp, for some reason the game will crash when trying to load it under windows 7 (i use home edition)
if you can find a fix for this it would be great and I LOVE THIS MOD! thank you so much.
  • one thing you need to do if you can is lower the sharpness more, it makes it look grainy and the gear looks really grainy other then that its great

    Finally...
I have been waiting for this since the release. I'll fiddle around with the values a bit, 1but finally having the option is great.

  • A bit too grainy imo, but very nice nonetheless. The file is easy to edit for anyone who doesn't quite know what they're doing.

  • Really like this filter! Tried the ENB settings and didn't care to much for it. But this, I enjoy this! Thanks for the upload/share :D

looks cool but it makes my game run slow... my pc runs torchlight just ok, this mod raise the graphic requirement a bit and makes it run slow for me.

Is there a solution for this?

Diablo 3 was like christmas morning; but when I rushed downstairs and ripped open my presents there wasn't presents inside, it wasn't even coal; it was a huge pile of ****.
  • Is there any way to get this working with AA? I love the filter, but absolutely cant play without AA, everything looks like ****.

Edit: Nevermind, it wasnt working the first time but for some reason after i reloaded it it works fine.
  • Because color is overrated.
Time = Reward is a cake pill that you dump some water on and ****, there's a cake.
Risk = Reward is a cake, that reflects the quality of ingredients and preparation you put into it.

This mod adds a sharpness to everything as well, it doesn't just take away color.

I highly recommend to try other settings form the filter's original site: http://darkd3.com/. I now use the balanced version, and it looks really cool. ;) Some pics (looks better in-game). Oh, and I enabled bloom and post sharpen in darkD3_Settings.h (removed // before #define USE_BLOOM and #define USE_POST_SHARPEN). I recommend that, too.

    Quick Question...

Q: Is there a way for me to use this shader without having to turn off Anti-Aliasing?

I find that when I turn that off the edges are very jagged looking.

Cheers, and thanks for the Shader.

Well, I don't know about ATI, but if you have Nvidia graphics card, you can enable antialiasing in the NVIDIA Control Panel even if it's disabled in the game settings.
