Diablo 2 / WoW Killer?

Postby proboho » Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:41 am

Since TL2 won't have a dedicated closed server for supporting an economy and trading, though the itemization in the game seems to be all for it, am I right to assume that the Torchlight MMO will basically be a battle.net and persistent world hybrid? Something simple that will foster a trading economy and keep out hackers, but won't rely heavily on the grind of classic MMOs? My reasoning for this assumption is that:

A) TL MMO will be f2p, this reminds me of League of Legends and instantly suggests accessibility.
B) It'll most likely be an ARPG, so it wouldn't fit into the endless XP grind formula of most MMO's.
C) The itemization seen so far (if we're considering TL1 and TL2 as testing beds for the MMO) is random and seemingly geared towards the end goal of making you a demi-god rather than becoming simply balanced enough to get to the end-game.

Torchlight 2 will kill Diablo III, sooner or later.

World of Warcraft, in the other hand, will die to Guild Wars 2.

I find pleasantly ironic both RunicGames and ArenaNet were created by former Blizzard employees :D.

It will be like Torchlight and Torchlight II, only with a large persistent world and lots of instances, many of which will probably come from maps you can buy and customize. It won't be a WoW killer because it's a totally, completely different kind of game. There's literally zero comparison. It's not about making you a demi-god. There is no 'end goal'.
The point of a good action/rpg is the journey, not the destination. It's all about finding loot and experimenting with different kinds of builds. For some people it might be all about being a demi-god. Maybe if you're into pvp or just enjoy feeling uber powerful. For most folks who play them, thought, it's about having fun.

What World of Warcraft and Torchlight in MMO format have to do with each other is beyond me. They're completely different styles of MMO.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall,
with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.

WoW dying to guild wars is a joke the gameplay is so different and the end game is also. WoW started dying 2 years ago when people decided they are not adding any decent new features worth the monthly subscription. in the last year they have lost over 2 million players, the year before that 600,000(a little over) and this year i predict another million +. Even with all that loss WoW will out populate GW by millions.

There is no killing WoW.

You cannot kill what is already dead...

Like a zombie that has lost it's head, but refuses to fall down. It just shambles around aimlessly until it withers away to nothing.

All my friends already stopped playing WoW, I wasn't really into WoW anyway. But if there'd ever be a Torchlight MMO I'd definitely give it a shot.

According to some recent polls I've read, WoW still has more active players than the other top nine MMOs combined. GW2 will be popular, but I don't think it will eclipse WoW in numbers.

Don't hold your breath on that one.

Here's a small list of games fated to kill WoW.

    Everquest 2
    Rift
    Tera
    Guild Wars
    LotRO
    Age of Conan
    Aion
    Tabula Rasa
    TOR
    Warhammer Online
    PWO
    Secret World
    Guild Wars 2
    Neverwinter
Items in yellow are new additions.
Making a to-do list is on my to-do list.

You are crazy... you know that right? Guild Wars 1 didn't DENT the WoW crowd. Nothing has. Guild Wars 2 won't fare any better. Also, Diablo III won't "die" to Torchlight 2. Both are going to be played. Same with Path of Exile. People will play them all because that's what kind of gamers play dungeon crawl action RPGs. We will play till we finish the game and get as far as we decide we want to, then we will move on and wait for the previous game to get an expansion. Simple as that.

Everquest 2

Actually, it wasn't. In fact, SOE (especially the EQ2 team) was extremely dismissive of WoW. Then it came out and they slapped their foreheads and went "Shit, that's what we did wrong!" and began to make numerous quality of life changes, because they realized to even have any chance of competing they'd need to steer away from the grind/work model of EQ1.

I'll never forgive them for ruining Everquest with the Buried Sea expansion and every expansion after it.

Everquest 2 is just a horrible game in every way, shape and form.

As with any hit MMO it can only kill itself, which it is doing rather efficiently. But for me Wow lost its appeal after the remaining few original devs went to work on Titan.

Right now Torchlight 2 is like wow rehab for me. It plays in many ways like wow and offers a LOT of fun. I of course still miss wow in it's prime, miss the characters I worked so hard to customize and tweak and by far was one of the best games that existed. How could it not be, it had a huge gathering of awesome devs and lots of excellent people working under one roof. That is why Wow even in it's current MOP zoo state is still a good/decent game in comparison to other games as it is depending fully on the excellent backbone that years of development by experts had hand crafted. However current, and imo very stuck up, devs are knocking out that foundation and "remodeling" the game into something totally different.

Today I'd much rather give my money to people who deserve it, aka runic games, than people who insult others, fanboi their own threads and game, and have tons of actual fanbois who will kiss the earth that they walk on. The only good aspects of the game remaining were created by the very same people who have left to make other excellent games.

I never wondered why Torchlight 2 had many wow aspects (Ie their intro looks like shattrath) because I knew they are a big part of the talent that left blizzard to create their own gems.

As for the topic at hand, a TL mmo, I would definitely buy it and also hope they make a druid like class. Wow turned into world of pvp for me and while it was fun to troll trolls and fanbois that's not a game. I miss a game with story, with content, and most of all genuine fun. So again, if TL makes an MMO I'm definitely signing on. I trust their taste, judgement and of course their ability to create something kickass.

Honestly do not think anything will kill WoW. It has wayyyy to many players and they are all addicts. I can see WoW going strong for another 5+ years.
But if runic did come out with a TorchLight MMO i would sooooo be there.

Can we just stop doing the whole '*insert game here* killer?' thing? It's a stupid phrase. People can like more than one thing and it just makes you sound like a hater.

Completely agree with Zidders on this one. Many times we talk about game killers and in reality, most games do not have the ability to kill another game in of itself. I have heard the phrase, "WoW Killer" more times than I can possibly fathom and I do not think WoW is by any means, dead. I don't even think Travis would like anyone to call TL2 a "D3 killer". IMHO, it just sounds hateful and there could be better ways to discuss games without extreme fanboyism. I think it is fine that people jump from game to game, but no game alone kills another game.
