Tool to change difficulty/hardcore/retired mode

Postby Meuh » Thu Nov 05, 2009 5:57 pm

Hello,

Here is a small tool to change difficulty level, activate/deactivate hardcore, retired and dead status for Torchlight's characters.
1) Do a backup of " %appdata%\runic games\torchlight\save" folder (or "%appdata%\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\save" with Windows Vista/7)
2) Install/update Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or greater.
3) unzip the zip anywhere.
4) Launch Torchlight Util.exe, Menu file->load, select the Torchlight's savefile corresponding to your character (1.svt, 2.svt, etc... The number depends of character's creation order) in "%appdata%\runic games\torchlight\save" folder (or "%appdata%\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\save" with Windows Vista/7 ? )
5) Modify difficulty and/or modes (or load another .svt file if you selected the wrong character)
6) Click on Save.

Some users reported problem with the zip archive, so here is the unzipped exe file (without readme, just copy/paste this topic if you want one)
Alternative link : http://paulaimik.alwaysdata.net/torchlight/Torchlight_Util_1_0.exe

PS : Characters will NOT be tagged as cheater because of this tool.

I may sound stupid but does this mean we can use this tool to resurrect dead characters on hardcore mode?

Yes, you can resurrect hc character (for example to retrieve his stuff for a new char, or whatever you want), or make him be a (living) softcore char.

Oh I see.. but imo it could be use for cheating like playing hc and resurrect and continue playing.. :? still i think some people have different opinion so I'm not gonna comment further xD

PS: Actually I was referring to ethics but oh well.. in the sense of hardcore its like you are suppose to be dead for eternity so being able to revive is like cheating without cheating if you know what i mean lolz.. no offense intended tho.. just stating my opinion.. ;)

Anyway it was not really designed to be a trainer, but was made for people that did "mistakes" at character creation (or used retirement feature by accident), and then changed their mind if they find the game too easy/hard after some levels.

You unzip it anywhere, then you select a Torchlight's save file (.svt) in %appdata%\runic games\torchlight\save (opened by default).

With Windows Vista/7 the folder might be %appdata%\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\save but i'm not sure (i have only XP)

edit: updated 1st post to make it more clear

cool program

you should have the open dialog box default open to
%appdata%\runic games\torchlight\save
instead of the documents folder

Sounds like the problem several ppl are having is that you don't have an Unzip program, like 7zip.

Hello Meuh,
First of all I love your tool, after 15 hours in the game I managed to retire my character by a mistake. (That’s a big mistake!)
Sadly there seems to be a problem with the zip file on your link. When opening the zip file with explorer in Windows Vista, I get the following message: The Compressed (Zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted. I have tried on other computers with difrent Windows OS, with the same result.
I’m able to open the zip file with winrar and 7zip, and extract. But the zip file contains the following file: Torchlight_Util_1_0.
I have extracted the file, and renamed it to Torchlight_Util_1_0.exe. But it’s still not working.

Can you post the tool one more time?

This is brilliant! I just bought the game and started on Normal mode to get my bearings, now I can ratchet up the difficulty as I see fit and enjoy my characters even more! Thanks so much!
