Common Questions and Issues!

Postby travisbaldree » Tue Oct 27, 2009 4:00 pm

Some quick answers to a few common questions - we'll keep expanding this

Q) If I buy the game from one site, can I use that key on the download from another site?

A) Nope! Each partner basically has their own DRM and way of doing things, and one key doesn't work on another game.

Q) Wow! The downloads speeds for the Torchlight websites really stink after I purchase the game! What should I do?

A) We're aware of this and are getting a permanent public download setup. This download will also NOT expire, so you won't get stuck asking us for links.

Q) How do I turn on VSYNC?

A) See this thread to enable it - viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1370&p=20025&hilit=vsync#p20025

Q) How do I save the game

A) The game saves whenever you exit or enter a level, and when exiting to menu or closing the application, automatically

Q) I bought from Torchlightgame.com - good lord, the download is slow! What can I do!

A) Here's a new download location for you! http://www.torchlightgame.com/download - additionally, e-junkie will be upgrading the bandwith available for their downloads as well. Hopefully the net effect will be released pressure and download speeds for everybody. You have our apologies for the snail's pace at which you've been downloading.

hey travis, thanks for being quick with replies, and for the whole company for really being on top of things.

can't say how much how awesome it is the past few days all you guys coming into the streams and just straight up chatting with us insane fans :) whether it be answering our eager questions, or just hangin out and chatting about whatever (especially enjoyed when a few of the dev's got excited cause i brought up sports haha)

point is, you guys rock, and your eagerness to be entwined with your fans/community will only help your company/future developments and us fans in the future, and is much appreciated from many people.

edit: isnt there where people usually go "first"? please let us not let this community turn to that :)

Forgive me of my ignorance since I'm both new to Steam and Torchlight but I have one question:

Q) How do you save the game during play? (is there a hotkey?) How do I know when/if its actually saving my progress?

Or leave a level, I believe. It certainly seems to let me start where I left off when I exited the game.

My questions are:

1) How do you sort through piles of loot. The text all clusters together when you CTRL to see them, and I can't find an easy way to get to the bottom of the "stack".

2) Is there a way to turn on vertical sync?

Great idea Travis. Here's a couple of things I'd like to know:

Q) Loot affinity: I know that the monsters (with a few special exceptions) do not scale to the player. However, does the loot scale according to the items/spells that the player seems to prefer? I ask because I've used the ice shock spell nearly exclusively (with a little help from pistols) for purging enemies. I've found what seems to be an inordinate amount of "+ x ice damage' items. Am I just lucky or is the game scaling to give me items based on my skill/usage preference? If this is the case, can we mod it it so that the loot remains flatline/completely random?

Q) imaginary pets: I'm a little confused with these in the manual. Is there an additional subset of pets gained via a skill/quest or some such, or does this simply refer to the creatures like nether imps that can be summoned? Or did I simply miss a category of pet choice at the start of the game?

To take Screenshots:

Shift +F9 to take one.
Stored at C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\runic games\torchlight\

Save game, mods, etc location

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\runic games\torchlight\
Windows Vista: There is a link to it in your Torchlight Install folder automatically put there (Ex: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\torchlight, look for the Application Data shortcut).

Be careful when moving saved game files and shared stash files. The order of saves starts at 0. For example If had 2 different 0.svt char files on different machines and wanted to merge them, you'd want to change one of them to 1.svt

Hi,
First of all. Thank you for an awesome game! I love it!

I wonder the same thing about the loot.. is there an easy way to either filter out or make all items show and not cluster together? It's quite frustrating to have to pick up all the items just to see if there's an unique or rare item in the bottom.

I actually LOVE the loot stacking the way it is! I just made an official judgement on this today and I'm sticking to it! :D I also love the new inventory! It's quick, fast, and I don't have to think! Perfect!

I really don't mind the fact the loot is stacking, but my problem is that the enemies disappear under the piles of loot. If I'm fighting a big group of guys and it starts raining loot, then the loot titles hide the enemies, this makes it really difficult to target them.

EDIT: Another quick problem I had (and this is the only one after a solid 8 hours of playing) is that I gave my dog the fireball level 1 spell, later on I added the fireball 3 spell. Now his second spell slot was empty, so FB3 went there, then when I deleted FB1 they both were gone. I did not delete FB3 from the other slot, but it got deleted for some reason when I deleted FB1.

Out of curiosity, I read about "The Tombs" in the manual, is that something that got pulled, or is it there and I completely missed it? If it matters, I'm not terribly far in (probably only about an hour.)

Also (and maybe this is the wrong thread to ask:) how is damage in the character sheet being calculated for dual wielding? The damage seems to go down for DW, so am I only seeing the damage from one weapon, or does it combine the damage from both, and I'm just taking that big of a penalty?

Other than that, I'm surprised at how intuitive this game. Maybe it has something to do with me having played a few action RPGs before this... but really, the only reason I looked in the manual was 1) To see if the damage listing was explained, and 2) Damn it, someone worked hard on it, so I'm going to read through at least part of it!

*thumbs up*
