[SOLVED] [Linux] Crash when attempting to enter a portal

Hello!

I would like to report a malfunction in the game: a crash.
Because of it, I'm unable to progress in the game, and it has never subsided so far.
The crash occurs just after a loading screen flashes, before which I have attempted to enter a 'Portal to Glyph Room'; I've successfully obtained a piece from the first Glyph Room, and proceeded to the next level and faced this small problem. This problem also seems to appear when a certain NPC opens up a portal for me to obtain an item from the level.
I've noticed it denies me the ability to progress deeper in the game, perhaps certain levels have unique sprite/texture/monster/effect... that causes this crash.

The game works flawlessly until this point, although there exist some rendering issues (third hero's entire head is missing).

I can completely confirm this problem. The same happens here in the humbleBundle Linux Version x68_64

From my experience I would say this is simple a malformatted or missing image file.
As I assume you work around missing textures automatically, this seems to be malformed then.

I can't actually tell which texture is loaded here. If you tell me how to find out, I will.

BTW.: Great game. Hmm, Mouse Wheel scrolling does not work though, but I don't really need it (is there another way to scroll the scene?)

The scrollwheel should zoom in/out but doesn't seem to work in the Linux port.

I am also experiencing this crash. It started on the Kaleidoscope Pearl quest at the 'Glyph Room' portal. Since taking a Portal to Town from Floor 12, I am now also unable to access any of the three portals on Floor 9 without the game crashing immediately.

I had the same issue.
Installation of libtxc_dxtn (adds support of s3tc to Mesa) solved this problem in my case.

Video Card: core i5 integrated
Driver: mesa 8.0.4-2

OK, so weird thing. I went to grab a fresh Ogre.log to submit to support per http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?p=114959#p114959, and... the game didn't crash.
I haven't rebooted the computer since the last crash, but for some reason it seems to be working now. I did run the game to get the version number off of the main screen, and exit without playing, last night though. I don't know if that could have cleared some flag somewhere, but.. there it is.

Next crash I'll immediately grab Ogre.log.

The 19th level crash is discussed here, and seems to be due to a non-power-of-two texture size (which older OpenGL graphics cards don't support): viewtopic.php?f=24&t=34893

Core i3 integrated, and this fixed the issue for me, as well. Wish there were something in the README for this or something, since this is a totally non-obvious solution, and it makes Torchlight look less stable than it is on a very common set of hardware.

The deal with S3TC support is this: The library is required for *encoding* textures into S3TC format, but the *decoding* is built into the graphics hardware, and so it's available whether you install the library or not. In an ideal world, there would be a flag to say "supports encoding" and "supports decoding" and Mesa would set them appropriately, and everything would be fine. Unfortunately, there's only one flag that means "supports encoding and decoding", which means Mesa doesn't know whether to set that flag or not. If Mesa claims to "support encoding and decoding", and gets handed a pre-encoded texture to decode, everything's fine. On the other hand, if it gets handed an decoded texture to encode, it's stuck.

It turns out that Torchlight only uses pre-encoded textures, so if you tell Mesa to claim full S3TC support, it will Just Work, even though Mesa doesn't support encoding.

There are two ways to make Mesa claim full S3TC support. First, you can install the "libtxc_dxtn" library, which might be illegal in your country, and Torchlight won't actually use anyway. The other way is to create a file named ".drirc" (without the quotes) in your home directory, with the following contents:

It turns out that with Mesa 7.11 and newer, all mesa drivers support force_s3tc_enable as an environment variable, so editing the global settings in dri.conf is no longer required.

Users can simply create a wrapper script with the following content:

force_s3tc_enable=true /usr/local/games/Torchlight/Torchlight.bin.x86_64 "$@"

...and then call this script whenever they want to start the game (instead of calling Torchlight.bin.x86_64 directly).

The developers could probably also integrate this into the actual executable.
