TorchED and TorchEd2

So, I'm late to the party. I have just stumbled upon torchlight and torchED. I'm hoping to start modding and getting a little stunted by the program seeing as to how I have zero game creation skills except for Sc's map editor.

I was wondering if I could get some input on TorchED2.

Is the program more simple to use or about the same as TorchED? I know their will be more features, but will if help to build a understanding of the original TorchED, or just get ready to cram session TorchED2?

TorchEd2 is essentially the same application with more functionality, according to the devs. TorchEd is good practice to get familiar with the toolset but there will be changes, and additional moddability.

That said, nobody's seen it yet and nothing is set in stone. TEd2 isn't gonna be out til at least a month after TL2.

Yup. Might as well start using it now. It's pretty simple though. Easier than most game's editors.

I've never tried the editor before, but is it possible to do new game modes with it, like some tower defense/dota like mechanics?

From what I've seen in the first TorchED, maybe not. If you did, it would require a ton of extra scripting. However, Max confirmed that this time there will be a lot more functionality. For TL2, they're releasing exactly the same tools they did to build the game with, so I'd imagine this would be a possibility.

Not to mention, the original Torchlight is only singleplayer and a DOTA style game requires multiple players.

that's true, didn't thougt about that ;)
But nonetheless some team-based multiplayer mods would be nice, maybe even with chars/equip from vanilla TL2

I actually started a thread about that! I would love to see some cool pvp one's myself or maybe a zombie survival one?

Ok, so a bigger question. If I plan to mod with TED2, and plan to remake classes and skills, it is to be understood that there will be more options with the new editor. So, if I begin work in Torched, then 2 comes out, i might be going back and re-doing a lot of the modding work. I'm sure Torched files will be compatible with TED2. But If I design a skill or class now, and the new editor presents better feature or offers... time = wasted?

Same could go for maps, gear, quests, pets.

@orionArion most of the files will not be transferrable. It may be good to get some TorchED experience, but TED2 will have different features, but also i believe different files.

Many things created in TE 1 won't be compatible. At the very least you will have to open and re-save them in TE2 for them to work properly. But if you are even remotely interested in modding the game, then you should definitely start learning TE1 now, and familiarize yourself with the basics of the editor. You will be able to hit the ground running when TE2 comes out.
