I'm just not completely sure why people find it so necessary. I actually find navigation by mouse click to be much, much easier than WASD.
I guess we just differ in what we find easy or comfortable. If I am playing any kind of ranged class, then being able to walk left, while aiming at things that are on the far right, makes my gaming experience much more fun and enjoyable.
I truly dislike, but will suffer through for the sake of an otherwise good game, having to click every place I want to move to and then play tennis with the mouse cursor to kill things. Ground, enemy, ground, enemy, ground, enemy..
Instead, if I can keep the mouse cursor fixed on enemies or loot, the interaction with the game becomes less frantic. This is good, because for me that heightens immersion. The UI should get out of the way, or let me customize it as much as possible, so I don't notice it is there. That lets me focus on the game content.
Not everyone will feel like that. Some people prefer having to use only the mouse, even if it means they will be doing a lot more clicking. They enjoy all that clicking. Me, not so much. Basically, I'm wondering why we cannot have it both ways. Let those who enjoy using mouse only, use the mouse only. And let those of us who would like to move with the keyboard do that. It's not that much more technically complicated, if anything it requires less calculation.
