Black Dog skin, with Denim saddlebags

Postby Versusforward » Thu Nov 05, 2009 8:25 am

Here's a pet mod of the default dog, I didn't like the grey one, so I modified him and made him black, with red eyes and a denim saddlebag. This is my first skin for TL.

Here's a link to the download - I put it up on megaupload just 'cause I couldn't figure out how to upload on the mod site.

I downloaded it and put it in the right folder and everything but it doesn't show up in game

edit: Oh sorry, read the readme now, (should have read it first time), and realised what I did wrong, thanks.

Thx alot for this mod I too found that the dog was too lightly colored, and the denim saddlebags was a nice touch!

Ok I'm being daft here and need a bit of guidance. I have the download and have read the readme file, but I am unsure how to replace the file in the zip folder. Is it that I have to unzip the folder content, swap the files over and then rezip the folder or is there a way to edit the contents of a zip folder without unzipping?
Mostly just checking before I start playing with things and possibly end up messing something up ;)

I have three things to say about this...

1. I love it!

I really don't like most pet mods, it has to be said, and the original dog is miles better than them in my opinion. This is the first one that's jumped out at me, and whilst it's not suited to my tinker-mad Alchemist, my Destroyer loves his husky. And that's what this is, a Husky! A very, very well done Husky. Nothing but praise, here.

2. Could you make something that looks akin to an Arctic Wolf?

This would almost be completely white, but not quite, as they tend to have spots of cream and off-white in their fur. Have a look here...

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&s ... f&oq=&aqi=

I'm asking this here because you did such a good job of this skinning effort that I feel you'd do an amazing job of putting together an Arctic Wolf skin, too.

3. This can be done as a mod!

Open up the Run dialogue via the Start Menu (or Win-key + R if you're in Windows 7) and type the following:

%AppData%\runic games\torchlight\mods

Click OK, then in the new Window, create a folder named 'Husky Skin'.

Go into that, then create media, then go into that and create models, then go into that and dog, and go into that. Put the dog_pet.dds file there, then when the game is run, it'll count this as a mod. I tested this and it works perfectly for me.

For those who want an easier approach...

http://rapidshare.com/files/303750172/HuskySkinMod.zip

Download this, and when your zip program asks you where you wish to decompress this file, enter this: %AppData%\runic games\torchlight\mods

If you'd like to link to this file, VersusForward, feel free! And again, thank you for a great skin!

+1 to the white wolf skin request!

Vagrant thanks for your input on running this as a mod in the game - however I think I am running something wrong somwhere along the lines. I've put the file into the correct folders in the mod directory and the game also detects this since it informs me that charcaters were last saved with a different mod setup previously and that using them is at my own risk. However I'm getting no black dog :( Is there a method of enabling mods ingame after placing the relevant files into the correct folder (I've searched about the forum, manual and game directory and I can't find any refrence to this) that I am just missing out on?

edit - worked it out (after playing with the tiger skin mod) instead of calling the folders "media" I was calling them "create media" which was not being recognised by the game, but the existance of a folder was registering as a mod. It's all working now! :)

Sorry about that, overread, I tend to fail at explanations, that's why I provided a zip. What I should have said is 'create a folder named media, then' et cetera, et cetera. Glad you got it figured, though!

No worries - what was confusing me even more though was not just the file names but the lack of a mod control feature as part of the game startup or as an ingame menu. That was where I was thinking I was going wrong - till I downloaded the other mod and saw the different file names.
It is a little odd that a heavily mod reliant game has no offical mod selection menu - maybe when the editor is released next week we will get that feature added in somewhere - till then I did find one activation control in the mods list - just a little app someone kindly made which does the job for now

Nice mod but be warned installing it loses all the fish (and i think spells, but not 100% sure) from your pet's inventory. I lost 12 big fish and 1 giant. Ouch :cry:

If you download the free program 7zip, you can add to the contents of the folder and even rename files in the zip without opening it. I recommend changing the original dog_pet.dds to original-dog_pet.dds or something similar, and then adding the new one.

You can drag and drop to the zip through 7zip.

Hope you like it! I'm working on Alchemist robot skins now :)

This is awesome! Downloading now. Thanks to everyone for the support! I'm workin' on alchemist bot mods to make the summoned Alchemist Construct's (robot minions) a little darker. I kind of wish the whole game could be skinned a little.. bleaker. Ya know?

Anyways, thanks guys! And awesome job on the artic wolf!

Vagrant, thanks so much for your kind words and support. I'm new to modding and if there's an easier way, well I'm all about it. Looks like we have an arctic wolf mod already but I'm down to work on any other skins if you or anyone has any suggestions!

@overread

Yeah, a mod menu really would help, I completely agree. I have my own reasons for thinking so too, and I'll get to that at the bottom of this post.

@Versusforward

No problem! I'm glad to offer support where it's deserved, and in this case it really was. I dig your Husky skin, and I'll be interested in seeing what other skins you do. You mentioned the Alchemist summons, and it occurs to me that Gorrim is probably in need of skins for his Occuli, which replace the Imps. So there's an idea. >.>

It'd be very nice to see the Alchemist's Golems redone to look like steel instead of... whatever metals they currently use. Looks to be gold/bronze.

As for skins for the dog, you could always do a pure black one, as there are Wolves swith black pelts in America, and you could do something based off the Mexican red Wolves, too. These ideas I'm throwing out to any modders too, and I have reasons for suggesting different skins for the pets, and I'll get to why a little later in this post.

@AttackGorilla

That's really good, and exactly what I was looking for, thank you!

---

As far as a mod menu for the game, I wish it did have one, because I'd love to assign differently skinned pets to different characters, and there's not much point in loading the alchemist mods for my Destroyer, and so on, and so on. I'd love to be able to have different mod lists load for different characters.

I am loathe to use it as an example, but this is something the community of World of Warcraft realised the necessity of, and much, much, much later, so did Blizzard themselves.

With so many mods out there that suit one particular class, or retextures like these, this is one feature I'd love. I'm not so much into the cat, so I pretty much have the dog on all my characters, and having that grey dog on all characters is rather dull.

I do have an idea though, and I'm offering this up to all the mod makers out there; since we can't enable mods for particular characters yet, would it be possible to have 'reskin potions/fish', so to speak? Basically, one could bye dye items for the dog, so we'd start with a normal dog, then pick up a cheap dye item from the vendor.

That way we could have a compilation of all the dog skins and allow the player to have different skins per character. I'd love to use the Arctic Wolf with my Alchemist, and the Husky suits my Destroyer.

Just throwing that out there, anyway. And I'll leave it at that as this brain dump is becoming a real wall of text. <.<

Vagrant, any chance that you (or VersusForward) will upload this to one of the mod sites? I just tried rapidshare and it said I'd need to be a premium member because all the free slots were taken.

Needlehawk, I tried making an account on the primary TL modding site but screwed up somewhere in the process. I'll get to it tomorrow, probably.

All - here's a sample of the Alchemist Contstructs (Robot minions) that are pretty bleak, in general.. one is a dark blackish gray steel color, the other is a greenish blue - looks like oxidized metal but darker in color. Both are similar as are the original bots (the first ones I made were too stark, or shiny, or colorful) but I like these two the best so far. Not the best dungeon setting to show off the colors but once I get the account on the modding site/s going I'll upload the finished versions there.

Thanks again for your support guys.
