Windows 8 - Who is going to try it?

Postby Rusty » Wed Feb 08, 2012 2:33 pm

So Windows 8 will be out in a few days for those bold who would like to try it. Who is going to try it?

I don't think I will, but that is because I want to have a ready system when TL2 ships. That and I don't want to clog up my system as well.

No thanks, I like being able to customize my background. That, and if I want to use it like my computer is a smart phone, I'll use my smart phone or tablet...

see no reason to "upgrade"

work is still running xp on some pretty old pcs ; excel 2007 and access 2007 crawl at work, but I doubt they'll upgrade the pcs or to windows 8 anytime soon
I don't have a sig

"It brings together the potential of a tablet with the power of a PC."

Personally I found windows 7 bad enough. I also do not approve of the app store.

People have been able to find work arounds to have the desktop as default and basically Get rid of the MetroUI, but if Microsoft doesn't have easily accessible options to do that. No thank you. It's a nice feature if you have a touch screen monitor or kinect for windows, but to force it you might as well not be in the desktop OS market anymore.

Basically they better not force MetroUI on me. I'm happy if I can complete hide it and just use the more optimized windows 7 mode.

Actually, the way I understand it, Metro can be disabled or shut off.

Anyway, not a chance of my buying into Win 8, XP and Win 7 do everything I need to do on the computer.

In one way or another I will do it. There is so much new introduced with coding that I will have to take a look on :) I have not had power to do it yet, but would enjoy taking a look on coding metro apps etc.

Background: Long ago used Windows XP: It was ok. Upgraded to a new computer 4 years ago, put on Windows Vista with no more or less trouble than I get from any other windows system. Switched to Windows 7 last year and love it, and have no plans to change my OS on this desktop for years to come.

...however, I really want a decent tablet computer that isn't running Android or Mac OS. I want something that can say... run real programs on it. I have heard there are Windows 7 tablets out there, but I'm not sure they are what I'm looking for. If Windows 8 is backwards compatible and is really as fast to load and run as I've heard, I'll get a Windows 8 tablet some day.

...but my desktop computer is sticking to Windows 7 for a while yet.

I upgraded from XP to 7 about a year ago, no chance I'm changing OS anytime soon, especially when microsoft does these terrible things to the interface.

Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,

I was a die hard XP user and never made the transition to Vista. I did switch to Win 7 and I have to say that its probably the best option on the market right now. IF by some crazy alignment of the stars I were to switch to Win 8 it wouldn't be until at least the SP1 is released.

I love W7.

When I upgrade my computer (rebuild), I'll add a few new SSDs/HDDs, and probably install W8 on one.

You can add skins to xp, there are programs for searching for drivers. Also everyone restores quicklaunch and sets it back to how xp was anyways, right?

So seems like even 7 wasnt really needed.

I agree with hawkn and Zidders. Windows 7 is a leap forward from XP. Don't get me wrong I loved XP, but I just love the functionality of 7 better.

Yeah, it took me a little bit to get used to W7 from XP, but now I love it, and hate working with any other OS.

Still running XP myself, just could not get the same performance out of 7 and I doubt 8 will be any better. Until I either need more ram, or xp becomes widely unsupported changing my operating system is a side grade at best. Even them I'll probably just build a new pc and set aside my current one to a storage/guest pc.
