[CLASS] "Valkyrie II" Mod

Postby Phanjam » Tue Jun 29, 2010 6:23 pm

Places a class named "Valkyrie" into Torchlight. The Valkyrie is a female melee fighter class based on the animations and skill sets of the standard Destroyer class. So she plays much the same way with a few minor differences (see the version notes in the later posts)

Pls download this mod from its RGF file page.

Re: New Class "Valkyrie II" > Version 0.1 Info (June 2010)

Postby Phanjam » Tue Jun 29, 2010 6:36 pm

Stability
As of this version 0.1, your game may crash to the desktop when you first run it with this mod installed. But I've found running it again right after the crash WITHOUT clearing the mod cache, allows it to run smoothly from then on (at least until the next time you clear your mod cache 0_o).

History
This 0.1 version of this mod was assembled by me, Phanjam. I say "assembled" because I really didn't author anything in this mod. This mod is a mash-up of a few other mods as follows:

1) "Yet Another Gender Mod" (YAGM) by Chazyl.
(viewtopic.php?f=20&t=10919)

At its most basic, this mod IS the YAGM mod, but retaining only the Destroyer's female counterpart which Chazyl already called the Valkyrie. Chazyl's mod is great because it matched the new characters' animations with the skills of their counterpart, something earlier gender mods didn't do right away.

By extension I should credit the mod that Chazyl says inspired him to make his YAGM mod, which is the GenderModv1 by sigreth (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=6173). The female Destroyer there was also called the Valkyrie.

2) "Paladin Class" mod by CCCenturion.
(viewtopic.php?f=20&t=8905)

CCCenturion's Paladin Class mod is a very polished new-class mod. It was a really valuable resource in helping me figure out how things need to be structured for a new class. I would have liked to go as far as his excellent mod does with all-new skills for his class, but I'm currently at my limit just doing this female copy of a Destroyer!

From the Paladin mod I got the idea to decrease the sizes of swords and other melee equipment for better proportion with the Valkyrie's small frame. And I figured out how to do it with the help of several nice forum members who patiently answered my questions.

The Paladin Class mod also started out named as the Valkyrie and I think some people still refer to it as a Valkyrie mod. Which is why I called this mod Valkyrie II.

3) "Revealing Armors v1.1" mod by 7eg.
(viewtopic.php?f=20&t=4953)

These armors plus Chazyl's declaration that the YAGM mod was designed to make it easier to wardrobe each class differently, are really what got me started on this mash-up. I tried dropping 7eg's armors into the appropriate wardrobe folder and it worked! And I just kept on mashing stuff together from there :)

v1.1 is the tamer version of these armors, but if you don't like revealing armor in general, you can always just drop the .png's from your favorite vanquisher armor mod into the wardrobe folder (and if you want even MORE revealing armor, 7eg's mod has got those too! ;)

4) "Faster Walking" mod by Didero
(viewtopic.php?f=20&t=6070)

From Didero's mod I learned how to adjust the character's running speed, which I incorporated into the character's .dat file. I did this for balancing reasons because the valkyrie's .dat file is basically the same as the destroyer's. But I felt a female fighter wouldn't be as powerful as her male counterpart, so I weakened her strength and defense stats, but also made her faster to compensate.

Some other info about the mod
The Valkyrie icon on the character creation screens is artwork from a comic cover ("j).

Things I may do for this mod (eventually)
Make a dedicated character intro sequence for the Valkyrie. I have the artwork already - just can't seem to get it to work :(

Re: New Class "Valkyrie II" > A Community Mod

Postby Phanjam » Tue Jun 29, 2010 8:30 pm

In the same spirit with which I borrowed ideas and code from around the community to stitch this mod together, I release this mod back into the community for anyone to do more of the same. Hopefully the community will add more and better features to this Valkyrie class which are beyond my capabilities at the moment!

Valkyrie II Ver.0.2

Postby Phanjam » Sat Jul 24, 2010 4:06 am

I am making this version 0.2 available - it is just a few cosmetic changes to version 0.1 as follows:

1) incorporated my "ponytail always on" mod - so now she's always in a ponytail
2) used Omunall's Demon Huntress armor in the Valkyrie wardrobe folder, so that armor style becomes the class default.

Here are some screenshots...

I didn't see any technical matters that were different from v 0.1 (pls read through that in the previous "v 0.1 notes" post).

Hope you like it!

