If the goblin you meant was from diablo3, well I think Runic had it's "own" goblin since torchlight 1, I found a few "spectral boars" that once you killed them (wherever you are) it will spawn a portal to a usually a two level dungeon with bosses, and at least 1 treasure chest in the end.

In beta vids I saw blue goblin archers that shot ice arrows... But maybe in later areas you might find the ones you are looking for :)

I was thinking you was meaning those goblins from D3, I was about to chirp off about the damn sprite holding the golden key.

Those goblins are actually originating from Dungeon Siege II, where that idea was slightly inspired by old Gauntlet games (thieves). Dungeon Siege II goblins are part of more complicated system than in D3, they were called as "???" creatures, which had small chance to appear when some good loot drops. You couldn't kill "???" until later parts of the game (but he was still dropping nice pieces of gear each time he was getting hit), and killing him is part of unlocking secret area.

By the way, i have question on phase beasts - if you kill beast, but don't enter it's portal, will it despawn on dungeon reset? I never risked to see if portal despawns in TL I.

Actually, it all goes back to Golden Axe.

Oh I forgot those. But they were still a deviation from Gauntlet thieves and weren't dropping anything except food and pots (as Golden Axe didn't have much loot elements in it).

Hah! I was going to bring up the DS2 "???" creature as well until I saw your posts. Glad I'm not the only one that remembers these great games. ;)

I don't know... It seems to me that DS2's referense more closely matches Golden Axe, while D3's treasure goblin more closely matches Dungeon Siege 2's "???" creature (especially in the way he teleports away and drops great loot). Diablo 3 "borrowed" all sorts of ideas from other RPGs (Torchlight, Fallout, and Guild Wars just to name a few), so it wouldn't even surprise me to find that they didn't get the Golden Axe reference and just said "Hey! We should totally do that in our game, too!" after looking at DS2 in their quest for games they could "borrow" off of. =P
