Torchlight 2 Character Customization

Postby Graximander » Wed May 02, 2012 9:18 pm

From what I've seen of Torchlight 2, the customization is very limited. Only three options, "head", "hair", and "hair color". Is there any possibility for more options? Body type, skin color, eye color, eyebrows, lips, ears, mouth, nose, accessories, etc. Yes, a lot of those options are in the "head" category. However, if they take that category apart into some of the options I listed it can give a lot more options for customization.

From Totalbiscuit's third part in his Torchlight 2 Gamescom coverage, Max says, "We need to have more distinction between two Railmen in the same game or two Outlanders..." Three options doesn't prove to me much of a difference. There is a lot less combinations that can be made for multiplayer, and players may end up with the same face at times or hair style. By splitting the "head' category into separate choices it'll add many more combinations increasing the chance of players being different.

Would Runic consider this, or am I posting this for no reason?

Everything but Body Type is pretty feasible. Different Body types might = having to rework every armor model in the game to fit the new body types.

I put the "DOOM" in "Sexy."

This post by JamusT might give you some insight on how and why they chose to handle the customization options in the game:
viewtopic.php?f=30&t=22619&p=205589&hilit=skin+tone#p205589

That raises another question, however, if its not final does that mean that skin tone may move to its own separate slider depending on if you have time?

I don't make these decisions and of course nothing is final but i'm going to say super highly unlikely. We tried to give a few variants per skin tone but the faces are painted the on the skins. So as of right now to make it so you could match skin tones we would have to repaint each face for each new skin tone... Which would be a fair amount of work. More likely we would prefer make new skin and face variants instead to give more variety as opposed to color shifting art. Plus one of the things we tried to do was actually paint our new skins with more ethnic diversity than many games offer, in that I think we were pretty successful and not overly stereotypical or generic like many games now days.it's by no means perfect, but we want to give people more choices they can identify with, and compared to tl1 I think people will be happy with the new options.

I'll answer this with another question. How often are you looking at your characters face?

Your characters are recognizable by the broad strokes, not the minute details. So if you want more customization you're better off with more hairstyles etc. You can already change the skin tone, but I believe it's just an extension of the 'head' option. They can't really cut the face into pieces without compromising the art style, which means every combination would need it's own skin. That's a lot of effort for such a minor difference.

Thanks for the information, and I understand why they do this now. I was mostly curious if there was a chance to add more customization since I love making my character in RPG's. Although, I'll still pre-purchase off Steam for everything else Torchlight offers.
