An Update from Travis Baldree

travisbaldree wrote:I'm curious as to what you think an appropriate period of time would be? If the game includes 3x the content of Torchlight 1 ( At least - we run through about the same number of assets about 2/3rds of the way through the first act ), character customization, 4 new classes, many more items, many more monsters, many more skills, multiplayer, and new features like time of day, outdoor regions, as well as cinematics, and an orchestral score - how much longer should it, theoretically, take over the development of the first game? Factor in the fact that we'll be the first to admit that the first wasn't as well balanced and 'complete' as it should have been - and considering our team size is not significantly larger.

Scheduling is really, really hard - especially when you're effectively predicting a timeline to solve problems you don't know the solutions to yet. I have honest interest in how much time you think is required, and why. The previous game took 11 months to create, and we nearly killed ourselves doing it. Given the scope change from the first to the second, what would you consider a reasonable schedule? ( Ideally one in which you can sleep, have a vacation every once in a while, and spend time doing enjoyable stuff with your family )

I'll be straight with you. I care WAY more about the quality of the game, and what people think of it, than about how many copies it sells. I have never been motivated by money, and am never likely to be. My standards for success are to make something we are proud of, and to sell sufficient copies to survive and do something else that we want to do and that people hopefully want to play. That's pretty much it.

That is one of the greatest things I have ever read.

Ok, so I've been lurking for a while to keep up to date on Torchlight 2 and decided now was a good time to step out of the shadows and join the conversation.

Torchlight 1 is my first RPG game. Got it based on a review by a local radio station I listen to. I've really enjoyed playing it. Makes the match 3 and hidden object games I was playing seem very boring. Single player only, though. I'm not good enough to join a muliplayer world. I'd be toast in the first 5 seconds, probably, if I even lasted that long. LOL.

Yeah, I'm bummed at the delay but I'm glad Runic cares enough about us to give us the best possible game without all the issues I've experience with a couple of the other single player RPGs I now have that really should have stayed on the drawing board just a bit longer. I'll be waiting line to get it once they say it's done.

Meanwhile, playing as the alchemist and those darn imps have run off again, the dog is barking at me from the balcony where he's apparently stuck and I'm up to my eyeballs in zombies and spiders. Just another day in Torchlight. Seeya!

So I was getting nervous about the lack of updated and my premonitions where right. Sadly you are incorrect, I'm not playing anything at the moment

BF3 and MW3 - I'm not into shooting games sadly...
Skyrim - Not my usual game
The rest - I don't have a console

So I've been waiting till November and it will push on till next year.

"Yes guys I'm just expecting 2 games this year Diablo 3 and Torchlight in which I was deeply disappointed with the former choice so I only have 1 game left to wait for...and then it also got pushed to 2012 :(

Yes it does pain me to read this update I was actually prepared for the November release *sighs* Good luck Runic Team. Go get it polished

I'm still waiting.

Stop making Torchlight 2 a Diablo 3 wannabe, stop asking why it's not competitive. Shut up and enjoy the damn game.

I was actually hoping to hear this news tbh. I don't want a rushed game that feels unfinished. People need to relax. If this game is epic, no one will even remember this delay. Hell I have waited ALOT longer for games that sucked. This game will not suck and getting it less than 2 years is still amazing, I mean truly amazing. Keep up the work Runic and do what you guys do best, make awesome games.

I can't wait to hear what the new stuff is

Thanks for the update. I'm an adult, so I fully understand delays in life. With the upcoming holiday season I'll be busy with my girls anyway. I do hope you guys take some time to spend with friends and family this holiday season. Those of us who genuinely love the game will be waiting patiently for what we all think will be a great time. I would be playing the hell out of Torchlight if it was multiplayer. The fact that TL2 is being boxed with multiplayer is hook line and sinker for me. If you can also package private hosted servers I would be in heaven.

Drink some 'nog. Sing some songs. Go outside and yell at some fleabaggers! Make sure whatever you do you do with greatness in mind!

Another one. Why are you still on the boards if you hate everything so much?

You're a horrible human being, please have the decency to be miserable without trying to drag others with you. Or die, that would be pretty sweet too.

