1. Foreword

There are a great many skins out there for the dog, which gives him a more Wolfish appearance, but the dog is still very small, I decided to do a tiny edit to fix that. In the screenshot, the main thing of note is the size, the skin is one created by AttackGorilla and can be found in this thread.

Check out the bottom of this thread for recommended skins to use with this mod!

2. Preview

Image

Here you can see the size difference against the Alchemist model, it's quite an increase and far more suited to Wolf textures.

3. Installation

Download (hosted at the Runic Games fansite).

Once you have the file, open it in your favourite compressed file handler, and decompress it. When asked for a location, copy and paste in this:

%AppData%\runic games\torchlight\mods

Simply launching the game then will activate the mod.

To uninsall, do the following:

1. Hold the Windows key and press R.
2. Paste in: %AppData%\runic games\torchlight\mods
3. Hit OK.
4. Find the Dog to Wolf folder and delete it.

4. Usage

1. I've got a fresh install and I'm starting a new character.

Simply choose the Dog as your pet.

2. I'm creating a new character but I all ready have an existing one.

When you create a new character, it automatically loads the pet data from your existing character. Simply click Cat, then Dog again and it'll load the new template.

3. I wish to use this with the dog of an existing character.

This is possible, but it will cost you a fish! Go fish one up, then give it to your dog and wait out the transformation. When your dog turns back to normal, the game will pull the information from the mod's template, and your dog will be much bigger.

Enjoy!

5. Recommendations

Snowy White Wolf, with Denim Satchels (First post.)
Black Wolf, with Grey Satchels. (First post.)
Mexican Red Wolf, with Brown Satchels (First post.)
Black & White Husky, with Denim Satchels (First post.)
Arctic Wolf, with Light Blue Satchels (Later in the thread.)

Let me know if I've missed any!

6. Troubleshooting

Help, the mod doesn't work and/or things are going awry!

Assuming it's installed correctly, this could be down to two problems.

1.) You may have another mod installed which replaces DOG.DAT and relies on that replaced version. You should probably check to make sure that this isn't the case.

Do the following to check:

- Make sure you don't have my mod installed (delete it temporarily if you do).
- Hold the Windows key and press R.
- Type: cmd
- Hit enter.
- You should now have a new window, in that...
- Type: cd %AppData%\runic games\torchlight\mods
- Hit enter.
- Type: dir DOG.DAT /s
- Hit enter.
- Type: dir DOG.DAT.ADM /s
- Hit enter.

If either of those searches turns up a DOG.DAT or DOG.DAT.ADM result, then that mod is probably going to conflict with mine and you're going to have to choose one or the other, you can figure out which mod it is by looking at the path and seeing where the DOG.DAT file resides.

To get out of that window, type exit and hit enter.

2.) Patch 1.12 has issues with installing mods, there are things you may not be aware of that you need to do to get mods working.

You can look at this thread for a guide. I'd recommend creating and using the bat to launch Torchlight, or at least using the bat to occasionally clean out your mods folder. This could be causing problems with installing any new mods, mine included.

Thanks to AttackGorilla for mentioning this, it completely slipped my mind.

7. Updates

v1: Initial release.
v2: The pet selection screen when creating a new character now says Wolf instead of Dog.

Update #1: Added a section on compatibility, just in case.
Update #2: Changed the compatibility section to more sensible troubleshooting section, complete with info from AttackGorilla.
Update #3: Added a Recommendations section, and an Index.
Update #4: Updated the Recommendations section with the Black Wolf.

Did you try giving him the fish?

I gave him a fish... the timer ran out, he was still the same size.

And now TL will not start up for me...
After I removed this mod my game is corrupted.

**Looks like my Mods.dat file got corrupted, had to delete it and let the game recreate it.**

I did test this mod myself, hence the screenshot, not to mention that my mod is merely a simple template edit, something that many, many other mods do. So I'm not inclined to believe there's anything wrong with my mod, per se, but I'd appreciate it if others could confirm it works so that I can know I'm not going crazy.

I also made sure to test that the fish option works too, which it does, and that's unsurprising because that's default Torchlight behaviour. Whenever the pet calls a template it calls the template fresh, which means that it calls it from the mod. There are only two possibilities I can think of really which would result in the corruption occurring and the fish not working:

1. The mod might have been installed incorrectly, but I'm not sure how that could occur, so this is unlikely.

2. This is the more likely option: Another mod was present which made a drastic change to the pet system, with my mod being loaded after, it would have restored the Dog template, and thus conflicted with another mod.

I'll put a warning in my first post not to use my mod with any mods that drastically change the pet code, because that's what I think we're seeing here.

I have been noticing a lot of people are having issues with Mod installations lately.
Please make sure you read: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4911
The above thread is from Runic and explains how to use Mods with the most recent patch. V1.2 of Torchlight has a Mod bug that requires more user action for most Mods to now work correctly. I personally recommend creating the .bat file they spell out and then link you Torchlight shortcut to the .bat file so the Mods are rebuilt everytime you start Torchlight.

Oooh, thanks AG, that completely slipped my mind! I've added that to the first post.

I've updated this! I'm also looking into making a dyes mod for the various Wolf skins.

Hi Vagrant. Just saying thanks for this mod - so simple but so great! I'm using this plus an arctic skin for my Paladin's pet.
