Show damage/not show damage option

Postby Ulvaak » Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:29 pm

Hi Runic, just a quick request, feel free to ignore but hopefully it’s simple enough for you to give some consideration to even at this late stage of development.

You know how numbers and words float up when you hit something, telling you if how much damage you did and whatever damage effect has just happened (e.g. Crit or Chill, or 2400!, etc)? Can we have an option to switch that off? Just a check box in the options menu would be cool.

I’m not that much bothered by the numbers and words but would just prefer it if I could switch them off...

Eh mind if I ask why you want to turn them off? Perhaps the numbers but the whole "block" and "glance" stuff seems to be pretty important to me O_O

I am pretty sure that TL1 had this feature. Don't quote me though. So it's safe to assume that 2 will as well.

Just pure personal preference really. No other real reason. I figured I’d just keep clicking on the monster until it falls over anyway or would take action when my own health is threaten so whether I know one of my shots were blocked or if I was only graze by one of theirs hits doesn’t seem that important to me.

There’s enough happening on the screen anyway so I’m probably not paying that much attention anyhow. But that’s just the way I like to play, other people would have other preferences, I suggested a check box in options because I know there are others that like to see the numbers and letters.

It's not a deal breaker or anything serious...

Nice. I'll also disable showing all numbers, they clutter the screen in big groups.

Why would you ever turn them off? They are so life like! Ever get a paper cut and notice the little red "1" that floats out? And depending on how bad it is you also might get the "bleeding-damage" icon over your head.

Oh and critical hits are just an extension of crits in real life. Watch in Basketball for Critical Dunks.

adoom, I don't know what kind of crazy made-up world you live in but in mine paper cuts do way more damage than that. Having the debuff icon is really embarrassing in public though.

Pain != damage. It would take a lot of paper cutting to kill you. Perhaps what you are referring to is the paper's ability to wussify, enrage, and inflict tearing up over an iddy biddy line on successful attack.

Yes, I've seen many an ally fall prey to paper cuts' status afflictions.

Right now I'm fighting off the "inflict frustration" my job is casting.

Just wondering...how about the voiceover guy "you have sprung a trap", "your pet is fleeing" etc... is there a way to turn him off?

Or can it just be some other sound or graphic cue that let you know what is happening instead of someone announcing it? a creaking chest, a flashing pet icon etc?

I think he got improved, now he would say "you have sprung a trap" 30 min later, when you are visiting town (joking ofc.)
In TL2 "trap" voice was so late that It didn't do anything useful "You have sprung a trap" "I know i already looted that chest with trap".

Altho for me "you pet is fleeing" was pretty useful as i wasn't always looking what he was doing.

traps didn't even have significant lasting effects in TL1. I never felt like it was bad to trip them. I just shrugged and moved on.

It's actually a useful thing to have. Though, I prefer to see numbers, it's nice to make them more discrete, which is why I have the smaller floating text mod in TL1 installed.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall,
with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.

Will numbers be colored according to dmg type ? I saw that in borderlands and it was easy to see if mob was resistant to something even without looking at nameplates

If we have to have the voiceover guy can we at least make him sound cooler? Is the narrator from bastion available? How about a female voice over? Or a more cartoony sort of voice? Or different accents depending on the class you’ve picked? (I’ve always imagine the engineer to have a posh English accent)

And maybe the voiceover can be funny? I’m not sure how you make an announcement about your pet being severely injured or gone to town funny, but maybe even something with a bit more flavour?

Posh English, no.

:) Anything would be an improvement on what it currently is I think. I think Polish would be fun :)

Personally I would still prefer it if those annoucements were changed to other less intrusive audio and graphic cues, but if we have to have the voice, then lets at lease make it interesting....
