I don't know whether to hope that those are NOT some kind of enchanted skis...
...Or to hope that they are.

Nice post Jerich, as usual.
What I found bit strange was amount of uniques found - 40 seems too much. Wonder what mods those uniques have - hope it's not just boosted magic item mods. Some new skills on unique set items would be nice - would spice up the hacking and slashing a bit.
Also first time I see spells mentioned again. Last time there were not even slots for placing spells on character.. so does anyone know if spells are done same way as in TL1 ?

While 40 seems kind of extreme to me too, It is tough to know what the actual balance will look like. The drop rate could have been tuned to allow staff to play with more uniques.

Pretty much 1 unique per lvl :D. almost half of them are from bosses, dunno how much of bosses were killes but it would seem they are best source of uniques. Anyone knows what's "special chest" exactly means ?

Hey man really nice write up but I feel there is a slight error in the Diablo 3 comparison.

How does this compare to the Diablo III loot game?
From what we know about Diablo III, the developers are trying to deincentivize boss runs. After the first kill, uniques will primarily drop from normal monsters. This means that loot will be much more spread out and less focused. If I was to make a mining analogy... Diablo III will be like strip mining and Torchlight II will be more like mining ore veins.

While yes they are/were trying to "dincentivize" boss runs, the best loot is said to be gathered from Champions not normal monsters. This encourages exploration of the map instead of a mad rush to the boss.

Also now with the inclusion of the Nephalem Valor buff, you get a loot/gold buff for each champion that you kill which is applied to the boss. So the boss will still have the best loot drop after you have defeated the Champions and received the buff.

Nephalem Valor though is unlocked at 60 and does not apply to pre level 60, however still the best place for loot will be the Champions.

That are really too much unique drops. How many uniques will there be in game?

Do we even know what kind of unique's the drops were? I think saying that there are too many unique drops this early is dangerous. If we know what dropped, then we could make a more accurate argument, but I feel like we only have some of the information, but not enough to make a strong argument.

Over 1400, not sure if that includes sets, probably does.
JDwiker mentioned this.

Also, agree with Rusty.

I think people are thinking about 40 purple items (those weren't the unique tier right?) dropping and that's why you think it's a lot... Just because it's unique doesn't mean it's good or something you'll use.

Holy c**p. I guess they will not all have unique art, and in game model
Then it's not much, if only 40 dropped.

Good point. Nephalem valor was announced after I wrote the OP. It does change the comparison a bit and is a good move by Blizzard compared with the system they first announced. My guess is that Blizzard changed their loot model due to overwhelming feedback.

It's been implied that they all or almost all have unique in-game models/art.
Yeah, I'm with you, I cursed out loud in joy when I read the info for the first time.

Oh, and that was the end of 2011, I'm betting they've added some more, 1-3 hundred more maybe? This is total speculation though, it could be even more or none at all.

Back on topic. This has bothered me in every arpg actually. Equipment shops feel useless as you progress through the game, I mean they don't sell uniques. How about a set of 80 or so uniques that can ONLY appear in the town shops, and the odds of them being sold go up the more you buy from the store?

As with any stuff like that, you will have players camping shop (after buying some stuff to boost chances) for rerolls till it show up. I'd rather have something like barter "I give you epic and a (big)bag of money, you will give random epic of similiar quality".

That way it could not (xcept for save-hacks but if player wants to cheat he will use console/editor anyway) be spammed as you have a limited gold AND need epic of certain quality to begin with. That would be a way to reroll epic that's useless for your class/build combo and alternative for sinking gold in enchanting

Very interesting ~ to my eye, it actually looks like Champions need a slight weighting increase [only 6 blues from champions? this certainly wasn't the case in the beta], and people will be farming the chapter bosses like mad to get their Uniques; although this was readily apparent in the beta, with people constantly running Grell / Regent. Not sure there's a fix to that, or needs to be (?).

Thanks for the info / link btw.

Oh, p.s.

Pedestal, not pedastal ;)
