Runic Staff! What's your favorite class?

Postby Xander » Mon Sep 14, 2009 10:25 pm

I recall from an interview, possibly from E3, that the team members end up going home and playing the game even after working on it for countless hours. I figured this is mostly for testing purposes, but heck, most staffers probably want to play anyways and have a character they're focusing on.

So I'm calling you out, Runic crew, who is your favorite class and why?

I know, I know, "all the classes are wicked awesome", and they are, but which ones have you guys been really enjoying individually?
(Some feedback on the Alchemist would be pretty cool too :D )

I'm a fan of the Alchemist. Mostly because he's rad.

I play this game way too much at home just for fun. I seriously played for like 3 hours at work today while checking lighting in the levels. And I thought it would only take me 30 minutes. But of course I got a new sword I have never seen before, so I had to go back in and try it out.. for an hour. Then I found a new axe I have never seen before that had electrical and poison dmg on it, so of course I then had to go try that out.. for way too long. However last week I was playing with the alchemist most of the time. So it's pretty even for me, I really don't have a favorite anymore, it just depends on what type of game play I feel like at the moment. They all rock.

How come it's so fun to play your own game? ;)

I think all the classes are great. Gonna roll a vanquisher first though.

I personally feel that, if you're not making a game that you'd want to play, then you're doing it wrong.

Normally I tend to go for ranged classes, but I'm happy to say I honestly have a hard time choosing a favorite...which is my goal, really.
Usually I avoid casters because they're portrayed as a lame-o, robe-wearing, fragile weenies...so we made our caster type rugged and awesome instead :)
I often find melee classes to be too dry and boring (they're generally one of two or three types over and over again), but the Destroyer has a bunch of fun options to tap into and isn't your normal warrior/fighter/knight archetype.

Hopefully people will give each a spin...

The Runic devs are pretty awesome. They don't shun the fanbase like most do and seem to be down to earth like us. Complete awesomeness!

My recent fave class has been the vanquisher. Definitely has some fun ranged abilities.

What helps a lot I think is the randomization that plays such a huge roll in Torchlight. If you say work on a standard shooter and have to play the exact same level 200 times to get everything right, then you'll grow very weary of it after a while. In Torchlight the game and gameplay keeps surprising you even if you are a DEV.

Although I do think they watch the game with other eyes then us. When they spot a bug, they've to fix it, we only have to come here and whine about it! :D

My fav is the Destroyer. He has a great feeling of strength and heft.

Pretty much all games I go for the warrior (Although I liked the necro in D2 the best).

This is all true actually, randomization keeps the game fresh for the devs, the dungeons flow in a way that I don't even recognize rooms that I made right away.

I usually play mages, but lately the vanquisher is my favorite class. Her ricochet arrow tears through the monsters and it's fun to do bank shots. |^)

Sounds very cool, the vanquisher love is slowly changing my opinions on a ranged class in Torchlight.

Agreed! The Alchemist is super hawt and is my avatar boyfriend. Hands off, HamSammy!!! I love it when he summons steampunk-bots to help me paint my toes. Seriously though, he is super fun to play. Power glove, anyone? And his voice makes me melt a little bit. I know, I need an intervention.
