On my Windows XP/Steam install the path is C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsernameHere\Application Data\runic games\torchlight. Have no clue where it is in later versions of Windows. BTW, you must enable the view of hidden/system files in the file manager to see this.

The file you want to edit is named "Settings.txt". It's in the torchlight directory along with ogre.log which is also sometimes useful to be able to access.

Open settings.txt in Notepad or other text editor. Find the "Console = 0" entry and change it to "Console = 1" and save the file.

Boot Torchlight. When Steam says your local file are newer than the cloud files, you MUST choose to load your local files. If you miss this step, Steam will overwrite your settings.txt which will disable the console and you'll have to go through the whole process again.

Go to the Load Character screen, not the Continue screen, and load the problem character.

Once the game has loaded and you see your stuck character, press Shift and [~] which is the tilde key. A console window will open in the lower left corner. Type "ascend" and press [Enter]. Do not type numbers after the "ascend" command as bad things may happen ("cheater").

The level loading screen will run and when it finishes, your character should now be on the next higher level and standing on the "down stairs". Game on.

When I did this, my stash and all equipped items, etc, were intact. I wasn't playing HC so I cannot guarantee you will avoid the "Cheater" label/penalty if you use this method. I have "heard" that trying to ascend more than one floor (typing in a number after the "ascend" command) will trigger the "cheater" thing.

All I really know is the above method worked for me. YMMV. Back up your stuff before you try this if you're worried about losing anything.

Just a warning... I don't know if this happened to anyone else, but I followed the directions in the first post. They worked for me but everything in my stash is gone. the shared stash is fine, but it was on my main character so I had some stuff that was really hard for me to get (Sushi Helm, a few uniques I hadn't yet moved to the shared stash, and my Skulls/Ember Gems) all disappear. Really upset about the gems... Only been playing the game for about 13 hours and they were the culmination of me transmuting every single rare/magical I found into a gem and up'ing them... but I guess being able to play the character again is worth it. Just in case though... I'd recommend you move all your items that you can to your saved stash before ascending your character. My character was stuck in a map portal, don't know if it made any difference... Bummer, lesson learned I guess.

Got stuck in High Security mysterious map thingo.. Googled for help, came across this forum and WAS able to use the console command.

HOWEVER, in doing so I lost my entire stash.. Complete with many polished gems, and unique items that I'd passed down from a retired L45 character. Somewhat disgruntled, but not much that can be done I guess, is there?

I don't seem to have a settings.txt file. I checked the folder where the executables are in, but nada...
So I generated one with the lines I found in this thread, but still didn't help me to get to a console. Can anybody send their contents of settings.txt please, maybe there is a syntax issue?
Other advice also very welcome.

Not sure about your OS, but in Vista the settings.txt file is located in: [install drive]:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\.

Ahhh... I used local instead of roaming in the path. Thx enemantik. :)

Okay...

I'm running a Machintosh MacPro4,1 dual quad-core Intel machine, with OS 10.6.4.

I've had a similar experience to others: My character was doing one of the Hatch quests, I clicked on (an item or gold, I forget which) near where my character was standing, and he moved to the location to pick it up. Following that, he was stuck behind some terrain features. Reading the first post, I reset my Console to 1, and followed the instructions to bring it up when loading my character. I then typed ASCEND in the Console. Following that, my machine locked up completely. It was necessary to power cycle the machine.

After restarting, I reloaded the game, and my stuck character was successfully moved to town. However, as others have experienced, my Stash was eliminated. The Shared Stash appears fine, all items actually on the character are fine, all stored items are gone.

A rather depressing price to pay, but, I suppose it's better than not being able to use the character.
... and this, too, shall pass away ...

I have had the game for about 1.5 weeks now and only recently experienced getting "stuck" with no objects near my character, and only with my Vanquisher. In both of the cases this happened I simply exited the game and restarted, loaded character and was unstuck. Not sure what the original issue was from way back last year or those that continue until recently but I recommend you try this simple series of steps first before using the console since some seem to experience stash clearing issues with that method.

Steam version on Win 7 amd64

Just got myself stuck, Destroyer lvl 5, early, so it really didn't matter much, but it was annoying. before deleting the toon, I decided to see if I could bash my way out. Put 1 pt in Stampede, and a couple of blues later I was out of the fix. It seems to me that there must be a very specific path in, and out of, the barrier. Stampeding merely pushed me further down that path than I could see to do with my character.

Or something like that.

