Felt like ranting up a discussion. If you don't like needless complaining and opinions, this thread is not for you.

I understand the Engineer is the tanky one, but I was seriously holding out for the idea that he might be build-able as a mage. I love summoner classes. Usually when I see an Engineer I think "Oh cool, I can summon turrets or bots to mage it up with.", but this just didn't happen. I gave the Construction class a try and noticed the only bot I could summon any time soon would be the heal bot. Wouldn't be so bad, it's pretty useful as a support, I'll just grind it out until I get more skills. Then Spider Mines came along. I was excited about this, considering I loved Spider Mines in SC1 and UT2K4. Worthless. The damage they dealt was just plain awful for how much they cost. I quickly respecced that point. Not even sure I want to continue building this character from what I've seen and what looks to be coming. I just wish the Construction class could have been a magey one. Not asking for it to be redone, it'd be silly to expect it just because I want it. Magey Outlander's pretty fun anywho.

are you kidding me? get some + pet and minion dmg and watch those spider mines wreck havoc im full pet build nothing else and spider mines are my "spam" skill check the tier bonus if ure worried about mana cost

My main is exactly this and it is really fun, loud, and effective. You can't just rely on the bots however and they just lend to a playstyle. My engineer is a mage(focus stacks,+fire %, mana regen etc.) My main damage comes from spidermines spam, which at rank 12 has 1.9s cooldown and still costs around 30 mana(which my mana regenerates faster than I can cast them) but also from Seismic slam and Firebash both do ridiculous amounts of fire dot damage and I really only break them out for champs and bosses which melt accordingly. I've got around 11 points in both bots and can keep a bot out all the time. Sledgebot lasts 3 seconds longer with each point and now lasts up to a minute. I alternate my bot cooldowns and have one out at all times. With somewhere around 200% pet/ minion damage, sledgebot can crit for 7k aoe. Gunbot pierces enemies with 5k damage bullets, spidermines explode for around 3k each. Skulls of Joskin is a great socketable +25% Pet/minion damage in armor, I think ive got 3 on him.

To the contrary, due to force field I believe the engineer is the best pet class. But you cant rely solely on the class summons, put 4 scroll summon spells in your bar and force field them up. Spider mines, the 4 scrolls ummons, turret, the big bot, the slow copter all should benefit from pet plus damage. You can pickup a cannon to build charge for force field. I believe force field works even on your pets summons (he can have 4 spells too).
