It's called 'being a responsible consumer'. Seriously, do you just buy stuff without even researching it? Because that's not being very smart. I don't just buy a game unless i'm reasonably familiar with it. I watch lets plays, or read up on developer websites and web forums. I never get a game the day it comes out (Torchlight II being the only pre-order i've ever bought). Really. You wouldn't buy a car without doing your research into how safe it was, what kind of mileage it gets, what kind of warranty it comes with (I would hope you would, at least). Why should buying a game be any different?
I look into developers before I decide whether or not to support them and I make sure to get as much info about a game, who makes it and their publisher as I can. It's really common sense.
@Giga While I honestly probably enjoy Diablo III's story a bit more (this isn't saying Torchlights story is horrid, it's just even Runic admitted that they're not trying to compete with bliz in the story/voice acting/etc dept) I'm starting to really get into torchlights. I just see Torchlight as being something i'd continue to play. I don't see me replaying Diablo. Combat is too damn slow.
