save and restore char under steam

Hello,

I am new to torchlight. I preorderd torchlight 2 and until is out i am playing the first one which steam provided. I am trying to backup my save game and then restore it and seems like i am not able to do that. I am using steam and my steps are the following:

1) backup %APPDATA%\Roaming\runic games\torchlight to a different folder
2) do some changhes in game and exit
3) restore the copy from step 1

My char is not restoring. What i am doing wrong?
