Have tries to in same mode and I can not even get in, have disabled my anti-virus and same problem, have tried everathing that I could imagine and nothing.
when the game get's slow ist the processor at 4%, in normal speed is the processor at 50%

I've excluded the complete Steam folder and the lag issues dissapeared. Now the only issue I'm having is the game freezing for ~10 seconds every 30 minutes or so. The strange thing is that when this happens all download traffic from Steam also stops (I'm monitoring it on the LCD of my G15).

My only problem with Torchlight is that it randomly freezes. That is, for whatever reason the entire game just *stops* functioning for several seconds.
I'm semi-wondering if it's simply trying to spawn a lot of incoming mobs or somesuch, as the rest of the game runs smoothly, if occasionally a bit laggy in overclustered battles on molten rock tileset.

I have my windows new instaliert and it seems to work fine now.
The game was not freezing anymore when I was plying in offline mode. Now I can destroy barrels without the game freezing.
Don't know why it happens but hope that it can help someonne.

I could use some help....
I bought the game on steam. When I start up the game, it runs fine for a while, but then it freezes and then the screen goes black, and ctrl+alt+delete doesn't work. I tried running it in safe mode, but all it does is give me an error message when I try to run it. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Hi there, I recently purchased a new game Torchlight last night from my account. After downloading and installing the game I began recieving an error message every time I attempt to play the game. Error: "Torchlight game executable has stopped working". This is what i've tried already. Ive replaced the setings.txt, ive deleted all the folders manually and uninstalled, ive ran in admin mode, Ive ran in safe mode, ive re-installed and downloaded the game. I STILL GET THIS MESSAGE, it wont let me past the loading screen!! I'm very upset that this is occuring as it's a newly purchased video game. Is this what I am to expect from future purchases from your company??

After googling this issue I've found that this is more serious than expected. It is becoming an extremely common error.

Now I have done nearly EVERYTHING you guys have pointed out on this forums, and well as the Steam forums.. I've gone to the extent to update all my drivers, invest more time into this crap and still end up with the same results. I've NEVER experienced such BS from a video game company.

At this point I almost feel scammed out of my money, possibly like this whole damn thing is a rip off and will be opening a claim for full refund if i do not find resolution.

I can't seem to shake a crash problem - keep getting a C++ Runtime error crash within 5-10 minutes of playing. Running on Steam - did Safemode=1, then upped the resolution a little to fill more of my screen.

Sorry for the length of this, but you folks asked. My Dxdiag first, truncated after about the top half, then the Ogre file after this.

Seems lots of folks have problems like this - bummer. Hoping for help - fun game, except for crashing.

Best -

Re: Problems Running in Steam?

Postby valdema863 » Wed Dec 30, 2009 2:04 pm

I've now tried a variety of solutions - others might get more joy out of them than I did:

* Used MobilityModder.net to install Catalyst 9.9 drivers (MobilityModder doesn't work on later Catalyst versions). Worked to get my results above - about 5-10 minutes of play, then crash, until finally no play at all.

* Installed official HP 6930p laptop drivers for ATI Radeon card. Didn't help after a while (see below).

* Following http://tinyurl.com/yzhtw9x on the OGRE forums, I shifted to OpenGL as the rendering engine by editing local_settings file in Steam (found by Start->Run %APPDATA%\Runic Games\Torchlight - this is where the OPENGL=0 setting seems to live on my Steam install), and then adding a slightly edited version of plugins.cfg to the directory where that file is located (happens to be C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\torchlight on my machine if anyone else is hunting for it with a Steam install). This gave me extended play (10 minutes) before crashing (see below), then gradually shortened time between crashes, and now does not open at all.

* Shifted between OpenGL and D3D renderings on the fly, between crashes. Worked for a while - esp. around Town Portals that seemed to cause the OpenGL rendering to crash, but were handled fine by D3D. Now neither works much - OpenGL won't finish opening from the "Continue" buttion at all, and D3D crashes out within a minute of hitting any kind of battle.

* Tried reinstalling the two sets of drivers from scratch a couple of times, in combination with the above - hasn't helped.

Sooo - difficult to know what's up. Postings on OGRE boards suggest there are indeed difficulties with D3D, esp on ATI. Would be dandy if folks at Runic could find a patch of some kind.

So tough, as a commercial developer, when you pick a core toolset that may wind up buggy on many customers' computers. Unclear who should/can fix, not to mention HOW to fix - presumably, bought the toolset to AVOID getting into the middle of the middleware, eh?

I'm bagging off playing (meaning: playing with settings/installs - obviously can't play the game!), and hope for news from experts. Fun game, but can't recommend paying for to my pals at this point, given the support issues.

One more thing: on a whim, I tried increasing my pagefile size - I noted from my dxdiag specs above it was a bit small. When I made it the same as the physical memory size, I got a few more hours of useful (i.e., only every 20 mins crash) play with the latest HP ATI drivers (now can't do OPenGL at all, interestingly enough).

Now, curiously, can play for less than a few seconds, with a new (to me) Ogre error message:

19:39:37: OGRE EXCEPTION(7:InternalErrorException): Unable to load texture from MEDIA/PARTICLES/TEXTURES/GLOW/CRESCENT2.DDS :Ran out of memory in D3D9Texture::_loadNormTex at C:\svn\Projects\ogre161\RenderSystems\Direct3D9\src\OgreD3D9Texture.cpp (line 580)

Probably all the same stuff - some memory problem (with the card?) that is not well managed somewhere.

