Looking at these ideas, I think that Gunslinger is the best and Engineer is the second best. Both have great potential for flavor and mechanics. Especially if you can get a duster to go with the hat.

The Professional. He does his job.

Skill Sets:

Hitman: The professional uses the shadows, disguises or distractions to get close to the target, and finishes them quickly with the switchblade, piano wire or simply using his bare hands to snap the foes neck.

The Sniper: The professional takes out the target with a high powered rifle. He confuses the enemy by setting up decoys (hats on sticks) in multiple locations.

The Cleaner: The professional uses smoke bombs, knockout gas and blind grenades accompanied with two silenced pistols to massacre groups of enemies using awesome gun fu skills. The Cleaner is so named because of the huge mess they leave in their wake.

I always enjoyed the concept (yet over played) and story Death Knights (in my own opinion).

Just to toss an idea into the ol' arena of death: how about there being no classes in the proposed MMO, just a few races (to begin with) and an amazing number of skill sets that can provide an amazing number of open-ended builds?

Why would I suggest this? Life comes with so few definite guides, and is pretty much an extended journey through multiple opportunities and on-going choices. And that, in part, is what makes life so appealing - the potential to make anything of yourself that you wish.

Shouldn't the least enabling game follow a similar pattern?

As I said, it's just an idea I'm floating into the thread.

The Pacifist

Avoids killing at all costs. Avoids fighting whenever possible.

Strategic Retreat
The Pacifist and all nearby friendly players gain increased movement speed, at the price of only being able to move out of combat, and not into it.

Pickpocket
Allows the player to remove a quest item from a boss monster, whom he would normally have to slay.

Entangle
Roots target enemy/enemies in place, allowing the player to progress deeper into the dungeon.

Psychic Reasoning
The Pacifist attempts to reason with a monster, arguing that he is not a threat to it.
Threat towards the player is reduced. This could be a passive or active ability.

Pacify
Being in the presence of the Pacifist can make even the most devout warrior reconsider his ways.
This could be an aura which reduces enemy damage, or an active ability which disarms the enemy.

Edit: More skills

Golden Gloves
Delivers a knockout attack to the enemy, rendering it unconscious. Boss monsters are immune to this effect.

Sweep Kick
Knocks a monster off its feet/legs/tentacles (hehe), rendering it unable to move for (+x time per level) seconds.

Shatter
Breaks target enemy's weapon, rendering monsters unable to use said weapon, and players disarmed for x seconds.

Guard Impact (idea stolen from Soul Series fighting games, suggest name change)
With precise timing, the Pacifist can deliver an active parry, sending target enemy into a stunned state for a short time.

Demoralizing Slap
The player delivers an open-handed slap to target enemy.
This effect causes no damage, but reduces enemy damage for a short time.

Edit #2: Balance issues
The Pacifist is severely distraught at the sight of death, be it by the hand of his comrades or his foes.
Each monster death in the presence of the Pacifist reduces his overall effectiveness.
Eventually, he will become so disgusted that he leaves the party.

However, each player death increases his resolve.
"I know there is a conscience hidden somewhere in the minds of these beasts!"

I tend to favor Peri's classless system with skill sets. Sure, it's harder to balance but there have been games that have used this system that have been pretty successful. The best example of a classless system has been Asherons call.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asheron's_Call
"The player initially allocates a limited number of attribute points (such as 'Strength', 'Coordination', and 'Quickness') and selects skills (such as 'Unarmed Combat', 'War Magic' and 'Melee Defense') for the character, with those base skills starting at a level determined by the character's attributes. Unlike many other games of the genre characters are not locked into a specific class, and can even reallocate previously selected skills to acquire other skills later in the game.

Gameplay involves earning experience points through a variety of activities, including engaging and defeating monsters in combat, fulfilling quests, and interacting with NPCs. Those earned experience points can then be invested to improve the character's abilities by spending it on attributes or skills. Additional skill points are awarded after the character reaches certain levels, and these skill points can then be used to acquire a new skill. In addition to earning experience, questing and combat yields 'loot', such as armor, weapons, health potions, and spell scrolls. Many types of loot can be improved or imbued with special spells and effects via Asheron's Call's 'tinkering' crafting system.
It offers "episodic narrative content, period new quests, and events that visibly affect the entire world.

Many elements of Asheron's Call are radically different from most other MMORPGs. For example, Asheron's Call does not divide its world into different level zones. While some areas are much more dangerous to players than others, there is nonetheless a mix of different creatures types that creates much more unpredictability than is present in other games. Another key difference is that Asheron's Call does not use character level as the major determinant in the outcome of a combat. Level simply determines what skills are available, and it is the skills and equipment of players and creatures that determine the outcome. Whereas in many games a player will be able to move a cursor over an opponent and instantly know from their level whether they will be successful in combat, in Asheron's Call a character might be able to defeat much higher level foes or lose to much lower level ones, again depending upon one's skill choices and equipment.

As with the absence of specific level zones, this creates a higher degree of unpredicatability than in most games of this type."

Lots of games don't use classes. Eve online, Champions online, DC universe, City of Heroes, all use a similar system. I actually prefer it. It allows you to tailor your character to your particular style of play and skills.

I've had this idea before way back when and I hope no one remembers :P.

Tempest Knight (AKA Tempest Mage or simply Tempest, shortened to temp)

While attempting to understand the nature of the ember, the tempest society, a forgotten sect of the embermage have unlocked more horror than they could have imagined. A horrible experiment occurred, timed correctly with the rising of a great evil. All of the members of the tempest society were sucked into another dimension never to be heard from again. To avoid panic, scrutiny, and most importantly, investigation, the empire has simply dismissed that the tempest society has never existed at all.

