So about this planned MMO in the future...

Postby Waffletime » Thu May 31, 2012 3:48 pm

Figured this would be the best place for it, anyway;

Watched this Interview with Totalbiscuit today to get my Torchlight 2 fix, and it was mentioned in passing that it was planned to be free to play. This immediately nabbed my interests as the free to play route is very nice as I'm not a big fan of subscription services. Given the Interview is a year old and the MMO is still in development if it's being worked on at all at the moment. Is there any where to get some more up to date information on this?

Video for those interested;

It's "in development" in the sense that TL (and now TL2) are considered steps on the road to the MMO (which was the planned product from the beginning).

However, in terms of actual production, they haven't started on it and haven't made any definite plans regarding it. Their plans as of right now are 1) finish TL2, 2) finish Mac version of TL2. What they do next, whether it's the MMO or another TL game or making another IP entirely, is not known right now.

It's coming in the future, but they may take a short break to do something different before jumping into it after Torchlight 2 releases. A lot of the feedback from TL2 will be vital to planning the MMO.

MMO doesn't imply WoW-style or Everquest-Style. Torchlight MMO never was intended to become WoW/EQ-style

Nothing phrasing it better than this very old FAQ answer:

Spoiler: show
A common misconception these days is that the term MMO represents games with the playing style that WoW uses (slower action, longer battles with fewer enemies, some form of raids, etc). The Torchlight MMO will have the same fast-paced playing style that the single player game has, with the addition of multi-player gameplay, PvP, large shared areas, Guilds, crafting, and the other staples of online RPGS. In other words, think of the Torchlight MMO as a figurative upgrade to the game style already present in the single player game.

MMO simply means Massive Multiplayer Online.

Just as Omnifas stated and the FAQ snippet from the devs, expect the Torchlight MMO to basically play like Torchlight but just simply support a massive amount of people online on the same game session at the same time.

I don't see why people have this mental block that MMO means = WoW

You want to know another MMO that is an ARPG, Ragnarok Online...basically Torchlight MMO will be basically like that.

I don't think it's so much any kind of "mental block" as the simple, demonstrable truth that WoW broadened the MMO audience so dramatically that for many it's their first, and possibly only, frame of reference. For hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of gamers WoW defines the MMO genre because it was their introduction to it.
If disgruntled Diablo 3 players come to Torchlight expecting a Diablo game, they're likely to be equally disappointed. If they come to Torchlight just looking for a good game, they may find themselves a home.
