You'll be happy to know those skill fx are not even close to final, in fact they look like reused particles from TL1 just so they can get a trailer ready.
I'm sure some full-daylight footage will make it's way out. We've got some nice and gloomy outdoor regions as well that will be up at Gamescom. This footage is actually already getting old - lots of new stuff going in all the time. None of the skill fx in this footage really resemble how they will look in the end ( or even how they look right now ). We'll be focusing on making them look powerful without turning the screen white with particle overdraw.

It was great to read the red part :D

That images look like its right outside torchlight.

About the openness factor if the zone is the Esterian Steppes which judging from the name is mountainous. Mountain passes can't really be "open" in terms of walkable space.

If
http://www.runicgamesfansite.com/attach ... 1894&stc=1

is any depiction of how that overworld would look, it would probably be more open. Can only hope.

How is it linear!? How can you make that up from the gameplay video?
I couldn`t.
How is it nowhere near diablo 2, when it comes to random open world generation?
Seriously the world looks very lush and vibrant and the weather system adds to the atmosphere. Aswell as the day and night cycle.

he's saying its linear because the players follow a path or trail through the land, but in D2 you could go off the trail and skip entire areas if you wanted

but I agree, its a pre alpha video
its way too early to judge the openness of the world by that video
we don't even know how big the world is or how much of it they have completed
you cannot judge the openness of the final game by that video

I also complained about the skill effects (before Travis posted a comment) so I'll wait and see how it all turns out

regarding the familiar area, he means
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_dacPRA7p4#t=1m07s

see the bridge and the platform area in almost exactly the same place ?

Well if the open world would be limited to predefined paths, then i would be really sad. But this trailer was probably made before they really started working things out. Lets just hope we do get a large scale open world where you can drift far off the actual path and explore.

The areas shown in the video are linear. We have different types of outdoor areas, most of this was filmed in what we call "Passes". These passes are outdoor areas that connect different zones, and are meant to be quick, tighter, and more focused gameplay experiences that break up the feel between the larger areas, and are usually heavily themed for look and feel. There are only a few passes in each area. 80% of the outdoors are huge randomized areas. They are all very open, and much, much larger than the biggest dungeon we had in Torchlight.

Awesome information! i have already been convinced before, that the final areas will be much bigger, than what we have seen so far in the video. But this is good info to calm all the "nervous" people down. Hooray. Thank you.

Sounds a bit like Mythos was towards the end, when the game really started to develop. I think it will work perfectly.

If it one giant world, it would be an MMO. They have the right idea to go with connected areas in a Co-op.

Now "that" i like! I was very worried there at first. My heart just went back to a normal beatrate. So will those crazy squeezed tight passes, have a higher difficulty in some way?

Huh?

Comparing Mythos to Torchlight, the animations in Torchlight had a much greater sense of fluidity.
Could you post a video example and deconstruct it from there, if it's not too much trouble?

I would also like to see more done with animations. Especialy mob death animations. A frozen enemy that gets it`s health depleted, before the ice starts to melt shatters into multiple blocks of ice. Enemies falling apart when getting chopped in two pieces. Monsters that just fall slowly on their knees and smash into the ground. Enemies that take their last breath, while beeing burnt alive to a crisp. Some scripted decapitations would be cool, to beef up death animations. Oh and same for player models! :D Nothing that involves physix.

have options to reduce the amount of color spray, weather effects and everything else (and for those that enjoy it, have an option to enhance all effects individually)
I am just trying to be fair, if what I say hurts you, you probably need to seriously evaluate what I said, break it down and realize I am not trying to insult you, Just explain things you probably didn't realize.

I have just watched the trailer for TL2 (yeah yeah I'm late to the party and all lol). I have to say that I am super excited! Especially with the knowledge that the outdoor areas are bigger than the largest dungeons they had in TL1! For an alpha build this is looking very good already.

Also, I really dig the spiders that climb down from the ceiling on their silk strings, very cool. Did anyone else find the crypt-like tileset with all the candles absolutly awesome?!

Millions of candles spread around this altar like pedestral. When i saw this perfect setting with the surrounding, it was eerie and shrouded in darkness even though everything was lit up. Hard to explain. I just totally fell in love with the art an graphics at that point. Anyone else notice when the party walked down those stairs, the streched shadows they casted to the ground. Loooked really cool. I really hope they use some advanced shadow and lightning for the game. Yep the candle dungeon thing blew my mind!

While there were some flaws with the animations and even some skills reguarding the stair battles, it wasn't a gamebreaker, at least not for me so I'm not too upset about it. And who knows they have probably addressed the whole stair battle issues already. If not it's most likely on their to do list :)