I got stuck (on level 33!) and used the console --> ASCEND gimmick to get out and it worked. However, like a number of other fine folks, I found my Stash empty upon returning to town. I was bummed, but determined to finish the game with his character. I went back to level 33, and when I got to the end, i decided to go Town Portal back to town to stock up on supplies. When I got there, my Stash had been restored! YES!

So, if you lose your Stash this way, don't give up! If it matters, I was playing the Steam version on my Mac. OK, back to the palace I go...

I got stuck today at level 26 and was going to use ASCEND command, but console was resetting to 0 each time I started the game.

To prevent this,
Right-Click on settings.txt -> Properties -> Set mark on read-Only -> Apply.
When you are done, remove the mark from read-only if you want the game change the file automaticly.

I somehow just got stuck in this area in High Security:
http://img687.imageshack.us/f/stucks.png/

I simply could not get between the stairway and the open trapdoor. Now, my pet had gotten stuck with me, so I sent my pet off to sell it's items. It could not get through the gap either, and was vainly trying. However, while it was doing that, I was somehow able to get through!
It meant my pet was completely stuck for the rest of the map and could not do anything, but I was nearly finished anyway so it didn't matter.

Just throwing this out there. I haven't checked the whole thread so someone might have reported this already.

Hello again,
It's me. I'm still stuck. Been so since May. Been feeling like Torchlight again, and am redoubling my efforts to fix things. So, let's recap, shall we?
Hey All,
Like a lot of you, I've just been through a Phase Portal, and like all of you, havoc was wreaked and I cleared the place out. I stepped into the return portal, grinning at a genocide (in this case versus Mimics) well-waged, and...the game crashed...

I rebooted, and my beloved character appeared at the exit portal--except now the map arrow had changed to become a down arrow rather than the usual up. The game thinks this is the door in rather than the door out. Of course, this being a Phase Portal, Town Portal Spells/Scrolls don't work. I can run around as much as I like, I haven't gotten wedged in a rock or teleported to some strange ledge, but I'm still left without an exit.

Oh, and the usual basic support questions answered: Bought it online (Not Steam). Currently using a MacBook running the most recent version of Leopard (Not Snow Leopard, just it's regular non-snowy cousin).

Finally, while I'm more computer literate than a room full of grandmas, when it comes to the more advanced stuff my specialties tend to be more...selective. Please feel free--indeed, I encourage you--to spell things out in the most minute detail, as if I was a complete and utter idiot. I won't be offended, and the worst-case scenario is that I'll know what you're talking about.

Many thanks!

That was then. I've since read everything posted since then, and I'm glad to hear that a bunch of people have gotten this sorted.

However, I seem to have a different problem than anyone else:

I do know where my Library file is. Application Support? All set.

I don't have a Runic Games folder.

I've already made sure all my hidden files are visible (I'm also fixing the Done Loading error in Minecraft now. I just cannot catch a break!), so I assume it isn't hiding or anything. I'm not using Steam, so I assume it should be there. And yet...

I recognize that this is more a Mac question than a Torchlight question. Here's looking forward to being able to reach the console part of the equation here.

This is a great game and I've enjoyed it immensely up until now. I had over 35 hours of playing time (on Steam) into the game with great stats, weapons etc. and have progressed to about level 31 in the Black Palace. I took a map quest and was doing great. There was a big battle and when all the monsters were killed my character was trapped behind a small pile of rocks with spider web on it. :o I couldn't get him out. I don’t know how he got back there! :? It seems that on one end he should be able to move out but he’ll only move around in about a 2 square foot area! I tried to cast a town portal to get out but it can’t be cast where he is. I quit and restarted the game, even rebooted my system but when I went back into the game I was still stuck in that same damned place! :x I tried for an hour to get him out and back into the game with no luck!

Happy to report that your "ASCEND" fix worked like a charm! :D It put me back in town with all my inventory etc. intact. I bought another map scroll and it took me back to the same map I had been stuck in with all the monsters I had killed still dead. I found the place where I had been trapped and just passed it by and finished the level. I'm back on my quest after that BAD scare LOL! Thanks a Million for the fix! :)

I downloaded that file and it crashes my game

I start TL, the music begins to play, but it sounds like random noise. Then the game crashes. It never gets to the character loading screen.
I get the standard windows error message "This program has stopped working..."

Is your save a mac version or a pc version ?
Do you have any mods installed ?

I can load other chars fine.
I don't have a sig

The save is for a LVL.1 Vanquisher that doesn't appear to be having any issues other than a lack of suitable attire for a cold and filthy mine.
