Modding spiders out of the game?

Postby Darkvalnar » Thu Mar 22, 2012 1:08 pm

Sup.
First of all, i gotta say, english isn't my native language.
So if you find any spelling mistakes or anything, just ignore them.
Right, lets get started.
I play games like Diablo since i'm a little kid and i always loved them, so i picked up Torchlight the other day at a local store.
It was really cool to begin with, but then i encountered something that always bothered me. Spiders.
Now let me make a disclaimer here, i played the shit out of Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 even though these games had spiders they never bothered me THAT much.
I think at this point its really just about the graphics and animations, i mean i can deal with the little ones, but dude, these damn huge tarantula widow things, hell naw. (Just think about Dark Messiah of Might and Magic  )
Point is, i just cant play the game with those spiders in it.
Games like Dragon Age 1, Dragon Age 2, Skyrim or Fate got some mods that allow to remove the spiders out of the game or atleast change their models.
So all im asking for is a mod that either removes or changes the models of the spiders in the game. (I would rather go with the first option tho :D )
I hope a modder finds his way to my thread :D

I was going to tell you how to do it, but then figured it would be just as easy to make it myself. :)

Another Arachnophobic modding thread, this one for kingdoms of alamur. The OP cannot play the game due to spiders. Modding those out will be harder than in TL.

On sheer scariness KoA spiders win. Personally i like spiders but the KoA spiders come with a jump and a hiss that make me think the would be terrifying.

I thought i would post this just so Darkvalnar knows hes not the only one. :D

I played KoA.
It was good, i mean, i passed the first 8 or so spiders but then it was just horrible.
I didnt find a mod for KoA so i basically just deleted the game and played more Diablo :D

My mate loves Torchlight but is deathly afraid of spiders, so you're not alone, OP.

Sixshot...I love you. You're a great guy, AND yet another reason why the modders in this community rock.

Now I just need an antispider mod for Torchlight II XD

I was about to present a possible way to do this, but looks like Sixshot beat me to it. haha, darnit.

Anyways, I have a strange love/hate relationship with spiders. In real life I absolutely can not stand them. However, in video games, I think they make the coolest beasties ever! :D I'm glad my arachnidaphobia isn't that crippling. ;]

Question: What exactly does this mod do? Does it remove the spiders, replace the spiders with something else? I just got Torchlight for my girlfriend and she's arachnophobic. While removing them outright is fine... I just worry about her XP falling behind when she's playing.

It apparently replaces them with different mobs.

Yeah it basically replaces them with other mobs. The spiders are removed from the spawn-classes so they can no longer be chosen when the game calls for a random monster, and in effect all other monsters have an increased chance to spawn. Whenever the game calls for a spider specifically you should get a skeleton (or many) instead. So you should end up about even on XP gain.

So, I just saw this topic, and I want to chime in a little bit on it.
SixShot's method as he describes it works, for the most part, but there will still be spiders when they are spawned by the map, such as through the grates in Crypt areas. Luckily they are Recluses and not Tunnel Spiders, but still. Also I can (un)comfortably say that when they spawn from the ceiling it's much worse, but off the top of my head I only recall that happening in that one challenge room.

Torchlight II has the same stuff, but with an added problem. Again the smaller spiders aren't as bad, but the ones that use the Blackfang Arachnos's model are "not cool", as I have been assured the kids say nowadays. There are various parts where spiders are spawned by the map and not just randomly strewn about by the overarching spawnclasses, and the smaller ones are worse when they come down from the ceiling.
The added problem is that there's at least one area that has only spiders in it, and a boss that's also a spider. So if one were to make a similar mod in Torchlight II, one will probably have to replace them rather than excise them from the spawnclasses.

Actually another problem is that there are mods that add spiders to the game - who on Earth would do such a thing - and those are unaffected, especially if the added spiders are new enemy types, but obviously there's not a whole lot you can do about that except making separate interpretations without spiders of them.

TWO CENTS!

Arysisa:
Locate your Mods folder, it's typically under [username]/AppData/Roaming/runic games/torchlight/mods/ - The location can differ depending on your OD, check here for where to look: http://www.runicgamesfansite.com/showwi ... sland:1857
Put the "no_spiders" folder from the .rar file in that folder.
Mind you that the AppData folder is hidden by default, so you may have to set it to show hidden folders.
