@Doom - I was actually thinking that 40 unique items was pretty generous. Pretty much every major boss and half of the chests dropped one. If you think about it... you will have two unique items every time you fill up your bags... or 20 unique items per act. That is much more than I got in the first two acts of Diablo 2. What would your top and low end be? I would say anywhere from 10-40 in the same time frame would be ideal.

-something that raises an eyebrow is too many uniques from regular chests, as much as half of the boss drops. special chests makes sense because they are tied to events and other bosses, gut regulars i don't know.

Adam opened about 20 times as many chests as he killed bosses. Even though he got about half as much as a boss drop, that means that only about one out of 40 normal chests gives a unique item. That seems pretty fair considering uniques can't drop from barrels, corpses, rocks, etc. I think uniques in general could be ratcheted down a bit, but I am overall pleased with the current drop rate. I think it will be a ton of fun.

I also think D3 is going the wrong way with their (any monster drops anything) philosophy. I think people enjoy being hunters more than gatherers... stalking lions more than grazing wildebeest. This loot system gives the players more control.

It's more than likely he's trying to avoid finding more of what they fed him in China. I watch that Andrew Zimmern fellows show, I've seen the kinds of things that pass for food over there in some places x.x

A great job Jerich (as usual) !

Could I have your permission to traduct it in french for my website ?

In fact, I've just finish to do an article about those statistics : I really appreciate this "circles" presentation from Runic but I think some players should like to saw the same thing with tables and percentages.

So, I hope that loot drops in percentages should be another source of information, even if I translate it in french. ;)

I was happy to finish my news for this weekend but with your post, this is one more thing to do because your analysis is much more relevant. :)

Nice write-up, Jerich. While the basic information is all contained within the infographic itself, different people have different and varied learning styles (whether visual, auditory, text-based, tactile, etc.) that are most effective for them, and a particular person usually favors one over the other, so a text-based breakdown will assist many in absorbing the data more efficiently. Having a '10,000 foot perspective' a la the above never hurts, either.

Combining several learning styles into one cohesive format is the most effective method of knowledge transfer, as programs like Rosetta Stone have shown. Your students must love you in 'real life', too!

Well, That Looks Familiar! :D

Just as an aside, I noticed a transposition of two numbers in the first line of your second table. That should read '5742', not '5472', which of course changes all the other percentages in your table also (see my link, above). Probably want to correct that for your readers.

Lol, around 40 uniques by act 3 is a little crazy I think, but we also have to keep in mind that

-Not all of them are super-powerful weapons
-There are repeats
-There are probably tiers of uniques (normal unique Killing Axe and epic unique Killing Axe with higher stats and requirements)
-You won't always get uniques for your class/playstyle

So it looks like you won't be swimming in uniques since you'll probably be selling/trading a lot of them.

Also
-I think it'd be neat if the boss monster was using the unique weapon/armor pieces it drops :)
-I don't think 16 unique drops from 16 bosses means there are that many bosses, some bosses may drop more than one unique

No worries, mon ami.

Cool site, by the way. I like that jQ theme you're using. Nice, clean, simple lines.

Looks good. 8-)

I lost my precedent message and I loooove that :(

So, as agreed, I do an update to my "loot drops article" with Jerich's analysis (source is at the start of the article). Thanks for your permission because this article is my "best-seller" for commentaries since I start. :)

I do everything I can to translate it in right way, some of fans already said that my translations are pretty good so don't worry about it. ;)

JQ theme is a good free wordpress theme with useful jquery functions. However I add some customization and plugins to fit my expectations : happy to see that most of you appreciate it.

Hopefully Sets will be a tad bit harder to get than in TL1. I could always buy the complete Vanquisher's Court Finery Set in town.

You must be very lucky, I found like 3 set pieces of different sets during 2 playthroughs. If anything I'd hope for higher drops for sets (but not from vendor, maybe from gambling) and more sets

Wait... this makes me wonder: Why do white quality items even drop at all? They're not really worth selling, fill up inventory space for no reason... you won't really ever want to pick those up except maybe in like the first minute of the game. 1000+ "normal" items, well... greens I can understand but why whites?

I get even less why the Diablo games have grey quality items? They're literally deliberately made to be strictly worse, what's the point of that? Accidentally picking them up and having to drop them again is frustrating and pointless.

Assuming the pet still gets to town and back pretty fast, I'd say whites are sorta like bonus gold, that aside they were also cheaper to enchant in TL1 so at least if you couldn't find a magic or rare that was an upgrade you could always pick up or buy a white item and enchant it. It could be cool if they had like more gem slots or better enchantments, or were part of some kind of crafting recipes in TL2 but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Sounds like gems and spells are a lot more precious this time around. I don't have a problem with that since gems aren't focused on grinding anymore, but it just makes me hope that we don't run into situations like in TL1 where you come across a lectern/armor rack/etc, click it, and NOTHING comes out. Those are just really disappointing and make me feel like it would have been better if I hadn't come across those in the first place instead.

Because nobody likes an empty pinata.

Tbh for me floors littered with crappy white gear is worse than nothing, as it's a chore to gather them and sell, but without it gold income is much smaller, also I like to run with my pet not send him to town every 2 minutes. It could just drop gold. D3 had a good idea (in-place sell/disenchant) but they changed it :(.

MIght be a good idea for mod, "midas" spell that sells all items around player for like 20s and sucks all the gold, vaccum cleaner for dungeons :D

It definitely is a chore but I find it to be worthwhile, on that vein of logic why even require gold or any items to drop at all, picking them up and finding them is a chore :P As Syl said, it makes those epic items much more epic because you have something really terrible to compare them too. Nothing says you *have* to pick up every single white piece either and in fact, I only pick up gear I can use and stuff like potions (unless I'm strapped for gold) and ignore everything else. Not to mention the lowest tier of items will *always* be trash items regardless of the level of it, so if you remove whites the next tier up would become equally useless to you and be nothing but vendor loot.
