[Workaround] Stuck Characters

I'm on a mac (just d/l steam etc.) but i'm stuck in a corner too!!

where can i find the setting.txt file??

I'm playing on a Mac, and here's what worked for me:

1) As a previous poster stated, the settings.txt file is located in this directory:
username/Library/application support/runic games/torchlight

2) It is settings.txt, NOT local_settings.txt.

3) Make sure that you've quit Torchlight and Steam before doing this (otherwise I think the changes don't take).

4) Change Console :0 to Console :1

5) Start-up Steam and Torchlight

6) Load Character (don't continue) while holding SHIFT + Tilde (~).

7) Unlike on PC, a console window did not appear for me. Instead my character loaded on a blank green background, and I still couldn't move. However, I COULD activate the town portal. I had been in a special quest dungeon, which normally deactivates the town portal, but in this weird green-screen mode, I was able to do it. Once I traveled through the portal, and appeared in town, the game played like normal without a restart.

Problem:

After doing the above, I tried to re-enter the dungeon from an old portal (had been doing sidequests) and it took me to some glitch screen that disabled movement and also couldn't use the town portal spell. Currently my game is stuck in that dead zone, and I'm trying to figure out a way around it.

EDIT:

On top of this, now after a Steam Update, Torchlight is loading as the "Demo Version" and won't let me load my character. Shortly after loading, the game freezes entirely, and because I'm running in full screen, I have to restart my whole computer just to get out of it.

What the hell is wrong with this game?

EDIT #2:

I fixed the "demo version" freezing problem by right-clicking Torchlight in the Steam Library, selecting "Properties", and in the "Local Files" tab, clicking "Verify Integrity of Game Cache". It did something that made Steam say "Torchlight has finished downloading" (uh...?) and then the demo version text went away.

Yikes this is really tough. Same thing happened to my buddy over here on his Macbook Pro. We tried changing the Console to :1 from :0, but nothing happened (followed the other steps as well). As a matter of fact we can't even continue or load a character any more unless we change the resolution settings for some reason?!!? No console prompt popped up. He's in a side quest dungeon right now on level 1. Could that have anything to do with it since he's not able to ascend from level 1?

so you started the game, loaded your char to the stuck position and then pressed shift ~

do you have a US english keyboard ?

I don't have his Macbook Pro with me right now, but when exactly do you press the SHIFT~ combo? After you're already in the game?

Windows 7 (tested on 64-bit) users please note the key combination for accessing the console is '@' (SHIFT + ')

on American english keyboards the combination of keys needed to bring up the console is shift ~
but the above thread tells how to change that and use different keys

he changed the key mappings so you can bring up the console just by pressing Enter

so completely quit and exit the game, make a copy of your character's save file (its called 1.SVT or 2.SVT or something), then edit he settings.txt file, save and close the file, restart the game, load your character to the stuck position, press the Enter to bring up the console
in the console type
ascend town
press Enter to submit the command

your char should now be at the entrance of the level

I got stuck in Secret Mine (on a ledge, just like the other player). I'm playing on a Macintosh via Steam. I would appreciate any help - I can't seem to find the settings.txt file to enable the console and don't know where my character file might be hiding to email it to you.

I'm a Mac user and I too was stuck in the game. I've tried all the methods posted in this thread without any success. However, I'd like to report that what ended up worked for me was to edit the settings.txt file at a different location. At the first, I had a strong suspicion that the settings.txt file for Mac might be saved in a different location because none of the changes I made to the settings.txt file under "/Users/Username/Library/Application Support/runic games/torchlight" made any differences. Sure enough, the actual settings.txt file is saved under "/Applications/Torchlight.app/Contents/SharedSupport/CrossOverGames/support/default/drive_c/users/crossover/Application Data/runic games/torchlight" under the packaged contents. So for a mac user, you first go to the application folder and right click on the Torchlight file and select "packaged contents". Then drill down to the directory described above (starting from Contents).

The only problem I came to cross was that items stored in one of the vault (there are 2 total) were completely gone. However, for me, it was the overflow chest vault and I don't care much for items stored in it anyway.

Level 26 Alchemist stuck on Floor 18 in Tu't Caverns.

Knocked back behind a rock and bridge railing. Unable to move at all. Steam console is no help.

Never mind.

After editing the settings.txt file (console=1) and booting up Torchlight, the Steamcloud will advise that your local files are newer than what the cloud has stored and it will ask if you want to use your local files.

You MUST use your local files (settings.txt) in order to have the console command take effect.

Once I figured that out, it was cake.

Start game from the Load Character screen.
Verify I'm still stuck.
Activate console.
Type 'ascend'.
Bingo!

I found myself on the "down stairs" of the next higher level.

And my stash was intact.

Well I followed the instructions on the first page. Never got the "ascend console' whatever that is, however was pleasantly surprised to see me booted back to town, Ah well I thought so I never completed the treasure map dungeon no biggy, went to my stash only to find it empty, changing the settings txt file wiped my stash

How hard can it be to put an /unstuck command in game FFS? You got 13 pages of people getting stuck, surely the devs must know that this is an issue?

I guess my stash is gone for good then?

first thing to do is make a copy of your char save file

I have no idea where that is on a mac
after making a copy of your char's save file then you'll have to edit the game's settings file

from what I've read you should be able to find a settings file in
username/Library/application support/runic games/torchlight

your char's save file is probably in there too somewhere

so you completely exit the game, then open the settings file with a text editor, then change console:0 to console:1
then start the game and load your stuck char
then you would press
shift tilda
tilda ~ is the little wavy line next to the one
this would bring up a console in game

of course shift tilda works for windows, but I have no idea if its the same for mac
then in the console you would type
ascend town
and that should put you at the stairway
