I wouldn't call this a mod because it not part of org game. How about an add on?

I haven't played Torchlight in a couple of months now, so for me this "mod" would be more of a "resurrection"!

Actually, it IS a mod. He's not only modifying the game itself, in order to change the abilities and powers about, but he's adding new content. This is what game modification is all about. It can also be considered an add-on, but the preferred nomeclature is mod. Technically, what used to be referred to as 'add-ons', small little game changes, usually made by the games original developer, is now generally referred to as 'DLC'. While some DLC is free, generally DLC means additional content that can be bought. So far, 'Expansions' are still that, tho i'm sure at some point some developer is going to start making expansions that are half the size they should be, charge as much for it as they would charge for a full sized expansion, and call it DLC. It seems like the gradual change in terms that are used to refer to all this stuff is mostly an effort to make games smaller in scope, while costing the same money, and then charging more for additional content. You end up paying twice or three times as much for a game as you would have.

Borderlands is a perfect example. The game came out at $50, and then charged $10 per 'DLC'. So you ended up paying $90. Then, the game of the year edition comes out....for $50. The fact is, those who paid $90 for the game ($50, plus the DLC) go screwed, because the original game WITHOUT the DLC was NOT worth $50. It wasn't until all the DLC was added that it was really a full game. The GoTY edition is worth the $50. It just sucks that people got screwed out of $60...because the game without the DLC was really only a $30 game, at best.

There's a lot of other examples I could give of the game industries trend towards charging more for less, but then this would just turn into a flame thread, and i've already veered off topic enough as it is.

Hey guys,

Another project I worked on in 2010 finally got announced, so I can give yet another excuse for not getting this mod done. :P In addition to Call of Duty: Black Ops, I also worked on Halo Reach last year, so as you can imagine it was a very very very very busy year.

If you are curious I updated my port with some of the work from this year: http://wharris.wordpress.com

Now I'm completely swamped again, a friend and I started up a little mobile iPhone/iPad game company to make old school adventure games like the old Sierra "Quest" games and Lucasarts games. In addition to that I'm also attending an art school full-time to learn the 2D / conceptual side of the biz. So, I honestly don't know when I am going to be able to finish this mod and it is unfortunately looking highly unlikely I will get it done before Torchlight 2. I apologize about the unbelievably long wait and the lack of results but real life stuff just kept getting in the way over and over.

So that leaves me with two options right now:

1) If someone wants to take a shot at taking the project over, I can give the mod files I have away if anyone wants to try to finish it

2) If no one steps up I will hold onto them and if I ever get some free time to finish it I'll give it a shot. (probably after Torchlight 2 comes out and our iPhone game is out)

So, let me know if any of you have any interest in taking it over or tinkering with it and sorry to all the folks who were excited about it. I was super excited about it as well, but unfortunately my professional work is too time consuming for me to finish a for-fun side project like this.

Hakuna matata, Sly. Personally, it's been fun to see the progress that you DID make with it, i'm fascinated with art and game design, as well...I love seeing the creative process in action, it helps inspire my own creative processes. The real world comes first-even when that real world involves making fantasy worlds for others to play in. Grats on the Call of Duty/Halo:Reach stuff. Gotta be nice to have a few feathers like that in your cap.

Focus on what's important, please never stop being creative. With people like you working in the games industry, it just means that there's an even better chance that the next game we might pick up might be something you worked on and will have benefitted from having someone so skilled and creative.

Mods die, that's a part of the scene, from what i've seen. Rarely do I see it caused people to turn away from modding. If anything, it often tends to galvanize modders into taking an idea and building on it. For now (and I know some folks here are going to kill me for it) i'd say hold on to the little fellow. With the release of Torchlight II still on the horizon, and there having been engine tweaks and what not, it might be easier for modders or you yourself to put him in later, and with multiplayer allowing for mods, I think we might see a lot more modders joining the community.

At any rate, it's been a wild ride, and i'd like to say thank you for putting as much work into it as you did.

Actually putting new class with new skeleton and animations may be more complex in TL2. From what I understand, Runic made a lots of animations for their male and female skeleton (idle two handed anim, idle fist anim, ... ). Also items and wardrobes will be linked differently.. no more creation of [CUSTOMCLASS][/CUSTOMCLASS] entries for every item - we'll get just [MALE] and [FEMALE]. It will be easier to create new classes, but with existing skeletons.. also it should be pretty easy to re-skin character. But maybe I'm wrong and it will be still pretty generic..

@Slybones:
are the animations done?
what needs to be done? wardrobes stuff? items? skills?

Cool mod !!
I like it very much, and want to do sth for the mod .
But as a beginner, I don't know whether I can do it well.... :?

What needs to be done? I think mesh and animations are the most important, and wardrobe isn't (forgive my poor English...)
If mesh and animations are OK ,maybe I can do sth like skills / affixes / cinematics .

How's it going guys, just wanted to give an update, I have been super swamped so couldn't get this mod finished for TL1, but things are starting to chill out and so I am going to do my best to get the mod into Torchlight 2, if the tools are avialable and support character imports when the game comes out. Hoping they do, would be fun to play the class in multiplayer.

Nice to see you're still around slybones :)
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall,
with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.

This all looks amazing, however I am a bit confused how this is going to balance out in Torchlight 2. I mean do you already know what the skill sets and stats of the other classes are and you worked around them to create this or did you just make this based on Torchlight 1 character stats. I'm asking this because you say that you wont be able to release this on time for TL1 and instead you will do it for TL2. But with the whole multiplayer thing and mmo aspect of TL2 how will this class fit and wont you have to once again do a lot of changes, thus having to slow down the release of the decimator when TL2 comes out ?

Heck yeah, I was sad it didn't happen in TL1. But I think Sly was swamped that work. Dang real life.
