Help with gems

Postby Kolobos » Mon Dec 20, 2010 4:04 am

My first post here, so hello to everyone :D

Few days ago i rediscovered my love for Torchlight and breezed through story dungeon in no time with my dual wielding Destroyer (playing on hard). Amazing game. Now i'm kicking some ass in the infinite dungeon with half of graven set and Epic Sword Of War God (gambling for second one).

The problem is my both stashes are completely filled with gems and now i seriously need to use or sell them. But i'm completely clueless how should i use them. Can someone please explain which gems would complement my DW Destroyer the best - the ones i should put into weapons and armor?

A scattering of high level elemental gems on armor to boost your resistances. See next line.

Skulls are always good. Consider putting one really buff one into your main weapon to enhance health steal, but definitely put all the others you have about your armor/bling, because they boost Def. Boosting Def increases both your armor damage absorbtion and each of your resistances by a percentage equal to your current Def value. Does not buff missle reflection, damage reflection, or Block, however.

The combination of the above two effects can have great impact on your overall elemental resistance.

Pure Embers or Core embers are both good candidates for the other slot on your main weapon. Or just consider putting the highest damage producer gem you have into the second weapon slot. Pure Embers are the big physical damage producers. Core Embers in weapons give you

Never put Chaos Gems, Fish Scales, or sea creature Teeth into weapon slots. Their effects, even the damage effects like +3 Critical Strike Chance, are not contingent on what type of slot they are in, and the very few weapons slots that you have are precious for gems whose enhancements are Item type specific.

Don't worry too much about enhancing your stats other than Def. Your main stat is almost certainly getting plenty of increase from your regular promotions, and the two other stats are generally much less important to playing a particular character type.

Socketing a Mana Steal gem (?eyeball?) could be more important than Health Steal for a ranged character, because you are probably burning through mana-from-range more quickly than health. On the other hand, a couple of layers of Adv. Spellcasting could take care of that as well.

Thank you for your input, really appreciate it. I've put Pure embers into my swords, and Skulls into armor. The amount of pwnage my destroyer unleashes is absolutely disgusting, and i love it :).

While you are at it, do you have any tips for amulets and rings, which one should i gamble/hunt for? It's kinda hard browsing for the best ones in Torchlight armory, because the only filter is required level.

Most jewelry except Uniques is randomly generated, and Unique jewelry drops/shows up only VERY rarely. Therefore, I've never tried to keep notes or a running knowledge of the fixed enchantments on Unique jewelry that you may only see once in a blue moon. I think it is probably not worth while to try to track down particular trinket items through the Gambler, unless you are specifically building a Set. Even then, it's...well, forgive me, but it's a crapshoot.

On jewelry, I suggest that you optimize your choices among the stuff that you run across to just one or 2 favored types of enchantment, and consider everything else that comes with or that you enchant on as a bennie.

Personally, I favor +Experience Gain or +Gold Find as the desirable base enchantments on my trinkets. However, if you are mainly interested in the bling serving as combat enhancements, look for stuff with either the highest 3 or more Res types you can find, the highest +Def you can find, or both. I think you will come out better than looking out for a particular offensive attribute.

Currently i'm mainly using bling with +str and +def enchants. I've been using the same jewelery for a while now because there is rarely anything good for destroyer in terms of drops. Maybe i'll sink some gold in gambling after i get the full Graven set and enchant the crap out of it :).

Thanks again, you really helped me a lot.

I found a nice blue ring with 45 fire damage and some other mods on it and gave it a bunch of enchantments. The two sockets have +4 critical chance chaos gems in them. Something like that can be a huge help and boost your damage enormously.

EDIT: I reread your original post, said your stash was overflowing with gems... you're upgrading them, right? Also, you know there is a mod where you can add a gem vendor who has a wide (but pricey) selection?

Worst case scenario, make a mule character. Put stuff in shared stash, load up new character, take stuff out of shared stash and put it in his stash. If/when you need it again, put it back in the shared stash.

I've been collecting uniques and sets, and have like 8 mules so far.

Lol I had to breakdown and install a mod that gives me extra stashes because I easily have 4-5 stashes right now full of just gems, its sick honestly.

8 Mules!?!

I've been collecting every Set and discrete Unique costume type, standard and Epic, plus Rings, Rifles, Pistols, Shields, Random Uniques, and a special Mule (my original) who just keeps stuff to help new start-out character, and stuff that is often used (extra Ember Fish Eyes, etc). I have something like 40 mules.
