Fledgling Studios

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to take the time to make a little post about this up and coming indie dev studio. They are currently in the process of making an ARPG and I know that they would love more feedback and support. If you're like me then you love the ARPG genre and are always looking for something that has the potential to fill that gap in your gaming needs. I have to say that this is one game that I will be keeping a close eye on and giving feedback whenever I can. The devs are super cool guys and they are always willing to give you feedback on your ideas or suggestions. They answer questions promptly and are fun to just chat with as well. It reminds me a lot of how Runic is. I remember the early days when there wasn't even any offical forums, yet they would take the time to answer my emails and that's a quality in devs that you don't always see. So, in short, give these guys a look and see what you think.

Edit:http://fledgstudios.com/forum/index.php these are their official forums.

This should help answer some questions about what they are working on.

I will update this thread with links to any new concept art that surfaces. I may even try to get a link to the concept artist's deviant art page.

From what I can gather, it's just a bunch of random people from the internet trying to put a game together? If so, that's pretty cool.

LOL why would I need to site the source material if all I'm doing is linking to the thread on their forums where the game devs have posted the art?

It has been some time since I have updated this thread and I should have done this a lot sooner. There are several really cool updates on the Fledgling Studios FB page ( http://www.facebook.com/fledglingstudios ). I would especially be interested in what you all think of the UI layout that they recently posted.

Postby Hunter331 » Mon May 14, 2012 10:15 pm

Just found this thread. I am the lead designer of Flesh Asunder, and started Fledgling Studios. We ARE a bunch of random people from all over, but over time, we've slowly been weeding out those that will flake out on us and have been building a strong core development team.

First, I'd like to say that I am very excited about Torchlight 2 and am proud to be a member of the beta. I've enjoyed this genre of games since I played the original Diablo as a young lad. Torchlight 2, from what I have seen, is a very well-made ARPG.

Second, allow me to tell you a little about myself. I am 25 years old. I live with my wife, our puppy, and a friend. I hold a bachelor's degree in Game and Simulation Programming, for what little that is worth. Basically, I have been playing games since I was five years old. The first game I ever modded was Duke Nukem 3D. I own about 300 PC games. I work full time at my aunt's restaurant. I like to shoot guns and read in my spare time. If you'd like to know anything else, feel free to ask.

We've come a long way since our days over at freeforums. We now have a new location for our forums, along with a Facebook page, and a MODDB page. Here are the links...

http://fledgstudios.com/forum/index.php
http://www.facebook.com/fledglingstudios
http://www.moddb.com/games/flesh-asunder

Flesh Asunder is essentially Diablo meets Hellgate: London (in America). Despite its glaring issues, Hellgate: London had some good ideas. It took place in a more modern setting than many of us were used to, and included guns as part of the gameplay/loot hunt. These are elements we want to include as well. We want to create a game that provides an engaging story (but one that can be ignored if so chosen), balanced versions of classic ARPG mechanics (skill trees, stat points, etc.), and perhaps most importantly, tons of loot for the player to find.

Now, all of this sounds great (I hope) in theory, but what work have we actually completed? Well, check out one of all of the links to see some of our visual progress. Beyond that, we have completed a good chunk of our back end programming, including the following features:
*Random loot drops, which are based upon item level, monster level, item classes assigned to the monster, and drop chance for the assigned item classes.
*Experience gain/leveling up.
*Primary stats, such as health, mana, critical hit chance, critical hit damage, and more.
*Passive boosts to stats upon level up.
*Stat points, which, as of last week, may be spent in several areas to boost a variety of stats.

We are indie developers in the truest sense of the word. For now, Flesh Asunder is being developed on an extremely small budget. Every member of the team is an unpaid volunteer. We are working hard to put a demo together. Any support the community can provide would be appreciated. I personally read everything that is posted on our pages, both good and bad (unless they be trollin'). The game players are the ones that matter in this business. Without the players, there would be no reason to make games. They are our priority, and we believe they should be the priority of every developer. Beyond that, we are all game players ourselves. And since I am creeping up on my 20th year of gaming, I know exactly what I want to go into Flesh Asunder. Its just taking me some time to gather the resources to make it a reality.

Hope to see some of you on the pages or over at the forums. If nothing else, I'd love to generate some discussion about our planned gameplay mechanics. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have. We are being extremely forward with our development ideas.
-Tony

P.S: Killious is perhaps our most dedicated fan. He's getting beta access for sure.
An individual should strive to understand how and why something is implemented into a game, instead of merely complaining because the game isn't exactly the way they want it to be.

I'm a PC user, and I happily pay for new content.

Hello everyone,

I would like to ask a favor in supporting these guys. If you have a Facebook would you be so kind as to 'like' their page. I know that it would really be encouraging to them to get more likes so that they can potentially spread the word about their game. I must admit that I was enticed to make this update by the potential to chat with the lead designer and any other members of the team that can be available via Skype as a reward for reaching 250 likes. They are less than 20 likes away from this goal. They will then choose a community member to chat with. They said that the method of choosing has not been chosen yet. I do not plan on bumping myself or saying "Hey, I got 'this many' likes." If you are interested in talking with some truly passionate people who are trying to break into the game development biz then I would highly recommend giving the page a like. I am sure that they will include all community members in their method of choosing who will be granted the Skype chat. If you aren't really interested in the chat, it is still worth a like for the fact that they are all working out of pure passion for the industry. Not a single member of their team is being paid for the work they are doing on the game.

I have that vibe from the game as well. I honestly think that this is going to be an amazing game. However, its going to be vastly different as well. The art style to the skill system will be distinctly unique to the game and they are really good about hearing community ideas and interacting with us. Very cool group of people.

So... I took a look at their website and facebook pages, and I'm getting that "we're a group of guys who've barely done anything but want support and have nothing to show for it yet" feeling from it. If it were a bit further along, I'd hype it from the RGF facebook page and twitter... but I am not impressed enough to do so yet. Once they have more to show for their efforts a bump to this thread would be a good reminder :/
