password keeps getting rejected

I've got a key from gamespy on twitter and followed the procedure here: http://uk.pc.gamespy.com/pc/torchlight- ... 609p1.html
I entered it in the launcher and it confirmed activation. However once I try to log in inside the game, it won't recognise the password from my account.
Resetting didn't help out and linking the key to the account I made on runic didn't help either as it says it's used already. Did I just lost the key while the game still recognises it as fine or >.>?

Same problem happened to me. I checked my Runic password, and it's not the one I made. I can't change it back, either.

What is going on here?

Account manager is up and running. If you're unable to register keys that you've received through promos (via twitter, for example), it's likely that someone else has already taken them. And if you can't login to your account, try resetting your password. If that isn't working, are you guys able to see the login CAPTCHA?

Edit: I wouldn't be surprised if all the keys on that GameSpy page have already been used up. They're going like hotcakes! I do know that RGF is giving away 500 keys over the weekend, so you could try there.

Edit 2: if you're trying to login through the game and you encounter any type of login failure, it's going to say wrong password. If you're getting that error and you know your password was correct, chances are you haven't linked your key correctly through the account manager. Your best starting point is to check there. Let us know if it's still an issue.

I think it went wrong on the end that the key was available at that moment but I didn't use register it at the account and used the launcher. That means someone else probably got the key in-between and I just got a lucky pass as it wasn't used yet. So how do I clear my already-used key from the game ? Reinstalling didn't help.

I've used a key from twitter which was a matter of seconds, not the ones on the site..those were old.

My pw too is getting rejected, I installed the game, and when I went to play, it asked for key, I put in key and it said it was valid, since i have been trying to play, it keeps saying wrong password, I have seen no captcka, A little frustrated, and now you are saying I may have to get another key when I already put one in and it told me it was valid? I have tried changing my pw and its still not working, it just says wrong pw.

What I did was enter the key I got from Gamespy's twitter into the TL2 launcher, it then said the key was registered successfully. I just checked my runic games account info and it's showing I have no product keys registered. I guess I was suppose to enter the key in the runic account website first not the TL2 launcher?

It does not matter what order you enter the key, but you DO need to link it to your account AND enter it when you first start the game.

The key gets linked to YOU when you link it to your Runic Account. As with any of these key giveaways, you need to make sure you do that first to ensure the key is yours.

That is exactly why.

The key is not linked to you because it was not linked to your Runicnet account. The key serves two purposes:

1: link to your account to grant your account access to play online.
2: unlocks the game client to allow it to run.

Only the first of those two binds that key to YOU (your username/password). That is why it is important to link your key first, because until you do that, it is not really "your" key.

So in what way can I remove the key so the launcher is blank again and I can use a new key if register one properly later on?

Or did that old key just unlock the launcher and doesn't it need to be the same as from the account

I just want to reiterate this to the folks who are getting keys through giveaways online: putting a key into the game installer does not get you beta access. When you receive a key, you must first register it -- before someone else does -- to your Runic Account at https://secure.runicgames.com/. Then, and only then, will you have beta access.

Darn I accidentally activated key on launcher too and now can't link it to my account. But I don't understand something. If I activate game client with my key and same time someone activates his web account with same key, does this mean that someone who just activated his online account can't unlock game client because I just did it myself. So no key to anyone. If it works that way it's pretty bad on public giveaways when hundreds of people waiting for couple keys because it's impossible to activate game client and online account same time fastest so it goes to 2 different ppl.

Nope, the key will unlock the client still. The key has a limited number of activations since it is the beta, but the important part is to link the key to your Runic account first, as Gamespy called out on their giveaway page instructions.

Ok that helps a little, got bad luck then that I could not activate client with any older beta keys I tried, always got wrong key error. Then I got the one after 2 sec it published and it worked fine. But can't link it to online account anymore as told. Well it happens. Have to start look another key for online account then.

Hoping to get some idea as to what I should do. The key I got from gamespy, I have active under my account page and it's listed there. But it will not work in the launcher as it says "No Activations Remaining".

I'm in the same boat, managed to snag a key through runic's fanpage and activated it in game, turned around to activate it on the website and got "That product key is not valid or has already been registered." So here I lie with the beta, but no online access...shame the single player isn't up...
