[How To] Install Torchlight under Linux

Postby BrianW » Fri Jul 08, 2011 10:29 am

We've just released a native linux build through the Humble Bundle 6. These instructions will be changing soon.

Here's the old post:

Spoiler: show
While our platform decisions are never final, no version of Torchlight exists for Linux at this time. However, it’s a fairly trivial matter to install Steam via PlayOnLinux, which is available from http://www.playonlinux.com/. Once you’ve installed Steam, you’ll be able to install Torchlight.

PlayOnLinux download and installation instructions for most mainstream Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu or Fedora, are available from http://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html. Additional installation instructions (you’ll need the Tahoma truetype font in order to view text in the Steam client) are available from http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki ... _.28POL.29.

In most cases, installation will go smoothly; however, please note that you are proceeding at your own risk: we cannot guarantee technical support for Linux installations and can assume no responsibility for issues which arise as a result. If you’re experiencing a problem, feel free to reply to this thread and either one of us or a knowledgeable member of the community will jump in and try to help out where possible. You may also be able to get further support at the PlayOnLinux community forums located at http://www.playonlinux.com/en/forums.html.

If don’t have the Steam version of Torchlight, you may still be able to install it via Wine alone; however, again, please note that you’re proceeding at your own risk. More information about installing Torchlight via Wine is available at http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... ngId=45971.

Hi !

I am a Linux user.

Another way to play perfectly Torchlight (Steam version and others) on Linux : CrossOver Games, link : http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=6534

Crossover games is described like this :

"With CrossOver Games, you can run many popular Windows games on your Intel OS X Mac or Linux PC. CrossOver comes with an easy to use, single click interface, which makes installing your games simple and fast. Once installed, your game integrates seamlessly with your Desktop. Just click and run! It's like running Windows on your Mac or Linux machine, but without Windows. No rebooting, no switching to a virtual machine, and no Windows Operating System license required!"

My system :
- Ubuntu 10.10
- Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX
- Crossover Games 10.1.1

Torchlight has a "gold rank" on my PC, and i am also able to install Mods ! (for example "transmod" - french translator)

Hope this can help !

Best regards,

MC

Torchlight 2 on Linux (wine)

Got current steam version 1.11.5.3 on wine 1.5.6
It's not perfect, still got issues, but it's working more or less.
Note: Demo version launches, updates and crashes (likely a DRM issue) so I won't test that one.

  • If you don't have winetricks, get it here.
  • If you don't have steam - winetricks steam
  • If you need redists - winetricks vcrun2008 vcrun2010 d3dx9
Minor tweaks:

Optional set VideoMemorySize string in wine regedit HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Wine > Direct3D (value in MB, 1024 for my card)
Optional disable GLSL in wine regedit HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Wine > Direct3D (string: UseGLSL value: disabled)
Optional force 60 FPS cap in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > DirectDraw (string: ForceRefreshRate value: 60)

If you have steam running, launch the game with this:
Code: Select all
  #! /bin/bash
WINEDEBUG=-all nice -20 wine c:/path/to/Torchlight2.exe
