What is Mod for?

Postby DenoumenT » Wed Sep 08, 2010 4:34 am

I'm a newbie here and i find this game awesome!

I've just discovered this site lately because my officemate just told me to try this game.
And it's really cool 8-)

Just got a problem, as i read the threads, i noticed the word "mod" , and then i looked for it from another thread.

I just wanna know what is it really for?

Thanks! :D

Mods are modifications that people have made to the game. There are custom character classes, skills, items, levels, game mechanics, skins, etc., etc., etc. The best way to understand what this means would be to look through the Mod Showcase forum and see some of the work that people have done.

While using mods is fun, I would suggest playing through the game the first time without using them, that way, you get a feel for the gameplay and get a better idea as to exactly what mods do what and the effect they might have on gameplay.

I'd even recommend playing through the game a couple of times, with different classes, before you start installing mods. Until you've played through the game at least once, you really won't even know what kind of mods you'll be interested in.

I've played since release and still only use one mod: the respec potion mod from Runicgames. :) There are some mods that look really good, but in the end I prefer the game in its vanilla state, for better or worse. My main reason is that it makes my own playing experiences with different builds and classes more comparable. Really just a personal preference thing.

That's a good point. My biggest complaint from my own modding experience is that it's really hard to make mods that are balanced with the rest of the game (unless you're just changing aesthetics). It would be really nice to be able to easily calculate things like skill damage, and have them show up clearly in the UI.

I was strictly against mods of any kind for many years, and Morrowind was the first game I started using them with. Simply because they added, in my opinion, vital things to the game; things that should have been there in the first place. But I have always tried to keep the number of mods installed as low as possible. With Torchlight... it has got out of hands: I currently have 35 mods installed, and the number will surely grow. 8-)
