A dumb question

So I'm new to this game, playing it cuz of the freebie deal for preordering torchlight 2 on steam. I installed a few mods, but I think I might be bugged.

Now and then when I attack or cast a spell with my alc (cant figure out exactly what makes it happen) I get a big electrical explosion with aoe streamers that seem to pretty much wipe out the enemies no matter what. I thought this might be from a mod, which would be weird since I was actually careful to try and only install mods that wouldnt make the game too easy (texture packs, one custom class, and some extra merchants, a UI reskin.) But just to be safe I tried deleting them all and clearing the mod cache, but it's still happening.

So my question is: Is this normal? I'm using a staff as weapon, if that matters. If it's because of a mod install, I will reinstall the game, but if it's normal and it's just some kind of special "super attack" effect, please tell me quickly.. I really don't want to "cheat" my way through my first play.

Keep in mind I have about as much experience as you, here, but I'm playing vanilla so it is very normal.

Near as I can figure it is that the Alchemist has a hidden gauge that goes up as your normal attacks connect. When this gauge maxes out, you get a couple attacks like you described.

That's my two cents, but someone with more than two days of experience could define it better.

It is an undocumented part of the critical hit mechanic. It can happen with any class of character, though I think only on upper end results of Crit Hits.
