Is it really just a gimmick, or does it have a place? The same question goes for the Inferior Boots that one could also select as a reward from the same quest.

haha, no it's one of the 3 useless items that this guy gives you, don't worry though, you'll get the chance to get that son of a bitch back for screwing you over like that.
