Why does TorchED connect to the internet?

Postby nunix » Tue Mar 23, 2010 1:15 pm

My AV/firewall software popped up a message that editor.exe was connecting to the internet, and I'm curious as to why. Is this some kind of verification, or what? What information is being transmitted, and why?

well, lets take a few possible reasons:

1) they are trying to steal your information
2) they are having it check for updates that fix problems
3) its alive and is calling upon an army of torchED controlled computers
4) its all in your head and you are crazy

now, what answer do you think is the most likely? 0_0

honestly, every program checks online these days 0_0 why would something as powerfull as torchED not? >_>

There's a "Check for updates" in the menu, and no place to set TorchED options (i.e. a checkbox as to whether or not I want it to check for updates); additionally, "Check for updates" simply opens a browser window to torchlightgame.com, it's not even pinging to check a version number against a file somewhere. And considering that it's an editor, it's pretty odd it'd be calling home for serial key verification or the like. It might just be transmitting system information, I don't know.

It's pretty unlikely it's some kind of nefarious reason! Mostly I'm just curious as to what it's doing, since it didn't tell me. Which is why I asked. Because.. that's how you get answers to things. Or how adults do, anyway. Knowing what information is being sent to or from your computer is a pretty basic safety thing nowadays, as well.

EDIT: it's really not a big deal, I just thought it was odd since the check-for-updates just sends you to the webpage, so.. got curious as to what was happening. =P

then download a network sniffer and see what its sending where?

who knows, maybe its ALIVE! and its going to take over THE WORLD!
(note: in case this happens, let me be the first to submit to our new torchED overlord! :D)

Are you sure it was a "Connect to Internet" or was it a "Needs to access system files(includes dll files, etc)"?
What level of detection is your firewall set at? The highest level on my firewall pops up a message for almost everything I do.
Did you download it from the link Gbrown posted in this section?