Sigh.

Best -

Hello,

I try the 2 hours demo of Torchlight (downloaded on the official site http://www.torchlightgame.com), my tow hours work perfectly. (i don't unninstall the demo...)

I'm having a similar problem of random runtime errors (among other crashes), and tried safemode. Whereas before the crash would occur after 5-30 minutes of playing, Safemode crashed it as soon as I launched it from steam.

Thank you to everyone who has posted solutions so far.

I'm probably not supplying any new info here, but I think I've got my copy, which was crashing often, to work properly now.

Purchased through Steam on a PC with XP and an older Radion X800 XT card. I was getting this error mostly, but a variety of "out of memory" errors as well:

Code: Select all
01:20:01: OGRE EXCEPTION(3:RenderingAPIException): Error Presenting surfaces in D3D9RenderWindow::swapBuffers at C:\svn\Projects\ogre161\RenderSystems\Direct3D9\src\OgreD3D9RenderWindow.cpp (line 819)

I tried a variety of things (running in a window, reducing the detail/shadows, etc.). The last two things I did seem to work. Since I wasn't systematic, I'm not sure which was the key. I downloaded a new driver for the video card. The ATI Catalyst Legacy driver was updated in November, 2009, and I had an older version. I also lowered "Shadows" in the settings from "High" to "Medium." I restarted, and gamed for 3 hours without a crash. So, one of those two changes worked for me. I now have both "shadows" and "particle detail" set to "medium," but it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game. Again, not revolutionary, and most have probably tried these fixes, but it worked for me.

I am having a problem with Torchlight (in Steam). When I launch it, the splash screen appears, and then minimizes itself after a few seconds. When it minimizes, the button on the taskbar reads "Torchlight (Not Responding)". After a few seconds, the text changes to "Torchlight" and I can hear the character select screen. However, I cannot restore or maximize the game window.

I originally downloaded the game demo through Steam and played until reaching the level-cap. After reaching the level-cap, I bought the game (once again through Steam--after the release of the Achievements update), and continued playing. After a bit, I decided to create a second character. My first character was a Vanquisher on Easy w/a pet cat, the second one an Alchemist on Normal w/a dog. I played for a bit using the second character--no problems. Now, when I try to launch Torchlight the above mentioned happens.

Another problem that I have had is that sometimes when I quit the game (only when it is set to fullscreen), the screen will just stay black. I can't Alt-Tab to other windows. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing. I basically just have to wait until my computer goes to standby. Once I bring it out of standby, the desktop looks normal, and there may or may not be a minimized instance of Torchlight sitting in the taskbar. I've had this problem with other games, so it may just be a Steam issue.

I tried entering SAFEMODE=1, and received an error message ("Torchlight game executable has stopped working"). There wasn't an error message in the Ogre file, but I included it regardless.

Re: Problems Running in Steam?

Postby Rooster » Sun Jan 03, 2010 7:09 pm

*** FIX ***

I purchased Torchlight through Steam and got a patch immediately about a month or so ago. I was able to load in, but switching from full screen to windowed caused my game to lock. And to lock on game start every time after this. Setting SAFEMODE=1 simply produced a crash, ogre.log produced nothing interesting and it was frustrating.

WARNING: THIS FIX DELETED MY SAVE. But it made it work again.

Go to Start -> Run: %appdata%\runic games

Delete or rename the entire torchlight folder.

Turn off anything like SAFEMODE=1.

Now start Torchlight. I'm even able to change video resolution and play windowed fine now. Hopefully this helps others.

Hey, it worked; and thanks to Steam Cloud, I didn't lose my saves. I copied my save folders/files from the renamed Torchlight folder into the new Torchlight directory and the game still runs, so I'm thinking that there was something in one of the settings files that was causing the problem.

You sir, deserve an internet.

My problem: I was having some problem after the splash screen. The game was going slow, and the refresh rate was about 1 frame every 20 sec or something like that. I could not reach the settings since the graphics all looked like a really bad painting.

My fix was this: go to run, %appdata%\runic games, then in the Torchlight folder there is that local_settings.txt file. The only thing I did was to change RENDERBEHIND :1 to 0. After that my game has been working fine. I hope this can help someone with problems.

Hi guys! Excuse me if I made some mistakes in my text but my english is not that good. :)

I'm not really sure if that is a problem for this section here but I hope you can help me. I heard there is a official and legal Runic Games Mod for a Reskill Potion. Me and my friends skilled our characters pretty wrong so we wanted to reskill them. So we read about a way to open a console ingame to get such a potion. It said, we should change something inside our "Settings.txt" data to open this console but we cannot find such a data. Does this data even exist? Or is it hidden or something like that?

Please help us! :D

Edit: We play torchlight with Steam of course :3

I'm playing a Lv 41 destroyer and am experiencing the same crashes. I've noticed that i will never crash black palace's maps, however i leveled my alchemist to 42 and never experienced a crash. That being said, i leveled my alchemist first before playing a destroyer.

Am using a Geforce8800 and playing with most graphic settings set to a minimum. ./slash wrist