Can it perma, no one wants to hear your whining. Also, weren't you banned?

It's done when it's done and when it's done in 2012 it's going to be awesome.

Hush it and wait.

There is no evil here, ya loony.

I'm not a Runic fan.

Anyway, that has nothing to do with your responsibility to die to make this a better world or at least not have kids so you can't corrupt them and force us to deal with those douchebags later on as well.

Now: Torchlight is delayed again. Some people bashed the decision in the announcement thread and Runic President wrote an emotional post which he explained he's not motivated by money.

After all of these did you really think everyone would buy this marketing crap? Your lies has no effect on the intelligent people. You make me hate the game industry even more. Yes, I'm Permaximum. You should think for once why a regular fan since 2008 until late 2010 has such ideas about Runic now.

Fear the evil in guise of good.

So, I probably shouldn't respond to this, but frankly, I don't have an enormous amount of patience for being called 'evil'.

How, exactly, have I lied to you?

And why does the release or delay of a digital product that costs all of twenty dollars incense you to the point where you throw around words like hate and evil?

I use my real name to say the things I have to say, and stand behind them as being truthful to the best of my knowledge.

I'm not a marketer. I'm an engineer and a developer, and that's what I do.

I must say, the most impressive part of Permaximum/Destiny/OldFriend's post is that he fixed his spelling and grammar enough to fool us this long. I figured it was him the first time though, since any time slander on Volbard comes up it's always Perm. He's like the troll who wouldn't stay down.

It is this kind of integrity that makes good games. This is why I follow the Torchlight forums and not the Diablo forums.

I couldn't care less about Diablo franchise anymore. The Blizzards and the Biowares I grew up on in the 90's are not the same companies they were back then.
You guys are the heart and soul of the industry and will have my full support no matter what.
Just make sure you pass this onto the next generation of developers, else we end up with a gaming industry that regurgitates crappy remakes like hollywood does movies.

I'm eagerly awaiting TL2 and the MMO but I'm old enough to find something else to do while I wait.

Well. Of course I must say that I am somewhat dissapointed that I wont get my hands on TL2 this year. But I have a few more things to say. First, to all the fans that have posted positive posts, I commend all of you. For the rest of you, I certanly hope that none of you are older than 12. All you have to do is read the comments from Travis (Awe inspiring by the way) and the rest of the gang to realize how committed they are not only to the game itself, but to the community that plays it. In the face of negitivity, they respond with dignaty and aplomb. And guess what? No name calling/bashing. So your playtime got pushed back. Well, life happens. I am looking forward to the great product that I know will be released when ready. These people are working their tales off for our future enjoyment. Is calling them names, or telling them that they will fail bring the game out any sooner?
All I am saying is give out the same respect that is clearly given to you.
This a great community, of both fans and devs. I respect them more for the fact that they actually watch the forums and participate themselves, instead of letting this place run itself. That is part of the respect given. Grow up.
Thanks.

I really feel like correcting that history lesson Destiny gave:

Year 2008:
Mythos Hiatus begins, COMMUNITY BREAKS UP.
RGF/Insider forms after Runic Games Domain goes up with notice of all 17 members staying together in newly formed team founded by Max, Travis, and Peter.
Community begins to REFORM thanks to RGF/Insider being a place to communicate with Runic.
Plan is laid out: Single Player to set foundation and get name out, followed by MMO 18-24 months later.

Year 2009:
June, Official Forums open
Oct, TL Released after 11 months of development

Somewhere in between Oct2009-July2010:
TL2 begins development because of high demand for an OnRPG version or patch.

May 2010:
PWE invests 8+million in Runic, actually giving Runic more freedom in doing so.
MMO on backburner, and company that first showed interest in Runic making an MMO is 100% ok with it.

Somewhere between July2010-Jan2011:
XBLA ver. requires more work than expected. Runic EXPLAINS that TL2 was delayed because of having to divert resources to console port. Never denied it.

Mar 2011:
Microsoft Published TLXBLA released

Now:
TL2 delayed with open and honest responses from developers

Fred Fuchs(Film Producer), pronounce his last name in whatever ways you can think of. I guess that's what he's referring to :/
It's pronounced Fox, but people say "F***s"
