CHARACTER RECOVERY INSTRUCTIONS!

Postby travisbaldree » Sun Sep 23, 2012 3:08 am

If you get in a state where your character is corrupted or not loading at the main menu, we store backups of these!
Here are the instructions for RESTORING your backed-up character in the event that it is somehow destroyed or munged up-

For Steam versions go to -

Documents/My Games/Runic Games/Torchlight 2/Save/7458XXXXXXXXXXXXX

For Non-Steam versions go to -
Documents/My Games/Runic Games/Torchlight 2/Save/

See your player file there? The file should begin with their name, and a long sequence of characters called a GUID.

It should look something like this -
SANTA_{29D2CA6E-309D-4A89-8026-005186CABBB9}.SVB

There should ALSO be a restore file - it should look like this -

santa_{29d2ca6e-309d-4a89-8026-005186cabbb9}.restore

Before you do ANYTHING ELSE!

COPY EVERYTHING OUT OF THIS FOLDER AND SAVE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE! We don't want any accidents!

Now, take the 'broken' SVB file out of the save folder and stick it somewhere else.

Rename the extension on the .restore file so that it is SVB (just like the save file was before)

Run the game again, and your character should be safe and sound.

Well, thanks for the instructions, but this didn´t worked for me at all.

I was level 27. Yesterday i saw my character being level 14.

Then i did that -.svb .restore thing, and my character became... a lvl 15 character! :S

But it doesnt matter anymore! i´ve decided to level it up again (im level 24 now). It was less painful when i realized the game is still fun thanks to randomization, even if you have to level again those lost levels :D .

But yes, indeed it´s a huge issue :x

Would you check and see if there is an additional patch? I'm concerned you still have the rolled-back version.

Also, are you using Steam, or the build from our site?

Character recovery methods did not help in my case, I'm using steam version. Are there any other ways of recovering my character?

Is the .restore file present? If so, please send me the .svb and the .restore file at travis@runicgames.com and I will take a peek.

The instructions at the top of the page should work - just look for your character by name and follow the steps.

The instructions above for restoring your characters worked for me, thanks a lot. I did some extra steps though maybe unnecessary: After renaming the save game and before starting the game I disabled Steam sync. When I ran the game my characters where restored. While in-game I enabled Steam sync again. Now everything works again.
After the first patch I lost my shared stash. After the second patch the game did not want to start anymore. And after the third patch my characters where gone. Glad that is solved at least, I was getting a bit annoyed to say the least.

I've lost my progress too :/
well, it's nothing compared to "Vatticson," but still makes me sad :( lost 1 level only and a few items include my enchantment - restore full health chance :( .. now I'm 43 D'oh. I shouldn't have restarted my PC, it has happened right after the secondary update came out. I'm using steam version and cloud sync was not working for me, the game itself could not load my saved games anymore so I had to rename the restore file.

Cheers

If I send you mine .SVB file, could you please fix it too ? ;) I would appreciate any help.

Edit; I've just noticed, my shared stash is empty also

Thank you I can confirm this works as well.

**EDIT**
Also I lost no progress I'd suggest going into steap and removing sync before loading up the game for the first time as it is all I did extra.

This is actually because the version changed, and it sometimes has to reroll an area in case stuff has altered.

Are you using the Steam version? If so, then it sounds like you aren't patched up to latest -
If you are using the Runic version, that patch isn't quite out yet - it is still finalizing and will be up as soon as it is done-

I haven't logged in since last night and I'm at work right now, so I assume I should be fine once I load TL2 again. With that said... I can't believe i just read a thread were Travis literally had players email their files directly to him t be fixed. Talk about amazing customer support! I tip my hat to you good sir.
