If you have a Steam version, than you just use your Steam account.

Hey there, here is some clarification on accounts.

You will get a key for Torchlight II regardless of where you purchase. Pre-orders will get their keys when the game comes out.

  • Steam keys are only used to set up your Runic Account for internet multiplayer.
  • Runic and Perfect World keys are used to activate your game installation and to set up your Runic Account for internet multiplayer.
  • Please note that you cannot use a non-Steam Torchlight II key to activate Torchlight II on Steam.
When you want to play internet multiplayer, you will be required to login with your Runic Account. If your account is not set up, you will be presented with the option of setting one up and linking your key to it. Once your key and your account are linked, you can login and play internet multiplayer.

A Runic Account is NOT REQUIRED for single player or LAN, only for internet multiplayer.

Internet multiplayer has some additional features that are tied to your account - such as friends lists and the ability to block players.

ok, thanks for the clarification!

when you mean LAN play, does that also include direct connection play? like, i was only planning on playing with 1 friend and we usually host a local game (over the internet) and dont use any servers. or, will we be required to log into online and make a game there?

And before some hyperactive over reactive person comes online and poops a brick about paying for extras, signing up for Runic Account is FREE with ZERO STRINGS(signing up for some kind of non-Runic service, etc.) attached.

Currently, there are just the two options - LAN play if you only want to broadcast your game on your local network, or Internet play if you want to connect to people outside your local network. We don't have an option to directly enter an IP address (which would also mean the person hosting would need to forward ports on their router), but there will be access controls (passwords, or friends-only games) on internet games that will let you make non-public games.

For my own edification, will there be any segregation of Steam and non-Steam MP players? Or will I, with my Steam copy, have the option of joining a game hosted by someone who bought from PW or directly from Runic?
If disgruntled Diablo 3 players come to Torchlight expecting a Diablo game, they're likely to be equally disappointed. If they come to Torchlight just looking for a good game, they may find themselves a home.

Hmmm..kinda disappointed you folks don't have that option, Justinian, as I play over Hamachi quite a bit :/
Really wish you folks would reconsider that, I think it's going to turn a lot of people off who have been looking forward to LAN over VPN. I don't think people should 'have' to use a Runic account just to play online with friends. I can see why you might be doing it the way you're doing it...it doesn't mean I like it, tho.
@Deadnoob I don't think it's going to segregate. Pretty sure if you're playing via your Runic account, it will connect to anyone else playing via their Runic account.

Everyone will be playing together with their Runic Account.

If you set up your VPN connection (such as Hamachi) to port forward appropriately you would see your friends LAN game listed in the LAN lobby.

Widdershins is a hard direction to find if you aren't already on the back of a giant turtle.

Is the key a one time use only? Meaning, if we lose/forget/can't access for whatever reason our Runic account, does that also mean that internet multiplayer for us is rendered off limits, despite having bought the game regularly? In such a case, who would we turn to for support for a new key or some kind of recovery?
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall,
with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.
