Barrels/urns/crates... I smash them all. Sometimes something really good pops out. Loved doing this in Diablo 2, where they had a lot of stuff to break or 'investigate', like looking under logs in Kurast.

I've always smashed/done everything i can on a level otherwise you never know if you are missing out on something really nice. Of course most of the time it's just junk that comes out but it could just be that 1 barrel you miss that contains a nice little item.

This doesn't apply to the SP as much, as I doubt there's a crafting system, but it would be interesting if different types of containers had different crafting mats in them. Chest would be gold and gear, as normal, but maybe barrels could have liquids/goos you use to make potions or talismans, little casques could have jewels/metalwork you need for making weapons or trinkets, etc.

For the SP though, gotta smash 'em all. Even if it's just to vendor the trash. Income is income, after all.

That'd certainly get me to smash barrels again. I do love crafting...

I smashed everything the first couple of times I went through Diablo 2. But after a while I quit. I think I got tired of filling up with junk and having to go back to town and sell my cheap loot.

When I was playing Fate, I broke everything and then had my dog sell it for me.

I think I'll be a breaker in Torchlight too.

I always broke the barrels and opened everything that could be opened in all the games that had such things. I guess it's just a mild form of OCD or something.

More sad are these we daily see:

I always get that feeling too -- it's like "the one I skip will be the one that would've dropped a Unique."

And I have had it happen enough to legitimize that train of thought as well.

I tried the new DDO last weekend. I broke every barrel or crate I found.

I don't like the breakables in DDO. For some reason, they always seem to lag for me.

In my experiences, quite a bit of revenue and unique items have been generated by smashing everything in the level to bits. In all the Fate and Diablo versions, I simply don't consider a level to be 100% finished if I leave a few stones unturned leaving that small chance that I left a valuable item behind. My Fate characters are like a whirlwind of destruction and really can't help thrashing everything in sight anyway; I'm not sure why some feel it's such a redundant burden to check for treasure that can benefit one greatly. Perhaps there could be different opportunities for events to occur when smashing a crate or barrel in this instance, but I feel that if this sort of action bores someone, then it's quite possible that they aren't true RPG addicts and tire easily with almost anything routine in gaming. Personally, I wouldn't mind having Ale drops in Torchlight similar to Guild Wars where the screen turns to different effects pertaining to the type of alcohol consumed and to have bonuses in some attributes to garner interest in doing so. But, alas, this is probably considered an all-ages game and that sort of representation might pose a problem for some parents even if an option to exclude alcohol was included with a toggle. Games like this are rewarded by initiative and curiosity and I just can't see running through the level just to get through it so I can hurry up and avoid 30% of the next level. That pretty much defies the entire reason for playing a game in the first place.

Diablo's one thing, since there's finite amount of enemies to kill and items to pick up. For something like FATE, though, the game goes on forever. There's always stronger items the next floor down, or in the next quest. And the game just wasn't hard enough for me to scour every last barrel for a new item.

I just started a game a week ago in Fate: The Traitor Soul with a character in Legendary mode and I must say that gold seems much more tight in that version than before. I did the usual fishing before level 1 and got four uniques in a row, but they were low level and not worth much to sell. I'm now down to level 8 in both towns, and due to lack of finding sweet items in the dungeons, I have had to buy quite a bit from the merchants as the foes are at least 15 levels higher than myself. After completing a total of 16 levels in Traitor Soul in the hardest mode (just shy of Hardcore), I have 16k gold to my name which is unheard of normally. So, I've been getting my gold drop modifier a bit higher and hitting every barrel and crate I can find just to try to survive! If you crank up the difficulty in the Fate games, you will find that those barrels are a most welcomed sight!
