Steam preorder and non-Steam versions

Postby Ape » Wed May 16, 2012 4:35 am

Hello.

If I preorder TL2 from Steam, will I also get the non-Steam versions when the game is released? I'd really like to play the game without having to run Steam all the time.

Unless I've missed something you will not automatically get the non steam versions upon launch. You have the option of purchasing a second copy from a non-steam source or using steam's offline mode, but I'm unaware of a promotion that gives you a second copy of the PC game for free because of a steam pre-purchase.
If disgruntled Diablo 3 players come to Torchlight expecting a Diablo game, they're likely to be equally disappointed. If they come to Torchlight just looking for a good game, they may find themselves a home.

If you purchase the game from Steam, you will ONLY be able to start it up from steam if you want to do it in offline mode that's okay too!

How about the other way around?

Will it be possible to buy Torchlight II in a DRM-free version and a redeemable Steam key in a bundle or package from the Runic Games website?
Almost Human offered their game Legend of Grimrock in such a bundle on their website, which I liked an awful lot (that's both the game and their way of offering it). You benefit from the advantages of Steam (like Steam cloud, achievements) without having to cope with its problems (like unreliable offline mode), should they arise.

I'd happily pay 50% more for Torchlight II, just to have the choice between running it on Steam and DRM-free.
Any chance we will be given the option to get such a DRM-free/Steam-redeemable package?

I would preorder the game right now if there was an option to get the game DRM free and with full official support.

There was something weird with the TL1 options:
Although we cannot advocate specific vendors, please get your sources from either Gamersgate.com or Steam. The installation files from "torchlightgames.com and perfectworld.com will install, but they will not run.
- Wine AppDB

Perfect World had some issues and I just wouldn't want to use Steam.

Also, can I be sure that all the distributed versions are compatible with each other and receive always the same patches?

Here's how I think that it will work;
If you buy the game from Steam, you get a cd-key to add to your Runic Games Account, you activate the key on it and you may download a standalone client that you would get from say, PerfectWorld. If they do it that way, then there would be no need for Steam to be running.

I sure hope they will do it that way. I can't see any downsides with that either. You would still get just one online account, of course.

And as a bonus, they should give you a Steam key even if you don't buy the game from Steam. I know games that are doing this, so it's definitely possible.

I'm pretty sure the devs have already stated steam purchased copies will be limited to steam, whereas those purchased directly from Runic or from perfect world will be steam free.

No interchanging I think between platforms I think.

As I don't want a Steam-copy I'm going to wait and buy the game when it's released. :)

I know I could get it from Perfect World, but ah well, I'd rather wait and check all the upcoming alternatives.

I have several games that run thru Steam due to lack of a choice. And that's irritating.

I'm waiting for direct buy from Runic but that almost seems pointless since the steam virus is already on my PC.

Some people love Steam and I can never figure out why when there are several similar etailers that don't use the draconian DRM (usually just a one-time unlock). I just don't like Steam running full time when I'm playing a game I paid for. Ie, don't like being treated like a criminal. Offline isn't always the best option. I want offline, period.

Yeah I don't like Steam either.

Luckily they're going to be offering alternatives so that's awesome. :D
