Shaders -

Postby travisbaldree » Sat Oct 10, 2009 9:52 am

So, I know we said no shaders.
But, you heard it here first, I added optional support for Vertex Shader 2.0 and up a few weeks ago.
What does that mean?
Well, it means if you had a crummy video card with no shader support, then nothing at all has changed.
However, if you have a video card from anytime in the last 4 or 5 years, things will just run better. You won't have to do anything, it'll just become enabled.
It also helps Netbooks, because even those little Intel GMA things usually have VS 2.0 support.
So, we still don't require shaders. But most of the known world will get a performance boost from them now if they're available.

Sweet! Good news for us with decent machines.

I'm having a hard time visualizing the improvement though, since the game already looks so good.

All I can say is that things like this are great, Please continue to leave the base specs required for this game as low as possible, but continue to add on more funtionality for those of us with highend rigs.

Especially when you guys are doing the MMO.

Thanks for the new info Travis!

Question:

will this make the game look any better or it's a video ram related?

How well does it really run on a typical netbook with a GMA 950 chipset, a 1.6 Ghz Atom CPU and 1 GB RAM? Even non-gaming applications tend to run glacially slow on netbooks compared to even low budget "normal" laptops.

This won't give you any visual improvements whatsoever - this is purely a speed boost.

We've only got a GMA 916 with 64MB of VRAM here ( real stinker ), and it runs ~14-17FPS in moderate areas. I think your machine is a bit better. It's 'playable' on our netbook, although obviously not optimal.

It's mostly a hypothetical question anyway. I don't plan on playing games on my netbook, but of course, I like to push its limits just 'cause I'm a geek. :) It's a HP Mini 2140 with a 950, 1,6 Ghz and 1 GB. I find it slow even for web browsing, and even after removing all the auto-start crap that came with it. It works for working, but I have trouble seeing it to play a modern game well. I'll try it, though, provided the license allows us to run the purchased copy on more than one machine.

Well, if Torchlight or Fate doesn't work (and you can snag the Fate demo for free and test it out for now), you can always check out Demise! That is a great old school dungeon crawler that keeps me happy on my old secondary computer when his big brother is down for repairs/maintenance. :) It's more about stats than graphics, but Demise finally did add some rudimentary 3D display just for visuals.

Great news about the shading enhancements! I'm sure even my old GeForce 6200 will be able to make use of that! :D

Awesome! Not that my GeForce 8800 will need a speed boost when running Torchlight, but it's still nice to have.