Re: Community Mod "Valkyrie II" [CLASS]

Postby Sonaria » Sat Jul 24, 2010 6:48 am

I cant seem to get this to work, I've placed all the files in my mod directory and when I start torchlight and enter the character screen the class icon is invisible and when I (mouseover still shows) click it the game freezes for 30 seconds or so then crashes.

I'm running the latest steam version on a mac with snow leopard 10.6.4

Any help appreciated

Hi Sonaria. I'm sorry, I have zero experience running TL, let alone TL mods, on a mac  .

But I've had a similar experience on my Windows-based PC and this is how I've handled it... the very first time you run this mod you should clear out the mod cache (which is highly recommended) but it will still likely crash. When it does, run the game again but without clearing the mod cache. I've found that the game then runs smoothly after that - at least until the next time you clear out the mod cache ;) .

I have one clarification question too... you mentioned putting "all the files" into your mods folder. You should be putting only one single item from this mod into that folder, and that's the mod-folder itself (with everything in ti of course). So if you're putting individual files from this mod into your mods folder, it really isn't going to work.

Aside from these, I'll have to nose around the forum and try to dig up some more dirt on this. Will let you know as soon as I find something!

Well, there's an .imageset file in there. I know the Mac version has problems with that, but since I don't have a Mac I have no idea whether that's completely insignificant, or could cause the mod to not work >_>
Since it doesn't sound like a charactercreate.layout conflict, that's the only thing that immediately jumps out at me.

Also, Phanjam, I can't help but notice that there's a Cinematics folder in there, and that folder is empty. Is that intended?

Hi Velari! Yeah that's there because I was working on an intro sequence for the Valkyrie, but haven't got it finished yet. Do empty folders in mods cause problems? I didn't think so, which is why I left it in. But then again I could be completely wrong on that  !

No, I don't think that should cause any problems. I was just curious ;)

Hi Sonaria:

Can I ask you what other mods you have installed already? In many instances it comes down to mod conflicts.

Have you given my previous suggestions a try? How's it workin' out for ya?

I already have a character (0.1 version)... Do I have to delete her before installing this new version?

Hi Tuishimi! Thanks for playing this mod :)
No you don't need to delete your existing character. You might not even have to do the clear-mod-cache thing (I think I didn't have to)! She should play just fine :P

Just want to double check something with this mod. The devastate skill uses dex and magic for it's damage and for all intents and purposes is hamstring? I suppose it doesn't matter much for damage since it's only 5% of weapon damage.

Also, I couldn't find much detail about this, but what was the issue with using the original devastate skill?

The vanquisher mesh doesn't have an animation to use with devastate.

Firstly, thanks much Jarcho for answering kaply's question! I actually do not have the answers to that!

Which is my second point... Sorry I don't have the answers to your questions kaply :( . This mod is a break-out of the Destroyer's female counterpart (the Valkyrie) from the Yet Another Gender Mod (YAGM) by Chazyl. The YAGM provided gender counterparts for each of the standard classes.
Valkyrie = female counterpart of the Destroyer
Enchanter = female counterpart of the Alchemist
Executioner = male counterpart of the Vanquisher

All I did was break-out the files which support the Valkyrie class from the YAGM mod, to come up with this mod for a standalone Valkyrie. From there, the only major changes vs. the YAGM are some body.png tweaks, the fixed character selection screen, her new armors (borrowed from 7eg's Revealing Armors Mod) and her ponytail hairstyle (a small mod I made).

I would have loved to try tweaking her skills, but that was beyond my capabilities at the time I put it together (I still want to though ;) and I'm brushing up on that). So as of the current version 0.2 of this mod, the skills are exactly the same as Chazyl left them. I don't use Devastate much at all, so I didn't even notice that it was missing from the Valkyrie's repertoire!

Are you thinking of updating this mod with all-new skills? That would be great!

As Jarcho said and also with other class counterparts, there were animations that didn't fit. So those skills were not used.

Phanjam, I am tempted to try out this mod assembled by you, but, to be honest, the version number (0.3)... Eh, well, I usually don't touch any software/mod that isn't at least v1.0.; and in the case of mods, if they aren't available via TLeech. You said that this one is "very stable", but I would still like to read more comments from people who have installed and played the game with it. Anyway, it looks very promising. Keep up your good work. :)

If you think of any ways that the mod could be improved, please tell me about it. I'm getting ready to try giving her some new skills, so feedback from other users would be really great!