The dimension was harsh and unforgiving, given only time, darkness, enemy eyes among them, they had no choice. To survive, they had to break the covenants they held restricted, and delved deep into the secrets of the ember; cracks of lightning were first to come, allowing the magi to create fires to help them see into the harsh new world; they developed methods to hasten their own speed and slow their opponents that they may escape their predators; finally they found ways to harness the crystals for potent use, ripping their enemies apart instead of simply running in fear of them. This was progress, and though they were visibly corrupted by the ember to do so, it was another victory for life.

The dying cry of a beast named Ordrak deep within the mines of a boomtown has created rifts in time across the land. One of these places was within the now derelict towers belonging to the tempest society. Flung open from their grim prison in a fate akin to hell; the tempest society had to work to survive and gained truer understandings of the nature of ember than they though possible before.

Though welcomed back into the very empire that at one time dismissed them, they were viewed as outsiders. The dead, or at least, those that should have been. Half of the tempests cleaved from the empire, insulted and demanding reparations and working toward revenge. However, and oddly, the more ember-corrupt sided with the empire to foster a new school into tempestry.

Spirit Walker: A Class that can toggle between physical and spirit form. In physical form it can deal magic damage like any other Mage. In spirit form, it leaves the physical body and roams as a spirit for a limited time, becoming invisible at will, possess enemies and even re-animate statutes at a higher level. But if the physical body, which cannot move in his spirit-form, is damaged while in this form, the Spirit-Walker will also die.

Major Skills:

Astral Projection: Leaves physical body behind for a while to roam in spirit form. Becomes immune to phyical attacks and very vulnerable to magic attacks.

Soul Replace: While in spirit form, takes over an enemy.

Spirit Walker: Renders own-self invisible for a short time and increases movement speed and evasion.

Impostor: A Class that can copy or mimic any other class by looks, skills and even stat distribution for a limited time. Although the mime usually has the lowest stat amongst any other class, it makes up for it with its copying ability. An impostor can even go as far as to mimic one's name for a short while making him nearly indistinguishable. The only things it cannot copy are experience, gears and level.

Major Skills:

Doppelganger: Tranforms one's own looks and name into the enemy it concentrates on. When used against some monsters, other monsters won't recognize the impostor and won't attack him until they are attacked.

Mirror Form: Copies class, skills and stat distributions. The higher the level of this skills the more skills one can copy.

Skill Steal: Steals the last skill used on the impostor by the enemy. Unlike skills learned by Mirror Form, The stolen skill stays forever in a specialized skill slot, until it is replaced with a new skill upon using the Skill Steal again.

Name of the class: Silencer

Appearance: Hunchbacked individual, but athletic. Choice of armor would be light or cloth. His face is partially shown (only the lower jaw), while the upper part of the face is concealed with a mask. Wears hoods. For weapons, he uses curved ritualistic knives.

Attributes and abilities: Silencer is a versatile class, dealing with magic as well as with dexterity. His main focus is on crowd-controlling his foes, moving in for the kill when they stack enough of debuffs on them. As a survivability mechanism they use smoke bombs with various negative effects for the assailant, as well as short-lived illusions.

Skill trees:

Pantomime: Due to his mouth being sewn together, the Silencer can only conjure magic through special seal he draws in air (offensive magic), ground (defensive magic) or water (distraction magic). Featured ability - "Plainswalker's Essence" (whenever Silencer uses elemental magic by drawing seals he has a small chance of gaining the attributes of a Plainswalker (Air - Silencer becomes like the wind, able to move swiftly and stealthily, and gains Dexterity for every enemy with air-caused condition in his vicinity; Earth - Silencer fortifies his defenses, increasing his armor and elemental resistances while decreasing his movement speed, and gains Vitality for any foes with earth-caused condition in his vicinity; Water - Silencer's body becomes liquid, being able to dodge attacks with great efficiency as well as dish out some hefty damage; unlike the previous two essences, this one does not increase your attributes, but instead it has the ability to create a clone of yourself on every three dodges of yourself. The clones deal half your damage, take double the damage from the foes and upon their expiration have a chance to grab one enemy and pull it to the elemental realm.)

Semiotics: After taking the Oath of Silence, the Tanaresh Sect sears the Mark onto Silencer's left palm with highly sophisticated magic. It allows Silencer to invoke different states onto his adversaries, either by placing his palm onto them or by influencing them from afar. Featured ability - "Crimson Bindings" (Silencer projects his life force out of his marked palm, heavily damaging his foe and stunning him at the cost of 3/4 of his HP.)

Assassination: The art of making deadly traps, weapon coatings and hit-and-run warfare. It allows silencer to enhance his weapons with debilitating venom, carve his opponents in a specific way or weaken them (or even kill them if they are weakened already) with an assortment of deadly devices. Featured ability - "The Last Dance" (1st stage - Silencer begins rotating at his speed, moving freely around the battlefield and damaging his opponents in area around him; 2nd stage - Silencer jumps high into the air, spraying all below him with with "Tears of Xan'Atos" which make his foes bloat up and explode if they are below half HP; 3rd stage - Silencer returns to the ground with incredible force, knocking back enemies in 2m radius and regenerating health based on the number of surviving "Tears of Xan'Atos" infectees. Note that this ability lasts for about 2-3 seconds in 1st stage, with 2nd and 3rd stages having 1.5 second duration.)
