[Workaround] Stuck Characters

I was lucky and it worked for my 22 Destroyer, I got knocked in between some rocks after a knockback. I was going to be really pissed since this is my 2nd destroyer, on the first Overseer bugged out and wont come down from one of the balchonies, so i've already had to start over. I was in a High Security dungeon, which sucks losing the dungeon, but better that losing the character. Pretty lame that you can lose a toon due to something so gimmicky.

edit: Just looked and lost everything in my stash. Awesome....
Anyway to recover the lost items? I'm starting to lose my patience with this game.

Just when I thought it couldn't happen to me, my character got stuck while doing one of Hatch's quests. After searching through the forum, I came across the post about how to bring up the console (my box version didn't "automatically" have console ability). So I did what was necessary to get unstuck and then...SHOCK!...found out my stash was completely empty! Thankfully, all I had in there, really (as best I can remember) were some gems that I was upgrading...plus a couple of low-level maps (the 1-10 maps) so I didn't really lose that much. Thank goodness my Stared Stash was intact!! Like novenaradio, though, I'm wondering if there's any way to recover the lost stash. Is it 'just' a console bug? Is Runic aware of this?

On the flip-side, this experience is (hopefully) teaching me to do more frequent back-ups.

Guys, my 22 Alchemist is stuck in a special cavern, was fleeing from a troll and suddenly stood on a rock, teleport a.s.o don't work, console doesn't work, nothing works. Could someone propably make a video and show how one destucks oneself? Or propably destuck my charackter for me and sent it back then?? Pls.

what do you mean "the console doesn't work"

it doesn't come up ?
it comes up, but the ascend command doesn't work ?

what country are you in ? do you have a standard US keyboard ?

did you follow the directions quoted by Draknalor above on the previous page ?

you have to completely exit the game, then change the settings to make the console open, then start the game and load your char so your in the stuck position, then (for a US keyboard) press shift ~, that's the little wavy line next to the number 1
that brings up the console
then type either
town
or
ascend

A word of warning. I managed to get unstuck using the method as described ... but then lost all the items in my stash. The shared stash was fortunately untouched.

I had gone through a phase beast portal and some creature knocked me back through a wall and up a cliff where I'm not stuck.
I'm playing the Steam version, which crashes(?) for me when I try to enable the console...

Can someone please fix my savegame and help me?

I was stuck in a map portal in an area between a wall, rock and other broken debris. I first tried to apply the more recent patch (v.1.15) which after installed, told me that I needed to re-install the game again
(even though I had the Encore PC CD version and had selected that to download the patch). I could not get back into the game until I uninstalled the patch and re-installed the game (luckily my save game was still intact). Once I did that, I tried the suggested solution to ascend. After applying this, I was able to get back to town and both of my stashes were as I had left them. The only setting I changed was Console:0 to Console:1 and saved the text file before I re-entered the game. I then followed the same instructions to get to the Console and typed "ascend". I tried it several times and my "private" stash and "shared" stash remained intact. My OS is Vista.

I just registered to post some advice for European users with Umlauts in their keyboard layout. (ÖÄÜ)
I tried some combinations to get the console working, and as a C-64 veteran, giving up is never
an option. So I found out the following, you have to press:

SHIFT + Ö

for the console to come up. The command 'Town' didn't work for me, but 'Ascend' did.
Also my stash was completely intact, nothing lost. Also I was not in a regular
dungeon, I was in a Level 10-20 random dungeon.

My system is Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

Hope this may help some you folks out there.
If not, just try shift and some other keys,
you may have luck, just like our Scandinavian
friend some pages ago, or like myself.

HELP PLEASE!

The advice got me unstuck but I lost everything in my stash. EVERYTHING! I had all my gems that I was constantly upgrading for socketing...

What can I do to get them back? How did moving up one level destroy my stash?

Luckily I didn't lose my stash but I lost my VASMAN mission for turning in the Savage Ember.
I was in that special dungeon when I got stuck by one of the troll trap doors and some stairs. Any way I can get that special dungeon back?

Hey All,
Like a lot of you, I've just been through a Phase Portal, and like all of you, havoc was wreaked and I cleared the place out. I stepped into the return portal, grinning at a genocide (in this case versus Mimics) well-waged, and...the game crashed...

I rebooted, and my beloved character appeared at the exit portal--except now the map arrow had changed to become a down arrow rather than the usual up. The game thinks this is the door in rather than the door out. Of course, this being a Phase Portal, Town Portal Spells/Scrolls don't work. I can run around as much as I like, I haven't gotten wedged in a rock or teleported to some strange ledge, but I'm still left without an exit.

Oh, and the usual basic support questions answered: Bought it online (Not Steam). Currently using a MacBook running the most recent version of Leopard (Not Snow Leopard, just it's regular non-snowy cousin).

Finally, while I'm more computer literate than a room full of grandmas, when it comes to the more advanced stuff my specialties tend to be more...selective. Please feel free--indeed, I encourage you--to spell things out in the most minute detail, as if I was a complete and utter idiot. I won't be offended, and the worst-case scenario is that I'll know what you're talking about.

I guess the console has to be enabled upon game start for it to work..

Even at the coast of losing some stash items, I'd be more than willing to try to 'ASCEND' if I had a way to acces the console... that Config file doesn't exist on the Mac side (at least not in the Steam version, or if it does heck if i know where it was placed, i've looked everywhere thanks to spotlight search)...

my situation: kill a phase beast on the first floor of the volcanic prison area (i dont recall the floor number, 21 maybe?), opens a phase portal, i say what the heck and go in. i enter as seen in this pic (http://twitpic.com/1nn223) the columns rise to allow passage, i cross and the game crashes, this repeats 3 times, as the game placed the save point right as i entered the dungeon, and Steam Cloud did not ask if i wanted to use older server-synched location files or newer local files as it had on a previous crash. "4th time's the charm" I hope... but when it loads up the 4th time, wham, the columns do not rise... console of course does not appear with pressing anything anywhere that i can find. so that leaves me with 22 wasted hours on day of purchase, and that kinda stinks.

if anyone has any ideas please chime in. otherwise it's just such a waste of rare/unique gear! and i was so enjoying teleporting things to death with Ember Phase

Hard/Software: Latest release of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, brand new 21.5" iMac Core2Duo, Fresh install of Steam+Mac and a fresh purchase and install of Torchlight.

not hidden but thank you! didnt see the runic folder there when i looked, only the steam one XD, lets give this a try... (especially since my new in-the-meantime vanquisher just found a great belt for the stuck alchemist )

I just got myself stuck. I am running Torchlight via steam on a macbook pro with the intel i7 processor (2.66GHz) and 4Gb RAM. I am stuck on a side quest and can't use the town portal. I would like to get unstuck. I am not really sure what JamesL and jdcrite are talking about. I wouldn't mind if it was dumbed down I am new to mac. Also I am not sure how to post my screenshot

first thing to do is make a copy of your char save file

I have no idea where that is on a mac
after making a copy of your char's save file then you'll have to edit the game's settings file

from what I've read you should be able to find a settings file in
username/Library/application support/runic games/torchlight

your char's save file is probably in there too somewhere

so you completely exit the game, then open the settings file with a text editor, then change console:0 to console:1
then start the game and load your stuck char
then you would press
shift tilda
tilda ~ is the little wavy line next to the one
this would bring up a console in game

of course shift tilda works for windows, but I have no idea if its the same for mac
then in the console you would type
ascend town
and that should put you at the stairway
