They know the release date but are holding it for PAX. I hate that kind of shit. Pretty crappy move Runic.

Hype, man. It's all about dat hype.

They probably planned to announce it at PAX from the very beginning. Conventions and expos are great places to announce your release date, especially one as big as PAX. Not to mention, it's on their turf!
Just imagine it, all those websites on the floor - X-Play, GameTrailers, Gamespot - simultaneously publishing the highly-anticipated release date, some are even airing on TV! You can't pay for that kind of press.

Does that matter though? Because I'd rather at least THEY know when they're set for release than, well, noone.

Doesn't matter to us, but it does matter to the game. You see, they can announce it anytime they want, the actual release date won't change depending on when they announce it.
But announcing it at PAX is a good marketing strategy, as it'll gain more attention that just a regular game showcased at PAX.

If they didn't announce they were going to announce the date at PAX, nobody would say shit.

What's six days? Go have a cup of coffee, Tweak.

its possible that they STILL dont know their own release date yet...maybe PAX is their deadline to come up with one. At what point does a dev "know" a release date??

I think it's kind of lame but meh, whatever.

ThomasJ wrote:I think it is fun and exciting!

Eh, I think it's kind of excessive and unnecessary.

You have a lot of prepurchasers and loyal fans following you intensely you end up prioritizing some game convention that a tiny sliver of people will be at (out of that group). Meh.

Whoa, no need to get angry. It's not that bad

Agreed but they obviously know the release date if they can announce it. How many have prepurchased? Don't the people who've already shown their support with their money deserve something more than a tease like this? Meh.

But while I think it's somewhat lame, it's really not that big a deal. It's somewhat amusing, actually. Here's the release date for our release date!

At least there IS a release date now. :)

Rainwulf,
Two things.
One, we literally settled on a date within the last couples days. So, yes, we will have sat on a date before sharing it for a whole 8-9 days.
Two, we have the greatest 1 person marketing dept. in the industry...but, that said, we have to make the best of every opportunity to market the game. Announcing at PAX gives us the best visibility from rabid fans waiting for the game, game journalists, as well as from new eyes. It's a no brainer. PAX is also 3 blocks away from our office, so it's as close to our home turf as we could get...which makes it special.

And, while perhaps unlikely, the release date they announce on August 31st could be... September 1st! :D

One huge advantage of not shipping a physical product is not having the delay to print CD's and ship boxes to stores once the product is finished.

I suppose when all is said and done, the ultimate release decision belongs to one member of Runic: FALCOR!

I actually think that announcing the release date at PAX is a good move. Runic is not a multi million dollars, hundreds (if not thousands) of employees company that can waste so much money on publicity just to make it know that "We made a new game! You are so much gonna like it! Buy buy buy buy buy!" on every kind of media...
