If you go by the Mythos/Torchlight MMO model, Diablo 2 WAS an MMO, except instead of a town where you talked to people and partied up, it was the battle.net chat. Imagine you took all those people in bnet chat, and put them in Lut Gholein, and then when you left the city gates it was instanced for you and your party. The rest of the game and gameplay mechanics would remain unchanged.

I don't want to play in a salad overworld. The croutons are always too crunchy so when you try to stab them with your fork they explode and go shooting off so you can't find them again. It's annoying. The salad is usually overflowing with dressing too. I'm not going to play this game unless we get less dressing.

If your simply referring to the nature of people criticizing other people's performance in online games in general, that would basically count you out of playing any multiplayer game ever, not just MMO's. right?

This is all true. Notice how Diablo and Mythos didn't have any healers? Also, in a game where most things die in a couple hits and you move on to the next crowd, DPS isn't that important.

indelible wrote:I think that the MMO genre is a confusing genre because it's an emerging genre that is evolving very quickly. Up until very recently, the only real MMOs were RPGs, so the term MMORPG and MMO have become synonymous, even though that's a glaring mistake on behalf of gamers. The truth of the matter is that the "WoW formula" is but one formula within a larger genre; WoW is a typical MMORPG, but it is not the only way an MMOG can work. Sadly, as developers and publishers release new titles that cover different subgenres of the MMOG - such as MMOFPSs, MMOSIMs, MMORTSs, MMOARPGs etc etc - people are having trouble figuring out what exactly a game has to do to be an "MMO" because the things that people think make MMORPGs Massively Multiplayer aren't always being applied to other titles that cover these other subgenres.
Eventually I'm sure we'll settle on the idea of what a game has to do to be considered an MMO, once game developers stop captialising on the confusion and selling games that aren't MMOs as MMOs. Global Agenda - for example - was not an MMO, despite what Hi-Rez may try to claim, and Hi-Rez got it in the neck for selling the game as an MMO in the first place, to such an extent that they're now going back an adding in content to make it an MMO.
