The Announcer... Ugh!

Postby rlbg16 » Sun May 20, 2012 1:04 pm

"Your pet is fleeing"
"You have received a quest"
"You have triggered a trap"
"You have become more skillful"
"Fortune smiles upon you"
"You have become more famous"

I have to say... I hate that Announcer guy. It freaks me out sometimes. I always imagine that someone is always watching my character and me play, it feels weird. It also makes me feel disconnected from my character. I like it when my character say things like "I set off a trap" or "My mana/health is low" and the voices vary depending on what class and gender you chose because it somehow feels like my character is really alive and I'm guiding her/him throughout the game. The other reason I hate the announcer guy is that it makes the game really game-y, it feels like an arcade game rather than an Action Role-Playing Game.

I think that my character is the one who should be saying stuff like: "My pet is fleeing!", "I received a quest, or "I have become more skillfull/stronger".
So it won't feel crowded. There should only be YOU(player), your Character & Pet and no "Other Guy".

It's not major and I know Runic will have to pay for additional voice actings.
It's just weird sometimes. Again, nothing major :)

I don't mind the announcer too much, I would like to see an option to disable specific lines (if at all possible) tough. I don't mind the announcer say something when I level up/get a fame increase, but the fact that he points it out when you spring a trap has annoyed me very much in TL1 as well. Yes, I think the exploding barrel was enough notification that I sprung a trap thank you very much :p.

I would like a option(s) to turn off the announcer and my character. I hate hearing the same message over and over again every couple seconds. Don't really want to hear what they say anyways ...what they say is pretty obvious without it being said.

What if they added a variation on what he said, or a couple of additional reads?

I agree. Changing it from "your" to "my" would make it more immersive, I think.

not trying to compare gw to this game, but when gw1 first came out ...my fav combo of games was d2 lod and gw ....they sort of complimented each other as opposed to competing ...

i see torchlight 2 as a wonderful compliment to the gw2 adventure I am so happily a part of!!

all you former blizzard guys are gaming geniuses imo - so if you are not working together, at least i have a nice suite of great games to alternate with. :D

I am so glad I am not the only one who hears this. I actually say it out loud every single time I level up.

Not to me, I had several occasions where I hit the button and the charater told me she couldn't do it. Saved me some hassle really.

This boils down to preference. The announcer is sometimes useful, ie. when your pet returns. Though, more often than not, it's just plain annoying (ie. "You have sprung a trap", thanks for stating the obvious!).

Maybe have it as an option. Maybe even allow the player to choose which announcements to play. But I think overall they are not necessary at all. If the game was one big narrative, it would make sense to have the voice explain situations. But as it is, sound effects and little pop up messages should be enough. Sprung a trap? Play a disctinct sound effect that the player will quickly learn and become familiar with. Pet returns from town? Show a little update message on screen with $info for 5 seconds and have it fade off (The current pet returning summary pulls you out of the gaming experience also, taking your eyes off combat and having to click a button just so you can get this big ugly box out of your way).

Simplify Runic. Don't make it like D2, but don't try to 'fix' what wasn't broken in it either!

The player wants to experience and play the game, not be clicking close buttons on dialogs and being told the obvious. If we were dumb we'd be playing D3.. oh wait.. I didn't mean that!

It would really make the game more immersive if your character is the one talking.

Also, it would also be better in fishing when you failed, instead of a text pop up that says "Caught Nothing", your character will instantly say "Nothing". It's nice that the pop up text is faster now than TL1, but you still have to wait for the text to come out so you can cancel it eventhough you already knew you failed.

I would like to see the option to toggle off ALL the voices, individually (as in, separate options for different voices. "announcer"/NPCs/player character, etc). Especially the "announcer" guy. It IS very annoying. I do not like someone narrating everything I do. I do not really like the NPC or player character voices, either. I don't mind my guy grunting, but I don't like the "I set off a trap", etc. The voice-acting in this game is very mediocre, which is distracting.

yes.. these messages should be dubbed by male/female character voice.. not that old corrupted alchemist
but even then there should be like 5-10 seconds timer when it is allowed to play the message again

Same here, he's saying it a bit too fast >_< Think he did in TL1 too though, got some vague memory of it. Come to think of it, I think they're directly from that game :p

I like the voice actor from TL1 better. This guy just sounds like an everyday announcer whereas the previous had more character and his statements sat in the mix better.

Actually, I think the "Announcer" guy in TL1 is the same guy at TL2

Bah it'll be an easy mod, replacing with TL1 audio / removing lines you don't want. +1 on stopping the "your pet is fleeing" spam again :D
