Dude, it's friggin LEGOS!

Postby hawkn » Thu Mar 22, 2012 1:09 am

So, I was shown this earlier today by Zidders, and holy crap. I'm going to my local Lego store tomorrow. I can't wait to get my rulebook in the mail. I love Legos, I love mechs/gundam, and I love table top war games. I can't wait to dig through my many tubs of bricks to build these things.

Sorry, I'm done geeking out.

You've been out of touch with LEGO for too long, people are constantly making these minibots

But yeah, I 'm wondering what their game will be so look forward to your report. It may be simple to get into if they're designing it so kids aren't intimidated by it.

My 6 year old daughter loves legos...so naturally I get to play with them again as an adult :P

I still get excited going to the lego store, even if technically I'm buying something for my daughter heh.

That looks like an incredibly brilliant combination that I was previously unaware of.

I'm sitting in front of my computer, cash in hand, waiting to leave to the Lego store. I don't know if I should grow up, or accept and enjoy it.

Also, Pick-A-Brick is friggin expensive.

Legos in gneneral are expensive for being just plastic. The profit margins have got to be like 90% on legos. Shipping probably costs more than manufacturing (casting)...

Yeah, I ended up blowing a lot of money on the online store since their in-store selection sucks. $0.20 a piece adds up fast.

Agreed AttackGorilla. Creating the molds and buying the injection machines are the expensive parts of the process. Once you've recovered the cost on both, outside of maintenance, it's almost pure profit.

I don't know if I should grow up, or accept and enjoy it.

Accept and enjoy it. I've never understood why people think that Legos should only be for kids. In fact I know of some Master's Degrees and R&D projects in robotics that use Legos.

I don't see the difference between playing with lego's and painting a picture. Legos are the paint, reality the canvas. You can use them constructively and for play...well heck, play is constructive, too. It encourages you to dream, imagine. Many of the greatest things in this world came about because someone decided to let their mind play around with concepts and ideas.

Thinking strategically doesn't just apply to war, after all. Isn't life itself a series of strategies? We dream about our future and strategize the best way to get to where we want to go. Sometimes you need to react to sudden changes, sometimes you need to make a new plan. I grew up with legos, lincoln logs and erector sets. Kids today learn to code. What's the difference between building blocks of code and making a game on a computer and building blocks of plastic and making a game out of that? Different medium, same basic idea.

All work and no play makes this a dull life.

I'm with you guys.

I'm almost 50, and Lego's are fun to play with. I even managed to build the Black Pearl  and those mech's look like they would be fun to build.

They are a lot harder to build than they look. Or maybe I'm trying to make mine look too "gundam". I need to figure out how to make them easier to pose.

I think it will be easier when I actually have the parts I need.

You have dedicated Legos stores

I was such a Lego nerd when I was a kid, even though my collection was pretty limited. (FU local stores)

Those are pretty elaborately made (even though I'm not fond of mechs holding guns prefer them integrated), I think I've missed a lot on the scene, didn't know you had so much freedom. Do you purchase single parts and put them together or buy packs and use bits and pieces from each one?

That's actually some nice work Hawkn. I'd pull my legos out but they're at least ten years old which means that after looking at some pictures I'm pretty certain I'm lacking the unique pieces they've released since I stopped collecting. Maybe I will anyway. I used to do some similar stuff back in the day but my robots were necessarily much larger, usually 4-6 inches tall.

I made Sci-Fi planetary bases with compartments like reactor, laboratory, defense perimeter, walls, and vehicle stations (had plenty of really really cool vehicles that were technic hybrids). Man, that was a lot of fun now that I think of it.

EDIT: DAMN YOU GUYS! *heads off to the basement to find that huge Lego box*

Well currently I'm just using parts from random sets I've collected over the years. I honestly haven't really touched Legos in like 5-6 years.

That said, I ordered a ton of individual pieces that work together well color scheme wise so I can make a cell of mecha. Third party sites are a lot cheaper than directly from Lego.

I went and contributed to the kickstarter fund. I chose the option for the glossy rule book. I'm looking forward to them bringing up their operation far enough to start selling pre-packaged part kits.

I went down into the dungeon and dug out the old Lego collection this morning. Sometimes it's good having a pack rat-ish family. Unfortunately this is the challenge I face:

The Lego box of doom. The picture doesn't really show it but there's a ton of crud in there such as loose change, random broken action figures, old AA batteries, pieces of board game and just some straight weird stuff. My brother was in charge of the Lego collection for the longest time and he wasn't the most fastidious steward. So I pull out a couple of handfuls at a time, sift through to find the parts that I need or ones I think I can make something cool out of. This is the sifted box and the jar of usable parts after a couple of hours this morning:

I have about 90% of the parts I need but the other 10% are critical ones for making important joints that I don't have enough of. I'm also not sure what kind of consistent color scheme I'll end up with. Probably black with some blue or red highlights but I've also got quite a bit of white. It's really just a big mish mash. I plan on placing an order for whatever else I need soon. Thankfully I won't need much so I can keep the cost down.

Yeah it's really expensive for them to sell prepackaged kits. I'd recommend using Bricklink, it's pretty cheap. My "collection" is about as much of a mess as yours lol. That's why I just ordered all the parts I'd need for 5-6 color consistent mecha, and I'll work mostly from those. The stuff I have now I'll be able to scavenge a good number of parts from, but I'm pretty strict about matching colors, and using the right parts.

They seem to have quadrupled their initial funding request. Should be a successful project.
